Ever wondered- What is a collection? How does a designer imagine a dress? How does Nicolas Ghesquire dream up a silhouette? Now you can find out.

This year, from September the 21st until October 18th, Louis Vuitton have opened up the brains of Nicolas Ghesquière, Artistic Director for womenswear, and let the public take a look inside: an exhibition showing his autumn/winter 2015/16 collection from start to finish at 180, The Strand, WC2

This follows on from series 1 showcased in Shanghai and Tokyo and Series 2 in  LA, Beijing, Seoul and Rome, and now the third series is coming to London, purposely coinciding with London Fashion Week SS16.

The exhibition is a maze of the mind, and takes lucky guests through every step of the design process, from initial inspiration and design, right through the actual runway shows – no wonder it took thirteen rooms to display it all.

This style of showcase aims to prove that the collection is so much more than a simple process, but it is a stream of consciousness, dreams and self-reflective journeys within the designer. Ghesquière used his memories of the past combined with his visions for new silhouettes and shapes to create a new moment of excellence through the union of these two states of mind and time. This exhibition is a real adventure!

Louis Vuitton AW15

Guests can see right into the inner depths of the fashion world, even being able to experience a glimpse of the atelier where the magic is made.

Not only that, but there is a whole Gallery dedicated to Accessories. Nicolas Ghesquière’s favourite thing, “I’ve always loved designing accessories. For me, accessories are never stand alone, there has to be a common thread between them. They’re an integral part of each outfit, either clashing or complementing it. They share the same sentiment and movement as the garment. A silhouette is a complete make-up of all these elements.”

The exhibition finishes off with a discussion of the new AW 15/16 campaign by Juergen Teller and Burce Weber, the study approaches every aspect of the Louis Vuitton woman: actresses, iconic models, new faces, different cultures and ages.

All of these moments of thought and creation are expressed through one voice to discover how the Autumn-Winter 2015/2016 came to be, and each room is a piece of the puzzle.

“Series 3” expands on the visual exploration that Nicolas Ghesquiere has started. The third campaign, however, uses not one photographic mastermind, but two. With names like Juergen Teller (who has photographed everyone from O.J Simpson to Kanye West) and Bruce Weber (known for his seductive 90s Calvin Klein campaigns) it’s impossible not to fall in love with the latest Vuitton ads. Focusing on the diverse range of women that Ghesquiere has chosen to define Vuitton, the campaign features both well-known and fresh faces.

Teller took Alicia Vikander, Jennifer Connelly, Liya Kebede, Fernanda Ly and Angel Rutledge to a location near Barcelona to shoot them in an unnamed sculptor’s utopian home. The surroundings are sparse and colourless, complimenting the AW15 collection that brings it to life in a flurry of metallic co-ords, cami dresses and the classic LV monogram bag. The location is a reflection of Ghesquiere’s passion with modernist architecture.

Meanwhile Weber shot Freja Beha, Rianne Van Rompaey and Julia Merkelbach in a juxtaposing location – an old airfield. It could be an old movie clip from first glance with it’s cast of famous names. The models run across the airfield, longing for a far away adventure and wanderlust.

The collection is everything we would expect from the mega-brand. Statement shoulders and leather trousers make an appearance, fur coats are better and bigger than ever and we even spotted a Clueless inspired mini-skirt suit set. We’ll take two, please.

Alicia Vikander will be the new muse of Louis Vuitton, at just 26 she has already worked with some of the biggest filmmakers and actors and is set to feature in eight movies in 2015, which obviously makes her a fitting Vuitton girl.

From the minute she appeared on-screen in Larry Clark’s Kids in 95, Chloë Sevigny has been a style siren. Today she’s idolised for her talent as an actress and her enviable wardrobe. Every look is one for the scrapbook but now, instead of collecting magazine clippings to Pritt-Stick in your diary, Sevigny’s finest fashion moments are charted in one eponymously-titled volume. Featuring work of Juergen Teller and Terry Richardson alongside treasured personal stills, the book includes a foreword from Sonic Youth frontwoman, X-Girl clothing founder and Sevigny’s close friend, Kim Gordon.

Teddy Bear Furs

Opening the show in the Fondation Louis Vuitton with some killer oversized cream and black teddy bear fur outerwear that’s engulfed its wearer, lavish decadence – with some elevated daywear staples – was on the agenda for Nicolas Ghesquiere’s AW15 Louis Vuitton collection. Think boxy tailored suits worn with LV logo t-shirts, technicolor metallic jacquard dresses and jackets, glittering silver chainmail type knitwear, thick wool-loop coats, supple red leather trousers and a series of leopard print in mustard and red mohair (encrusted with crystals) and thick fur.

Box Bag Beauty

Models walked through each dome of the Fondation Louis Vuitton carrying an array of oversized metal box bags. Smaller than a trunk but far bigger than your average day bag, they came in bronze with brass hardware and black initials, Veuve Cliquot yellow (with enough room to stow a bottle), black leather with LV monogramming and mirrored silver with black leather detail.

Silk Seduction

Whilst white silk came with lace in the shape of form fitting tops with oversized shoulders that nodded to the 80s, black silk looked half bedroom, half vamp – a desirable look no doubt. Meanwhile a cornflower blue silk dress came with sleeves, worn tight and fitted. Aside from silk seduction, we went weak at the knees for the slashed knitwear. Rib knit in orange and washed-out navy, each jumper was slashed at the chest – skin peeping through – then complete with bell sleeves.

The new season is upon us and we’re knee-deep in imaginary shopping lists. Here, we chart our top SS15 campaigns.

CÉLINE

CEL_Master Presse DP SUM15 304dpi - 33The internet imploded when Céline released their latest campaign featuring American author Joan Didion, cementing her crown as the Queen of Cool. Also appearing in the campaign are British model, Freya Lawrence and Marie-Agnès Gillot, French ballet dancer and choreographer. Previous faces of the brand have included Daria Werbowy, Binx Walton and Natalie Westling. With the title of Céline Girl comes the universally accepted fact you are effortlessly cool.

LOUIS VUITTON

LV S2Following ‘Series 1′, the winner of the best campaign at the British Fashion Awards, Louis Vuitton have brought back Leibovitz, Teller and Weber for round 2. ‘Series 2′ echoes its predecessor for SS15; and the idea is to provoke an international but cohesive view of fashion, through locations and each photographer’s own eye.

GIVENCHY

Julia Roberts for Givenchy

The original Pretty Woman is now the Givenchy Woman, the embodiment of elegance in the boxy jacket, the woman’s lace shirt and the woman’s tuxedo dress, Julia Roberts is the face of Givenchy SS15.

LANVIN

Lanvin SS15

Recreating the brand’s logo of Jeanne Lanvin holding her daughter’s hand in silhouette, the SS15 campaign is a family affair featuring models and their daughters, including: Kristen Owen and Billie Rose Owen, Pat Cleveland and Anna Cleveland and Violetta Sanchez and Luz Godin.

SONIA RYKIEL

Sonia Rykiel SS15

Following suit with a family theme, Sonia Rykiel cast Elizabeth and Georgia May Jagger as the faces of their SS15 line and their mother, Jerry Hall, walked for Sonia Rykiel. Juergen Teller shot the sisters whipping their hair and adorned in coloured furs on the streets of Paris.

MIU MIU

Miu Miu SS15

Shot by Steven Meisel, Miu Miu’s SS15 campaign allows you into a secret world, half obscured by the edges of doors. A beautiful setting for even more beautiful clothes, the antique look of the surroundings makes you feel like you’re home, absorbing you into the storyline which interlinks a playful Mia Goth, a knowing Imogen Poots and Marine Vacth entirely lost in thought.

SAINT LAURENT

Joni Mitchell Saint Laurent

Joni Mitchell was the original folk singer-songwriter, sweetly singing about ‘California’ back in the 1970s. So naturally she’s a perfect fit for Saint Laurent’s SS15 collection, donning a fedora and intricately embroidered tunic, shot by Hedi Slimane, of course.
