Prada Resort 2016 Advertising Campaign_01

Post-modesty and luxury are the topics investigated in Prada Resort 2016 campaign, with high impact pieces and soft silhouettes, this year the collection saw a wealth of contrasts and dichotomies. Busy prints and fabrics are clashed together, with sequins and stripes, bunny rabbit tops and even a bold eye print thrown in for good measure. Prada have never been one to shy away from making a statement, but this year’s resort collection shows the fashion house at it’s boldest yet.

Shot by Steven Meisel, the legendary photographer manages to capture a series of informal portraits that perfectly encapsulate the tone of the very clothes in the photos. Angular and awkward (in the best possible way), the models in the campaign suit the heavily layered clothes perfectly, and the harsh background of metal gives the images yet another level of transgression. Multi-coloured bags in printed or perforated leathers and bold, oversized earrings are all part of the story. Decorativism, through the serial repetition of symbols recalls the concept of post-pop art. Simplicity becomes uniqueness.

As if Miu Miu’s AW15 campaign wasn’t enough to send us into a fashion frenzy, now the mega-brand have released a “Subjective Reality” video, also shot by Steven Meisel. Providing an unexpected, candid snapshot of the gritty streets of New York city, the film stars four fast-rising actresses – Mia Goth, Maddison Brown, Hailey Gates and – former Wonderland cover girl – Stacy Martin.

Whilst the campaign plays on ignoring the traditional variations in photography – the compositional and the improvisational, the studio and the street, the hand-held and the tripod –with Meisel framing his subjects with the streets of New York, their existing framework, their energy and their charm instead; the film focuses on highly-subjective exploration. Meanwhile the actresses are depicted as urban passersby.

The rebellious and improvisational spirit of the images, matches the attitude of the collection. Clashing colours, tonnes of texture and a mash-up of materials play out as a series of pinafore tops, glossy pinafores, cotton shirting, oversized outerwear and bold accessories – complete with a slick of rouge lipstick and a black eyeliner flick. Could this be one of our favourite Miu Miu campaigns to date?

Following a string of actresses possessing both talent and beauty, Stephen Meisel shoots Mia Goth, Imogen Poots and Marine Vact for Miu Miu SS15.

Miu Miu Spring Summer 2015 Adv. Campaign_02

Fearless, beautiful and truly talented – Miu Miu employ cinematic storytelling to relay the narratives of three actresses in their latest campaign shot by none other than Steven Meisel.

With Mia Goth, Imogen Poots and Marine Vacth as the leading ladies, we see a multi-room story fueled by sultry silks, Pepto-Bismal pink furs and luxurious textured pillar box red leather. Whilst Goth is perched on crisp white bed sheets sporting come hither eyes, Poots sits strong radiating rebellion amidst seeping rays of sunlight and Vacth sits serene, bag at feet, as if waiting an appointment.

Each captivating moment is framed with antique notes and dark wood furnishings, a contrast to the glitter clad specs, bold block colour leather, bowed mules, stacked platforms and slashed ruffle blouses seen in the collection. These are the faces of the future – strong, independent and effortlessly beautiful – quintessential Miu Miu.Miu Miu Spring Summer 2015 Adv. As the great photographer’s exhibition hits London, we take a look at seven of our most loved Meisel images.

He’s one of the only famous fashion photographers without a book dedicated to his work. He’s an intensely private man, giving only a handful of interviews throughout his lifetime. Supermodels owe their careers to him; Vogue Italia can thank him for the past 25 years of covers – most importantly, the controversial ones. He’s shot every Prada campaign since 2004 and was the mastermind behind that YSL Opium ad and let’s not forget the recent latex-filled Pirelli calendar.

Steven Meisel has been changing the face of fashion since the 80s. His pictures do more than just show off expensive clothes. They tell a story, often focusing on political and social topics that most other photographers tend to shy away from. Racism, terrorism and domestic violence have all played a part in his work, causing a flurry of media storms worldwide. Meisel’s photography makes you think. And we mean really think.

Of course, it’s about time Steven Meisel had an exhibition spanning his entire career. Cue: Role Play. Coming to the London HQ of auction house Phillips on December 16, it will feature 25 photographs handpicked by the man himself. With so many thought-provoking images to choose from, picking our top seven was a tough job. Here’s the ones that sum up his dynamic style along with his gift of transforming famous faces.

Grunge (Vogue, December 1992)

grunge

Steven Meisel is credited with introducing grunge to the mainstream. This timeless Vogue image could have been taken yesterday let alone in 1992. But the androgyny was too much for Anna Wintour who refused to publish the photo series. Luckily, the then Editorial Director of Condé Nast, Alexander Liberman, called it the most important fashion story of the decade and Anna’s decision was reversed.

Supermodels (Vogue Italia, 1989)

vogueitalia

It’s safe to say there’s a special relationship between Stephen and the supers. Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Kristen McMenamy, Karen Elson… He elevated each and every one of their careers. Here, Naomi and Christy are showcased in a behind-the-scenes yet still utterly glamorous shot of them checking their teeth for lipstick stains.

Gender (W, 2004)

asexual revolution series

Steven’s played around with gender for a long time. His Asexual Revolution series was the first time he’d worked for W. Posing male models in female roles, gender-bending at its best. He tapped into the cultural zeitgeist – as always – giving the people of America a view they’d only ever seen in small independent magazines.

Covers (Vogue Italia, 2011)

stella

The man has produced some of the most stimulating covers out there. This one, featuring Stella Tennant, was all about the discipline of fashion. Stella’s waist was corseted so much it became almost non-existent. A radical demonstration of the pain some go through in the name of fashion.

Satire (W, 2011)

tantrum ad

Ironic and iconic: that pretty much sums up the series of fake adverts Meisel photographed for W. Fabulous Fakes was a humorous take on everything from hair products to fragrance promotions. Karen Elson starred in the kinkiest one, of course. Turning the traditional lingerie shoot on its head, nude spanked men were submissively bent over with fiery Elson as the dominant figure.

Controversy (Vogue Italia, 2011)

kristen steven meisel

From creating a black-only issue of Vogue Italia tackling racism to photographing terrified, corpse-like women for the domestic violence cause, Steven Meisel loves to stir up controversy. But he always does it for a reason. This gruesome shot of a choking Kristen McMenamy raised awareness of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Debate soon ensued over whether fashion should discuss these kinds of issues. Meisel’s answer was and still is an undeniable yes and we couldn’t agree more.

Madonna (Sex, 1992)

madonna

Another of Meisel’s favourite photographs – and perhaps the most iconic of all – is this naked shot of Madonna for her book, Sex. Madonna possesses a sultry confidence captured brilliantly. The pair have been friends for years; the trust between them obvious here. In 2012, the photo sold for an astonishing $23,750 – a testament to Steven Meisel’s talent.

The latest campaign from Prada captures a subtle and intimate moment, a personal study of femininity and luxury. The campaign stars model of the moment Lexi Boling in the latest collection, clutching the Prada Double bag and new original styles. With relaxed postures reflecting the supple leather of the bags, the shots focus the gaze on the sensual combination of skin and leather. Resting on Lexi’s lap, the bags come in shades of white, caramel, sand, yellow and red, as an extension of herself, casually falling open to reveal a colourful contrasting lining of luxurious interior detail. The effect is a fleeting moment of intimacy and illusion, distilled forever in time and space.

Hitchcock heroines meet a sinister casting director in Prada‘s campaign film, shot by Steven Meisel.

“You’re overreacting.” “Will you keep your voice down?” “Do it again.” According to Prada, its new campaign film all takes place “under the glare of the spotlight and the watchful gaze of the casting director”.

Nine hopeful actresses – played by Amanda Murphy, Cameron Russell, Caroline De Maigret, Catherine McNeil, Fei Fei Sun, Freja Beha, Kristine Froseth, Malaika Firth and Sophia Ahrens – stalk in and out of the lens, reciting lines that sound more like foreboding preludes to the climax of a Hitchcock film.

Call it creepy, call it sinister – either way it’s the most dramatic campaign film we’ve seen this season. We just hope these models made the cut.

This is our story. Also, she tells us about that time Karl Lagerfeld said she’d never get laid.

Courtney Love Coachella crotch grabbing
The incident in question

Have you ever been to a frat house rager with Courtney Love? We have. And by frat house, we mean the massive Gene Autry pad at the Parker Palm Springs. But instead of bros and beer pong, there was an overflowing open bar and the creme de le creme of downtown New Yorkers, like nightlife icon Sophia Lamar and Saint Laurent muse Liza Thorn. Twas the second weekend of Coachella, and NJOY and Courtney Love hosted the intimate affair.

At one climatic point, she hopped up on a coffee table to enthusiastically ask the attendees to gather around as she thanked all for coming, tossed out NJOYs and ended with a “I hope I play Coachella next year!” in that raspy/immaculate voice (yes, please). Love then posed it up for pictures with guests, where she did the unexpected – aka grabbing several gay men’s crotches (including ours) for the sea of iPhone flashes to, in her words, “see if I can turn any of you straight!” Just let us know the time and the place and we’ll totally put a ring on it, Courtney.

We spoke to her about getting laid in Miu Miu and how Steven Meisel inspired her to get plastic surgery.

Any more deets on your clothing line? You tweeted a few photos of wearing the clothes complete with cigs and rose bouquets!

Someone at Conde Nast described it as “the perfect wardrobe for a courtesan slash rockstar”. You can’t buy it anywhere yet because I don’t have a licensing deal and because they’re so over the top. I’m making 12 new pieces for this capsule collection, so there’s pieces that everyone can wear – not just Sky Ferreira and Liza Thorn. The thing is, I’m now too old to wear them. I’m 48 years old. And I will tell you who told me that… Karl Lagerfeld. He said, “Why are you in a tutu, Courtney?” And I said, “Because I have a new record out and this is my Lady Gaga look!” And he said, “You’re never gonna get laid in a tutu.” And I looked at my navy Miu Miu, and realized he was right; I started wearing navy. Like that, I started getting laid.

So, you’ve done shoots with some of the greatest. Tell us a wild on-set story!

I remember doing a photoshoot with Steven Meisel, who said the most amazing thing: “I can tell if a model is lying about her age by the collagen in her calves.” We were looking at the tabloids and there were pictures of stars with this little wrinkle that all women and all men have under their arm.

So, the next time I went to my dermatologist, I’m like “Can you put collagen in that wrinkle?” [laughs] So he put collagen in but the wrinkle didn’t go away because… The wrinkle is a part of the human body. But I wanted to see if I could defeat the Meisel standard of beauty and excellence. Speaking of [Stevens in fashion], tomorrow I’m gonna go to the Steven Klein studio and we’re doing a very secret project, so I’m very excited about that.

What’s your relationship like with Klein? And can you let us in on the secret… just a bit?

I’ve never heard Steven gossip at all; I’ve never heard him say something negative about another person. I’m gonna do this online thing with him and we’re gonna make into a video for one of my new songs. Then for the ‘California’ video [for her new song], I really want [David] LaChapelle to do ‘California’, but even for me, he won’t get out of bed for less than a hundred grand…

Speaking of LaChapelle, you teamed up with him for an art show, Mentoring Courtney Love: David LaChapelle & Courtney Love

When I can’t write a song, I have to do something, so I have all of these paintings and drawings. At my show ‘And She’s Not Even Pretty’ [which took place in New York last spring], Schnabel came, my friends from MoMa came… I sold a lot but it wasn’t like Bob Dylan crazy, 120,000 grand crazy. But I put a lot into them.

Since we last spoke, your NJOY webisode came out and a lot of people have questioned you getting involved with an e-cigarette brand…

I believe in the product and I don’t align myself with anything that I don’t believe in. You know, I’ve suffered from it financially, but that’s my standards – I’m not letting them fall. I’d rather lay on my stained-ass couch that Mario fucking Testino photographed. I’m just not letting my standards down – it’s just not gonna happen in this life or the next.

After being very impressed with his dance moves in the A/W11 Lanvin campaign, Wonderland had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with Milo Spijkers from D1 Models.

How did you become a model?

I was at a party in Antwerp and someone from New Models came up to me and asked if I was interested in modelling. I had never really thought about it but thought I may as well give it a go. I went and saw everybody in the agency and was signed. It’s crazy because if I hadn’t been at that party at that moment, my life would be totally different. I got pretty lucky. I’ve now been modelling for a year and a half.

What were you doing before modelling?

Finishing high school. I was supposed to go to university to study history. I didn’t have any idea what I wanted to do after that. When my agency sent me to Paris, I got signed to Success. They asked me if I wanted to take a year off and try doing modelling full time and I decided to go for it.

What shows did you walk in last season?

Quiet a few. In New York I did Marc by Marc, which I was exclusive for in February and walked for again in September. I also walked for Lanvin and John Galliano. Galliano was a really energetic show and lots of fun. My first shows were definitely highlights. I did Costume National in Milan and Comme Des Garcons and Rick Owens in Paris.

Do you have a particular photographer you’d like to work with?

It was a great honour to shoot with Steven Meisel. I would love to shoot with him again. I would like to work with Terry Richardson, too – I’ve been optioned for things with him but unfortunately haven’t done anything get.

What type of music do you like?

It depends on the situation and mood I’m in. I like old hip-hop. Like old skool 90s NWA, Nas, Ice Cube and loads of others. My Dad also got me into music like The Doors, Frank Zappa and Janis Joplin.

What’s your favourite film?

The two movies I’ve watched twenty times or more are Pulp Fiction and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

What’s been your favourite fashion moment so far?

My first highlight was flying to New York to work exclusively for Marc Jacobs. I had never been to New York before. I couldn’t stay there long because I had a shoot the next day in London, but when I first got there it completely blew me away. My second highlight has to be shooting the Lanvin campaign.

We were playing a video game on Xbox – we weren’t given any formal dance moves to do! We were just playing the game and they filmed us, it got very competitive! When it came out I read a lot of the YouTube comments and a lot of people recognised the dance moves from the game.

What would you like to do in the future?

I’m doing shows in Paris and Milan in January. This year has definitely been the fastest of my life. I’m having all these great experiences – it’s flown by. I’m having so much fun, the more dancing the better!
