Luxury menswear meets industrial worker’s boot when Christopher Shannon and Cat Footwear collide

Christopher Shannon X Cat Footwear

Christopher Shannon founded his luxury menswear brand with a vision of continuing the legacy of fine British tailoring, whilst Cat Footwear started on the feet of the industrial workforce. And now the two have collaborated to make a boot that walks somewhere in between.

It turns out that both brands have something to offer the other. Cat has extensive material libraries and knowledge of what makes a shoe built to last, in fact, the soul of every Colorado boot is stamped with ‘Walking Machines’,  whilst the Central Saint Martins alumni, who founded his company in 2008, was earlier this year awarded the first ever BFC/GQ Designer Menswear Fund award.

The resultant collaboration – one boot that comes in two colour ways – features the Colorado’s T3 rubber outsole, a stacked midsole, and a tumbled leather upper.

Cat say that they are “thrilled to be working with a talent as exciting as Shannon’s”, and the young designer – who studied under the late Professor Louise Wilson – is equally as impressed with the footwear company. “We aim to work with companies who work to a really high standard and finish,” says Shannon.

This mutual respect between the two brands makes for a stomping collaboration, with style credentials to boot.

We catch up with the designer behind new London label McIndoe to talk style, brand direction and ethical production

McIndoe SS14

Salsa beats and caipirinhas welcomed Wonderland into the world of Maddy McIndoe: a print designer whose adventures in the Amazon last year inspired her to create her own fashion label. We caught up with the designer at the launch party for her ‘Jungle is Massive’ S/S 14 collection.

Tell us a bit about the inspiration behind this first collection?

I went to South America last year, and I didn’t really have much of a plan when I got there; I sort of ended up going through Argentina up to Bolivia, but then I decided to go into the jungle. After travelling through on a little boat and seeing all of the animals I came out thinking that I really wanted to do something, and looking through the millions of photos I’d taken I was like “I know, I’ll do some prints”! So I started doing them, without having much of an idea what they’d be for initially, as they’re hand drawn and quite childish…

You initially designed just menswear. Why was that?

I think my prints are quite playful. And there’s probably quite a lot of kidswear out there like that, but not so much adult stuff. So, yeah, I started doing just menswear, but then loads of my girlfriends were asking if I would do womenswear as well and so I started thinking that these prints could be more versatile.

So it was demand that prompted you to make the move into womenswear as well?

Yeah. And now I think the womenswear will be really popular, especially the matching co-ords and stuff.

You’re producing this collection in India, and yet the prints are inspired by animals from the Amazon. How important is diversity to you as a designer?

I initially went out to India for work, and obviously India’s had quite a lot of bad press for fashion production – Bangladesh especially – so it was important for me to visit the factories and know that I was sure they were good factories. I would have felt really uncomfortable outsourcing and not knowing where my clothes were coming from.

As a new designer, are ethics and the ethical production of fashion important to you?

Yes. In fact, that’s a huge part of the reason behind why I wanted to do my own thing and create my own label: because I can have morals like that, whereas if I was working for someone else I would have no control over that sort of thing.

So would you say that this first collection is a reflection of your own style? Or, if not, who did you have in mind when you started designing?

My label does feel quite self-indulgent in that I do love bright colours and lairy prints, so it’s definitely my sort of thing. But ultimately I’ve tried to make it wearable, so I’ve also done T-shirts with just a contrast print on or something, so people will like it that aren’t even necessarily into that more ‘wild’ sort of look. I knew when I started though that I didn’t want to make it crazy prices. I could never design clothes that my friends couldn’t afford to buy. Like, sometimes I see some beautiful, beautiful stuff, but I can’t afford to spend £400 on a pair of trousers, and I’d feel like a big fraud if I did that sort of thing.

What are the price points of this collection then?

The prices range from £28 to £35.

And you’re already stocked on ASOS Marketplace, but have you got anything else in the pipeline at the moment?

McIndoe’s also available from The Laden Showroom on Brick Lane. And looking forward I’d love to start a concession in a department store.

Have you got anything in mind yet for your next collection?

I definitely want to branch out, but continue to concentrate on print. So I’d like to do a collection with more varied prints. I’d also really love to do swimwear at some point. That would be so much fun! For both guys and gals: I’m happy that I’m designing for both now.

Why did you choose to design for guys first?

I’ve always been into menswear. I went to Manchester [university] and I did menswear for my final year project. I just love it, I don’t know why. I think when I started getting into menswear it was because there wasn’t that much menswear out there, but now, obviously, it’s a much bigger market. Particularly in London, people embrace that. I don’t want to water my designs down.

What about long term goals? What direction would you like your brand to go in?

I’d quite like to do kidswear actually. I feel like the thing that I love about fashion most is the print design. It’s all about the prints for me. So, yeah, maybe branch out in terms of kidswear or swimwear.

So should we be heralding you as the next Katie Eary or Mary Katrantzou then?

Laughs. We’ll see.

With LC:M mere days away, we catch up with Austrian brand Berthold to see what they have in store for us for SS15

Bethold AW14

It probably won’t have escaped your attention that this week is a big one for the (mostly) male population of our fair country. World Cup fever is officially taking over and this weekend also sees the start of London Collections: Men’s SS15 show season. Whilst we are used to looking to the future in the fashion industry, sometimes even a few days is an unbearable wait to feast one’s eyes on new gear. With that in mind, we caught up with the captain of the Berthold team to get an exclusive sneak preview of the brand’s upcoming SS15 collection. References to plastic, vintage rainwear and “aggressive stripes” are on the horizon, something we are rather intrigued about to say the least.

Bethold AW14

Where did you gain the inspiration for your upcoming SS15 collection?

I was looking at the Tokyo Impressions by photographer Michael Wolf – the images are beautiful and sad at the same time. They capture a moment in time when you want to be on your own, but cannot escape the city. My mood board naturally had a lot of references to plastic, either clear or molten, the texture of food wrapping and latex. As always I have been looking at the details of vintage rainwear and there are some photographs of insects too. Every season begins the same for me with a visual excursion through my books and the works of my favourite artists.

Your AW14 collection used pops of fuschia against a largely monochrome palette. What can we expect for SS15?

I have worked with the artist Tara Langford this season on some prints for this collection and I love the graphic tone of her work. There will be a black and white print of course and a “biro blue” print with some aggressive yellow stripes.

BERTHOLD MOOD SS15

How do you think your Austrian upbringing has influenced your design aesthetic?

I grew up in a ski resort in the Alps, surrounded by ski and hiking wear and so for me it is always function over style, and style over colour when I design. And sometimes I just do what I want.

How do you plan to evolve the Berthold brand in the future?

We have been steadily growing and have made additions to the collection like bags in cotton, neoprene and leather and this season we’ve worked on a beautiful scarf. It is printed silk and cashmere and produced with Begg & Co. who have been weaving cashmere, silk and lambs wool angora yarns in Ayr, Scotland since 1866. I enjoy these collaborations and there will be definitely many more!

MOOD SS15 4

What are the biggest challenges for your brand in an ever-growing menswear market?

The biggest challenge is to just stay focused and edit. To keep the quality high and enjoy the process. Then the customers will appreciate it as much as you do.

Which other shows are you looking forward to seeing this season?

I only ever look at the collections once they have been shown. I’m not that interested in who is showing, as I am more interested in what they are showing. It’s more surprising that way. ‎

Other than LC:M, what else do you have planned for the year?

We will be at “Capsule” in Paris and also for the first time at “Seek” in Berlin, and we will have a big SS15 Launch Party during LC:M. Also we have been re-designing our website with Assembly and I’m excited to show people. I just hope that people enjoy what we do – otherwise, what’s the point?

Light-up Buffalo stompers, clear plastic galore and slogans a plenty: find out what Ashish X Topshop has in store for us

Whilst Ashish SS14 was an all-sequin-everything logo-brandished extravaganza, for AW14 Ashish Gupta looked to the ‘90s. Sending a hypnotic haze of sequins down the catwalk, along with a whirlwind of LED light-up super-stomping boots and a hurricane of ’90s relics and references – crimped hair crowned with tiaras, frayed, feathered and ruffled denim, acid-bright eye make-up and enough glitter to give the fairy godmother a run for her money, there is no need to explain why we’re so excited for the tenth installment of Ashish X Topshop.

Staying true to his tongue-in-cheek aesthetic, for this collection, entitled ‘Beach Please!’, Ashish is taking us on a one way trip to his dream resort – ‘Paradise Hotel’. The logo of which he has emblazoned on beach towelling textured garments and accessories along with the slogans ‘Service Please’ and ‘Do Not Disturb’. “I love this collection, it’s perfect for the beach and for pool parties, and they have the best ones at the Paradise Hotel!” says Ashish.  “I hope it’s going to be as much fun to wear as it has been to design!” With clear plastic-fantastic backpacks, candy coloured LED light up Buffalo stompers and flesh bearing net dresses all featuring in the collection, it doesn’t get much more fun to wear than that!

5347b0b4f241e1397207220

This 10th collaboration in as many years with Ashish reaffirms Topshop’s ongoing support of London design talent, both through the British Fashion Council’s NEWGEN scheme and collaborations. The collection will be stocked internationally in flagship Topshop stores from May 29th.

For Cutler and Gross’ latest collection, think English garden party.Bone china teapots on fine lace tablecloths under the shade of an apple tree, with lashings of Earl Grey and jasmine; Pimm’s with cucumber; cream and jam sponge; tennis on the lawn; daisy chains and ladybirds aplenty.

0105[3][4][2][10]

Amongst the host of incredible eyewear, Cutler and Gross present the star of the collection; the new cat eye 1112. The granny-chic frame makes it debut this spring and will no doubt be a huge success. The romance of antique, wooden-framed, glass-cased entomology is, in typical Cutler and Gross style, mixed up with cutting edge technology. Inspired by winged insects presevered in amber, the technique has been replicated in contemporary form by their new 3D laminated printed technique. Undeniably romantic and feminine with a vintage feel, its the ideal frame for British springtime. We love this incred illustration by Coco Pit.

Renowned for their glasses handmade in Italian acetate with hand-polished finishes and 100% UV 400 absorbing lenses, Cutler and Gross are also offering the 1112 in Black and Dark Turtle.
