“A collection to meet, hang out and then end up in bed together.” Katie Eary ticked all the boxes for AW16.

Stripes and swirls

Of course with Eary, it’s all about the prints, that’s just the way it is. For AW16 we were treated to oversized, spaced out paisley, oversized geometric shapes whose edges never quite met and some almost cute, kinda creepy bug-eyed fish. It wouldn’t be Katie Eary show without clashes and colours to covet.

Interrelations

Eary looked back to the 70s for AW16 but of course, to pin point one style icon wouldn’t have been enough. Taking all the glamour of Bowie (royal blue velvet YES), the uncomfortable bizarreness of Lou Reed (odd fitting geometrics) and the wild energy of Iggy Pop (pure colour everywhere), she rolled them all into one, along with those who adored them. Nico’s eyelashes even got a look in.

Centre stage

With the rockstar influence this season, it was in a way subtler. AW16 was more about an attitude than putting across an image. Sure the prints were loud and the colours were rich but this is an entirely wearable collection even for the quieter dressers. Eary has said everything for you on your behalf in a look, oozing cool.

AS_KATIE_EARY_AW16_BS_066

We caught up with Eary to ask her about the collection…

Who’s the ultimate pin up for AW16?

This season it’s Iggy POP!

What was the starting point on your mood board?

I’ve been attracted to a period of time in the early 70s when all manner of new creative forces were cross pollinating.

Inspired by ‘The Sacred Triangle’ documentary, directed by Alec Lindsell. Bowie, Iggy & Lou 1971-1973. Based on the influences artists Lou Reed and Iggy Pop had on David Bowie and how Bowie had in-turn been fundamental in the nurture of their 70s careers. I started looking at who was shagging who, who stole moves from who, I have been completely transfixed on it all.

Where is the ideal time and place for the collection to be worn?

When wanting to impress the girl/guy your into. Sexy clothing for sexy people. I’ve created a collection to meet, hang out and then end up in bed together.

What’s in the details?

Evolved print and placement – working on my strongest skill, and making it stronger.

My favourite details are the silk embroidered fish on the mohair ombre knit pieces.

Are we going to be treated to any hair and make up surprises?

No. Not this time… hahaha.

Last season was all about the teenager, who’s under inspection this season?

This time, I’m looking the other way, This is about the rockstar, not the kid trying to be him.

SS16 was all in deliciously E number colours, what’s been your favourite shade for AW16?

Shades of aubergine, coal and flesh.

Are we going to have any cute cartoon friends again this season?

No not this time. I’ve developed a more ‘finished’ print this season, something I intend to keep working on and get better and better at it.

What’s your favourite piece from the collection?

The ‘zigzag snake’ silk dressing gown. To be worn as a dressing gown. And pj’s, but to be worn as pj’s.

What’s been on the speakers in the studio?

Stooges, Nico, Velvet Underground, Marvin Gaye, Pink Floyd, and Brian Jonestown Massacre.

After a successful menswear collaboration with Joseph Turvery, River Island have teamed up with another of Britain’s youngest and finest design talents, Katie Eary. The River Island Design Forum focuses on collaboration with some of London’s brightest designers, and at the British Fashion Council’s 7th Fashion Film Festival (sponsored by River Island) Katie Eary launched her womenswear collection for the brand.

The accompanying fashion film is directed by Kinga Burza, who’s worked on music videos for the likes of Ellie Goulding and Katy Perry in the past, and now designer Katie Eary. The creative pair together created a truly awesome and inspiring short film.

The film was inspired by the illuminate and dreamy photography of Rinko Kawauchi and Harley Weir, following the relationship between and Artist and their muse; the latter dressed solely in Katie Eary for River Island and played by model, Enikő Mihalik. Katie hooked up with close friend Kanye West for the soundtrack; ‘Blood on the Leaves’ from his recent album Yeezus. Check out the film below.

Katie Eary’s ‘flamingo massacre’ collection was a highlight of the Monday LC:M shows. And we want a leopard print skateboard.

Katie Eary Spring/Summer 2014 Backstage

What’s the must have accessory for SS14? Katie Eary’s pink and black leopard print skateboards. To be worn with the young starlet’s crazy cool ‘flamingo massacre’ collection if you dare. Today’s offering from Eary was perhaps her best yet. Last season’s fuchsias and purples morphed into red and pink clashing hues, and male and female models sashayed down the catwalk in flamingo and leopard print, swimwear and highlighter-bright Nikes.

The show was certainly a favourite among the LC:M crowds. Reggie Yates, the ubiquitous David Gandy and Tinie Tempah looked dapper on the front row, while bloggers, photographers and journalists stood and craned their necks to get a glimpse (or a Vine) of the unisex spring/summer action.

The biggest cheer of the day, however, was reserved for Ms Eary herself, who dashed out and sprinted down the runway at the close of the show, all dip-dyed pink hair and fizzing energy. This is a woman at the height of her powers. She plays the menswear scene at their own game and nails it every time. Total girl crush.

Digi-print blooms and cartoon blue lobster prints were on the menu at Katie Eary’s AW13 show. Kaleidoscopic pink prints on coats, shirts and hoodies ruled Eary’s runway, topped off with R&B-worthy gold choker chains. Paired with slick-back hair, shades and power shoulder coats, it was all a bit Patrick Bateman gone to Miami.

There was also a nod to the gothic, with models sporting vampire fangs. No surprise there, given that Eary professes to love scream movies – but knowing Eary and her love of all things 90s, her inspiration’s probably more likely to be Angel or Spike in rather than soppy, besotted Edward Cullen in Twilight. American Psycho, Buffy, whatever – we’re thinking that the heady horror in her collection will be loved by men and women alike.

Katie Eary, one of London’s most promising young designers, showcased her AW12 collection Darker Side of the Fairy Tale today. We were treated to another viewing of her sombre short film – styled by Wonderland’s Wey Perry featuring interplaying textures and silhouettes – and sat down with Katie to discuss the darkly fantastical collection. Pick through our exclusive pictures of Monday’s event, above.

All of your collections seem to have a bold theme, what was the particular theme behind your AW12 collection?

Yeah, there’s always such a strong theme. Like this one was everything dark to do with fairy tales. With every kid’s fairy tale, like Sleeping Beauty or Lord of The Rings, there’s always this dark army growing, so I just wanted to create one. This whole collection was truly self-indulgent, my first completely independent line away from The British Fashion Council and NEWGEN. I felt free to do whatever I wanted and it was very exciting. From the elf ears to the crazy war hammer trainers, we pulled out the stops for everything.

So, what was the inspiration behind your theme this time round?

You’ve got to start somewhere. Mine was coming up with the theme and an idea. I don’t know all these things just come to me and I just thought well, I love creating all this sort of mad stuff and how can I tie in War Hammer and Zelder and Dungeons and Dragons.

Did you like all that sort of thing when you were younger?

Yeah, I loved War Hammer. I never played it but I was always looking in windows and all the guys who play it are super nerdy. They literally get a ruler out and they battle and they take it really serious. Obviously, I wasn’t into it that sort of way. Their names are hilarious; there’s one called something shaggeth. It’s just jokes really.

Did you have any challenges with the collection?

Yeah, well this one was extremely couture and made by hand. My whole teams hands are usually covered in cuts and edge-dye and leather, all of the black it goes into little cuts and your fingers so by the time it comes to a show they all look like little goblins and the same with me. This one was even harder considering the materials that we used. I could use whatever I wanted; leather, pony skin, fur. So many textures. You would never usually have a completely pony skin bag because of the sheer weight of it but we just didn’t want to spare anything. The idea was how can we make everything look evil. Probably the hardest we’ve ever dealt with.

What’s going to be happening for you in the future?

I want to work in a big fashion house and I have been approached by one but can’t say just yet who it is. That is like the dream. I feel like it’s happening. I’ve worked for some incredible people already like Kanye [West]. It’s amazing because it means that I can see my dreams form. Money has always been a problem, even when you have good jobs. Things get more expensive season by season so it always feel like you are just coasting and can’t make any more. Where as if you have something like that going on, you can realise your dreams.

W you not feel like you were quite controlled working In House?

This is an adventure. I have no idea how it’s going to work. All I know is that I have a vision and they approached me because they love what I do so hopefully, there shouldn’t be too much of a problem. They’ve pulled me in for a reason. They need rejuvenation and that’s defiantly something that I can give.
