Rock and roll leaders have been wearing the same Dr Martens as you for the last 55 years. The music industry’s long standing love affair with the brand has been documented in their new book A History of Rebellious Self Expression. The favoured footwear for The Clash, The Cure and The Who to name a few, Martin Roach put to paper and explored the relationship in popular culture between DMs with an extensive look into the brand history. With 220 photographs and interviews with musicians and industry names, it’s the most rebellious coffee table book to date.

Encompassing diversity in all its guises, Dr. Martens unveil their #StandForSomething campaign for AW14

AW14:3

Expressing diversity as an art form, Dr. Martens have revealed their new campaign for AW14. Featuring people from all ages and backgrounds, each person in the campaign shares one vital trait, they all #StandForSomething, because wearing Docs is more than just a fashion choice, it’s a unique journey of self expression. A journey steeped in history, and that’s phrasing it briefly.

The campaign doesn’t stop here, it’s also set to be spread out across Dr. Martens social media outlets, where customers will be encouraged to upload images of themselves wearing their trusty Docs, demonstrating what they stand for as an individual, highlighting the diverse clientele that Dr. Martens attracts whilst offering an insight into the style of the customer and how they express themselves. The man behind the striking AW14 images? James Pearson Howes, who has previously shot for the likes of Margaret Howell.

We take a look at some of our favourite images from the campaign:

Skinhead wasn’t a trend it was a way of life. Adopting the ‘Spirit of 69’, Dr. Martens launch their most exciting campaign to date

Skinhead is more than merely a trend, it’s a way of life – well according to photographer Gavin Watson, writer and broadcaster Robert Elms, Mike Skinner and thousands of other individuals who have been involved in the movement, across the past four decades, it is, and they are right.

Introducing us to the ‘Spirit of 69’ campaign, Robert Elms told the story of his youth steeped in anecdotes of the era – from being jealous of his brother Reggie and his short-hair, denim jeans, braces, white socks and DM’s get-up (which drove his mother mad), to the style tips he took from the West Indian Families inhabiting Tower Hamlets at the time. Describing himself as a ‘youth culture archaeologist’, Elms transported us back to one of the most strident and striking movements ever experienced in the UK. The Bethnal Green boys were bored of the Mile End mods, they wanted the ‘tough stuff’. They were puritans, the sartorial brutalists of their age. “To look like that is not an accident,” says Elms. “Nothing in skinhead is an accident, it’s all planned and prescribed.”

Similarly for Watson, skinhead was a way of life. “The feeling was like heroin, it was an addiction for someone insecure,” he explained. But in a landscape where youths were bombarded by the sounds of Madness and The Specials and where skinheads received no positive press, Dr. Martens were the continuum in this story of cultural discovery. So re-adopting the 1969 significance that Dr. Martens possessed – trekking across London on a Saturday to the best stall in Shepherd’s Bush market to buy a pair of pristine boots with a cult record under your arm – this collection exemplifies the spirit of the era.

Sat in Bethnal Green Working Men’s club, feasting on a breakfast of English tea, marmalade on toast and Tunnock’s teacakes, there was no better place to screen the unique campaign film created by Mike Skinner which explored the sub-culture to nostalgic effect. Having also collaborated with other influential brands associated with the movement – Trojan Records, Edwin, Alpha and Brutus – the capsule collection was the perfect modern representation of back-to-basics skinhead style. Including tartan Brutus shirts, Edwin jeans, Alpha Industries MA-1 flight jackets, a Trojan Record bag and of course the original Dr. Martens models – the skinhead footwear of choice – this is quite possibly their most exciting collection to date.

The Dr. Martens ‘Spirit of 69’ collection will be available this September.

Beautifully Damned: As sugarcoated naivety and candy colours trend this season – much too soon before real summer – we hone in on the trend to inject it with a sullied new spirit, full of quiet revolt. Re-visiting Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides, this month’s shoot encapsulates a whimsical, unhinged innocence – an alternative to the suffocating pastel sweetness and puffy fifties shapes pervading throughout the spring/summer collections. Captured by Martha Boxley’s cinematic lens, the youthful endearment of the images gives its starring motif – florals – a poetic new lease of life. While some designers opted for tradition, lace appliqué and couture ambition (à la Chanel and Pucci), others like Christopher Kane dived headfirst to churn out childlike stickers on transparent organza chiffon, as inspired by a girl’s musings on her bedroom wall.

Current London print queen Mary Katrantzou sought a slouchier, and ultimately cooler, silhouette with photo-glazing of decadent gardens forming a lush canvas on her sculptural, slightly tailored cuts. Those more attuned to the harder winter season [unable to detract from long, oversized silhouettes] will revel in the multiplicity the trend provides: sports-infused bulky shoes (from trainers to Doc Martens to the silvery Rochas pair seen above) provide an edge to the ethereal all-white dresses. Indeed, it’s icy white – the colour of the season – lead by Louis Vuitton, Jil Sander and Versace that balances the sugarcane saturation of girls on horses at an idyllic fairground; following Coppola’s suit, this is a more voyeuristic, yet not less any majestic, walk across this season’s fairy tale park.
