The self-described “modern traditionalists” team up with high street retailer River Island for a dark and cinematic AW14 collection

Baartmans and Siegel for River Island

British-Dutch duo Wouter Baartmans and Amber Siegel of Baartmans and Siegel have been recently announced as the latest menswear label to collaborate with high street retailer River Island. The London-based pair, who met while working at Viktor & Rolf, consider themselves to be “modern traditionalists,” always championing an aesthetic that epitomises innovative design, but one that is deeply rooted in classic craftsmanship.

The 12-piece AW14 Baartmans and Siegel for River Island collection will be available online and in selected UK and international stores this September 2014. The film noir inspired line features a strong male protagonist, with references to the dystopian works of Phillip K. Dick and film director Michael Mann. Sharply tailored outerwear and structured jackets are central to the collection, as the classic men’s colour palette of navy, black and charcoal is reimagined by Baartmans and Siegel into cool and distinctive pieces for AW14.

The partners say that when working on the capsule collection’s concept, “We felt it was important for us to carry through our identity of indulgent masculinity with our signature fabrics and refined classic silhouettes. River Island’s responsiveness and huge industry network has allowed us to maintain our high level of craftsmanship, which has been most refreshing. We have also been able to explore new technical aspects that we have wished to create for some time, which has been key in helping to create an accessible wardrobe with effortless style.” Having now drawn the attention of industry press, the duo’s new River Island collaboration reaffirms their position as “ones to watch.”

To accompany the release of Baartmans and Siegel for River Island, a short film directed by Ryan Hopkinson (below) was premiered at London Collection’s: Men in June. The film forms part of British Fashion Council’s Fashion Film initiative, which, now in its sixth season, aims to recognise the ongoing development of fashion film as an important industry medium, while helping to foster relationships between fashion designers and fashion filmmakers.

A counterpoint of relaxation versus tension. Viktor & Rolf’s SS15 ‘Bodyworks’ collection takes their Monsieur from office to gym

Viktor & Rolf SS15

An interpretation of movement, SS15 Monsieur ‘Bodyworks’ by  Viktor & Rolf transitions the man from office to gym. With a collection that is an intelligent hybrid of relaxation versus tension, a jersey blazer is paired with logo sweatshirts, a polo shirt is paired with a smart fine knit jersey and modern tailoring has active wear quirks such as combat pockets on an otherwise traditional suit.

Strong statement pieces are the result of a trompe l’oeil effect that gives the illusion of layering throughout the collection, whilst influences from early 20th century modern art are clear with Cubist prints that cover a denim jacket and a mackintosh, filtering through to scarves and shirts where the pattern takes on a supporting role under a subtly detailed silver-grey dinner jacket. Other details include both shirts and trousers made from contrasting fabric, sewn together like hyper chic patchwork.

A masculine colour card underlines the essence of the collection. Icy blue, pearl grey, and dark aubergine are brightened with highlights of an orange cuff and collar that shine through a super casual waxed pinstripe suit, and head to toe teal makes light of office wear.

The masculine sport/work essence of the collection is finished with a modern interpretation of the classic men’s shoe. Patent leather brogues have a workout gear edge with complimentary rubber stripes running around the sole and smart suits are downplayed with leather high top trainers of the same colour. Monsieur transitions from office to gym with a little help from the dynamic duo, Viktor & Rolf.

The lovely Stephanie Hall from Models 1 came round for a cuppa and to chat to us about her L.A dreams.

Stephanie Hall

Age: 17 (18 very soon!)

Hometown: Surrey

I was scouted: Four years ago in my local shopping centre. Then I did lots of test shoots and started working properly when I was 16.

Favourite childhood memory: My family holidays to Center Parcs.

Hobbies: I used to go to stage school every Friday to do dancing, singing and acting. I would still go if I had time.

Dream destination: I’ve always wanted to go to LA. I would love to go for work & shoot on a beach or something. That would be my perfect job.

Fear: Of drowning.

Current obsession: My friend has a Range Rover and they keep letting me use it, I love driving around for ages.

Dream dinner date: Lee Evans.

First CD I bought: I’m not sure, but I remember being really excited about Sean Kingston’s ‘Beautiful Girl’ coming out.

Most treasured possession: Probably my Celine bags.

Shows walked: Viktor & Rolf couture, Celine, Missoni, Dolce & Gabbana, Bottega Veneta, Versace, Calvin Klein, Thomas Tait, Moschino Cheap & Chic…

Career highlight: Shooting a big editorial with other big British models like Jourdan and Cara.

Future plans: To carry on modelling full time & then maybe behind the scenes at a magazine or something

Myself in three words: Sarcastic, tall, troublemaker

Boyish British actor Ben Barnes, star of Killing Bono, was shot for Wonderland by world-renowned photographer Rankin, founder of Dazed & Confused magazine, whose storied lens has captured everyone from Kate Moss to Damien Hirst to David Bowie.

Styled by Way Perry, Wonderland‘s men’s fashion editor, combining Ralph Lauren, Viktor & Rolf and a straitjacket from Angels, Barnes is shown here in poses and attitudes, markedly different from those of his floppy-haired, heart-throb role in The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.

See the full Wonderland feature, in which Barnes talks of his stab at pop stardom and shattering his sweetheart typecast here.
