Scanning adoringly through FENDI’s AW16 collection, Karl’s stamp is clear: swimming in undulating curves and pairing pastels with an earthy palette, it’s an expert’s manipulation of modern tastes and classic forms. Incomparable and ever-so-slightly intimidating, when Wonderland was offered the chance to interview FENDI frontman Karl Lagerfeld, we called upon our favourite fashion friends to help. Here, the Wonderland team and our closest contributors quizzed Karl on his inspirations (by which he responded with glittering pearls of wisdom) and whether we can get a space on the guest list for our Bag Bugs.

Karl, season after season, collection after collection, you tap into your never-ending creative whirlpool of ideas. Is there a decade you either consciously or subconsciously revisit? – Princess Julia

I don’t think about it. I live for today, tomorrow, and maybe after tomorrow. I like to change as well, while the world is changing. With fashion you have to. That’s what fashion is about! Also, never-ending inspiration is the most important thing. One thing always inspires the next. Creativity with no vision, or developed with people who have no talent to build something, it’s worthless. I am happy to say that I work with great people who can understand and realise my ideas. It is a mix of possibility of ideas and the possibility to make them modern, right, beautiful — and that’s it.

You once said: “If someone asks me what fashion is, I don’t know, but 30 years later it all becomes clear”. Which trends from the last three decades has that mantra become most true about? – Jack Mills

There are no rules, trends come and go. Fashion is about the “moment”, not about museum exhibits. The best thing that can happen to a dress is that it gets worn.

In the past, you’ve said FENDI was “grunge before grunge was invented”. Which subcultures or youth culture movements are you most fond of? – Lily Walker

I like very much the Futurist movement, in particular Giacomo Balla and Giorgio De Chirico. They were the first modernists, just like FENDI.

Do FENDI fur charms with faces count as +1 at a party? – Tea Hacic-Vlahovic

There is The Karlito, which is a kind of fur monster inspired by me. I’m also one with a large collar, with a kind of black tie!

Is there any advice you wish you’d had when you were starting out? – David Uzochukwu

What I can say today is that you always have to think that you can do better, that you have to make an effort. I’m never completely satisfied with what I do. I always think about the next and want to do more, because I think I can do better and improve. That’s how I think about myself.

In the age of the influencer, what is the modern role of a muse? Do you seek out muses with their digital footprint in mind? How do you ensure you are not just fetishising their social media reach? – Hynam Kendall

It is very difficult to identify a specific woman. Our job is to propose collections hoping that many women will appreciate what we do. Saying “it’s for this kind of woman and not for the other”, it’s a too sharp remark.

Your association with FENDI stretches back far further than your work at Chanel. What’s the allure of the brand for you? Do you think the sensibilities of the Italian woman differ from that of the French? – Richard Mortimer

FENDI is the unique craftsmanship of the best Italian artisans. The secret is also that this Maison is rooted in Italy from the first day of its creation, also after the acquisition from LVMH group. That gives to the brand a unique international dimension and the possibility to be modern and avant-garde at the same time. It gained a global dimension with a strong Italian and rRman unique backbone.

You speak so many languages, which do you think in? Do you think it has an effect on the way your work? – Kat Jenkins

I don’t think about it, I adapt easily. I have many personalities. You’ve spoken about being inspired by the shapes in rice fields to create new methods of working with fur.

Where was the most unexpected place you found inspiration for the brand’s AW16 collection? – Huw Gwyther

I like experimenting on materials, mixing things that are not supposed to go together. I am against nothing. I like things to be what they don’t at first seem. For instance, the FENDI fall/winter 2016-17 collection was a beautiful mix of materials, like fur that looked like velvet or silk jacquard that looked like leather. Also, the inspiration — we mixed Japanese botanical flowers with gravitational waves… And they looked so modern!

In the 90s, you would show 200 look collections for FENDI. The collections are still huge today, but how was the designing and creating process back then without the instancy of communication we have today? – Matthew Josephs

It’s easy to work with me in terms of fashion, because I sketch in a way that [allows people to] do the dresses without me coming in for a fitting. I have a vision, I put it on paper and the others translate it on toiles for RTW or fur that are perfect. But my sketches always come with a technical explanation that show the atelier what I want. Today I can send my designs directly from my iPhone. Back when I started there was no fax and it would take 3 weeks to ship a package in the mail!

Dior’s latest sunglasses offering will you have yearning for summer.

Dior can always be trusted to reinterpret a classic style with pure elegance, not least of all when it comes to their iconic range of eyewear. From Kendall Jenner to RiRi, all your fave fashion gals know where to go for shades to wear on deliciously sun-drenched summer days. While admittedly the prospect of sun may feel far away in the middle of gloomy Feb, we’re pretty sure these sun-specs could come in handy in the greyer months for those (all too frequent) mornings after the night before.

If you’re not already a mega-fan of Dior’s sunglasses offering, then let the video they released this week give you a closer look at their latest style, the DiorSplit. A modern twist on the classic aviator, they feature a bold horizontal stripe across the eye which is perfectly balanced with an ultra-thin, feminine frame. Available in five different colour palettes, you can choose your sunglasses to match your outfit (how Clueless!). Think gold frames with silver, pink or green lenses, or a silver frame set off perfectly with lenses in a light or dark blue. What’s best? You don’t have to wait ‘til summer to get your hands on a pair, you can head over to Dior’s website and pick some up now.

All natural and all star. Karl Lagerfeld looked back to the Earth for Chanel Haute Couture SS16.

Karl’s Ark

Naturally, the set has to be a talking point at a Chanel show. With a consistently mastered finish to each collection, its venue often now becomes more eagerly awaited than the clothes. For Couture SS16 we were treated to a zen ark. Each model carefully shut away behind a wooden door, released to tread through lush grass, lily pads scattered on ponds and a faux blue sky.

Au Naturel

Karl Lagerfeld’s novelty this season lay in the materials the collection was made from. The fluffiest wild cotton and unbelievably, wood chips, were used amongst the bouclés and blazers we’re used to. Even prints boiled down the basic theme, with delicate leaves, bugs and flowers flocking gowns and embroidered and beaded onto looks in petal tones.

Squad Goals

Just like the set, the models have become almost as important as the collection itself and Karl’s picks are often unparalleled, scooping up the fashion world’s favourites as well as propelling new faces towards fame. This season the Hadid sisters, Kendall Jenner, Soo Joo, Linesiy Montero, Molly Bair and Linsey Wixon all walked and we want to join their gang.

The greats are lined up for Balmain’s SS16 campaign. If it ain’t broke…

Step aside newbies, Naomi, Claudia and Cindy have stepped into their old shoes to become the faces of Balmain’s SS16 campaign. Shot by Steven Klein with creative direction by Pascal Dangin the three super-models look enviably on brand for Balmain with perfect bed head and the SS16 looks that have already  been copied by the high street ten times over.

We’re all for fresh new talent but sometimes, the legends do it best. Kendall and Kylie and Gigi and Bella might have been recruited for the #BalmainArmy but Naomi, Claudia and Cindy are stepping up to lead the way once more.

Warp records’ latest signing is a genre-bending gem.

There’s no doubt that Warp are one of the world’s most daring record labels. Over the past 26 years, they’ve churned out a steady slew of game-changing artists – Nightmares On Wax, Aphex Twin, Jamie Lidell and Flying Lotus, to name a few – ultimately carving out a path for genre-bending vocalists such as their latest signing, Lafawndah, who is going to make the next year in music very interesting indeed.

In an era where Kylie, Kendall and Kim rule, finding a cool female figure to admire is like finding a rare gem. Lafawndah has power in her presence and in her beats – a curious new creature for us to obsess over on the Internet. In her video for NTS Live, the Iranian native dons a men’s white t-shirt, sculpted nails and hair piled on top of her head in thick braids. She exudes a feminine sensuality with her sweet high octane voice woven into hard basslines, all of her elements together creating energy, like a twisted R&B star.

In true Warp style, Lafawndah has a blatant disregard for anything middle-of-the-road and pieces together a visual identity and sound from everywhere she has ever lived or travelled. Be it Tehran, Paris, Zurich, Brooklyn or a remote Caribbean island, Zouk, hard dance and R&B intertwine in her 4-track EP, Tan, which is out on 5th February 2016. It appears that another game-changer has been added to the Warp family and we’re keeping our eyes on her next moves.

We stole a quick 60 seconds with Lafawndah, ahead of her release.  Before we begin, take a peek at the video for the first single, also called Tan.

Can you tell us about the name, where did it come from?

It was the name of my sex education teacher at school in Iran.

When did you first realise you wanted to make music?

When I covered Jamiroquai aged 13 in front of 500 people and it felt good.

What was the inspiration behind your new EP, Tan.

Walking down Langstrasse in Zurich, bombarded by music bursting from Mexican,  Serbian, Jamaican, Liberian, Korean and Russian clubs all at once and immediately later being thrust into the throb of Fire Island.

What inspires you to write?

Whales, metal, agave, courage, orgasms, pomegranates, razors, lips, raw fish, hackers, mushrooms, injustice, humming birds, islands, minds, tides, balls, walls.

You’ve just been signed to Warp, what was that process like?

Fluid.

Your musical influences like  Grace Jones, Lady Saw, Psychic TV, Kate Bush and Missy Elliot are all really eclectic, how do you think you translate them all into your music?

Freedom inspires me.

You describe yourself a conceptualist and a performer, talk to us about that.

Well, I do believe I can fly.

If you had to describe your sound in three words, what would they be?

Pelvic, boom and bone.

The imagery that goes with your music is quite unique, was that a conscious choice to make the visuals as important as the sound?

Bah, yes!

What is your goal, career-wise?

Feed eyes, ears, feet.

Each year, thousands of girls (and boys) wait in anticipation around the globe ready to lock their eyes on the impossibly toned women that strut down the runway for the Victoria’s Secret show. Being an angel is a privilege and an honour (dontcha know?) and nowadays it’s more about the girls themselves that grace our screens than the skimpy outfits they’re wearing. Never free from controversy, this year the show has already caused plenty of pre-show drama with the crowning of Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid as Angels meaning VS veteran Jourdan Dunn was ousted (ouch) and RiRi, in a glorious show of support, pulled out of the show. Seriously, you couldn’t make this kind of controversy up!

Because at Wonderland we – like all of you – are just so obsessed, we’ve compiled our best and most shocking VS show moments, all in appreciation of tonights show. Get ready, we’ve really outdone ourselves this time.

Justin Bieber

Biebs performing the VS show will always be a highlight. The (then) tweenager was obviously in total heaven and – let’s be honest – everyone could see themselves in that poor hormone filled boy.

The Wings

victorias-secret-fashion-show-1998-tyra-banks

Before J-B and candy canes, there was the birth of the first ever Victoria’s Secret wings. So incredibly modelled here by Tyra Banks, it feels like this surely has to go down as a slice of important fashion history.

Adam Levine having a snog on the runway

victorias-secret-fashion-show-2011-adam-levine-anne-vyalitsyna

When Adam Levine and Anne V walked down the runway hand in hand in 2011, it was totally a moment. Sadly, the pair broke up. R.I.P.

The Spice Girls

victorias-secret-fashion-show-2007-spice-girls

Does this even need explaining?

Justin Timberlake

victoria-secret-show4

Victoria’s Secret models AND Justin Timberlake all in one room? That was surely too much sexy to handle.

Taylor Swift + Karlie Kloss = BFF

23AC1F1C00000578-0-image-56_1417545990324

This was when we first began to get an inkling of HOW BLOODY GOOD it would be to be in Taylor Swift’s girl gang. The pair stormed the runway and looked completely (ridiculously even) gorgeous whilst doing it. Not that we’re jealous, or anything.

Arianna Grande EG A Mouse

23AC0B8400000578-2857891-image-92_1417546374281

Because we’re a little bit mean, we really can’t get over this photo of Arianna (a firm Wonderland fave we might add) cowering away from those ginormous wings. We’d do the same, babe.

Last year, a band of almost-brothers (and three nearly-sisters) came together to form fiercely anonymous French fashion brand, Vetements. Group founder Demna Gvasalia and Vetements’ remaining six all had one thing in common before starting the project: they worked, contractually, for someone else. Houses like Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga and Margiela were where the Vetements crowd started out. Initiated as a weekend project to dress the founders’ girlfriends, the brand evolved into a cult buy. Like a true guerrilla collective, their debut collection was stitched together in Gvasalia’s living room, the AW15 show was held in notorious Parisian gay club Le Depot, and the models were Facebook-cast.

“It’s more real, more honest and believable and the people who look at what we are doing know and understand [this]. We would go to weird parties in Paris and take photos of weird girls with bad attitudes, and recruit that way too. Not pretty or girly, but boyish and real. And they became part of our gang. We will continue to do that. What we do is real. They become our friends after the casting. They come hang out and stay in our studio drinking wine and smoking cigarettes.”
