Aesthetically speaking, Starcrawler looks as if they were like they were plucked from a faded ’70s Polaroid. Once infamous for spitting fake blood into the audience, their upcoming music is influenced by a self-styled vision of epic Hollywood Babylon – while still writing “mean songs about shitty people.”
Raven-haired front woman Arrow de Wilde, guitarists Henri Cash and his brother Bill Cash (who also plays pedal steel), bassist Tim Franco and drummer Seth Carolina are a bohemian, so-what rock band seemingly plucked from a faded ‘70s Polaroid. Starcrawler formed in LA after Arrow met Henri when she spotted him carrying a tuba through the school corridors. United by a shared love of The Cramps, punk urgency and a double dose of chaos, the band built their self-titled 2018 debut around live recording set-ups, giving it a sweat-through-the-speakers, loose-limbed energy. On stage, they earned a reputation for volatile, theatrical performances, once becoming infamous for spitting fake blood into the front row. Off stage, they quickly attracted admirers including Dave Grohl, Jack White, Shirley Manson and Iggy Pop. Now, three albums in, Starcrawler are entering what they describe as a new era: an expanded, self-styled vision of epic Hollywood Babylon.
What’s your earliest memory of music having an effect on you?
Probably watching Schoolhouse Rock! as a kid. Honestly, it was such an amazing show with incredible songs. “Conjunction Junction [What’s Your Function?]” and “Figure 8” were pretty eye-opening. Also, “Fruit Salad” by The Wiggles.
What does it mean to you to be original?
Being original can be a bit tricky in that the harder you try, the less genuine you seem. Trusting your gut and doing what comes naturally to you is usually the best option.
When did you last get in trouble?
When we tried to board a Delta flight with Group A when our boarding passes were with Group D.
What’s turning you on creatively right now?
Watching cartoons, drinking Cactus Cooler and listening to Bob Seger.
What’s been your greatest act of artistic rebellion?
That’s kind of a hard one. Probably writing mean songs about shitty people. We’ve go tone coming out pretty soon…
