NYFW Yearbook Superlatives

We reflect on NYFW with a few yearbook superlatives. First up most likely to become a rockstar…

Most likely to become a rockstar:

Tommy Hilfiger

With Sgt. Pepper-inspired capes, and a Hard Rock-approved Jimi Hendrix soundtrack, this season’s Tommy Hilfiger is what rock legends are made of. Throw in some studded suede, Woodstock-approved patchwork denim, and real-life rockstar cred in the form of Jagger progeny Georgia May, and you’ve got yourself one backstage pass for the Stairway to Heaven.

Cutest couple:

Betsey Johnson

We knew lovable Cody Harris was gay (after all, his nickname was Gay Cody) but Homecoming King Bradley Miller? We didn’t see that one coming either, but apparently they opened for Betsey Johnson’s ‘Prenup’ show, dressed in black and white, holding a bouquet together. (Cody wanted the man-sized wedding dress, but Sharon Needles got to wear it.)

Most likely to kill her husband:

Marc Jacobs

She might have been the best at Home Ec, but Marc Jacobs’ girl is destined to go off the deep end. Circling a windowless Peptol Mismol-colored house – barely distinguishable in a parade of identical black-bobbed housewives – her life after Senior year is Disturbia indeed, complete with drab military uniforms, and a monotonous robot’s voice for company.

Most likely to get arrested:

Jeremy Scott

Turn down for what? It won’t be first-degree murder a la Marc Jacobs girl, but the parents of Jeremy Scott’s girl are most likely to get a call one night that their baby is in a holding cell. Drug possession, driving under the influence, or/and refusal to turn down the music, resulting in an altercation with police. But hey, at least it was a fun night – and I heard Miley Cyrus showed up.

Most changed since freshman year:

Hood By Air

New-kid Shayne Oliver might have been slacking off at first, but he definitely had a turnaround, graduating from logo-emblazoned everything (tees, jeans, and apronlike sheaths) to pieces straight from the Rick Owens lineup. Still plenty of denim, braided leather, and room for improvement, but hey – that’s what uni’s for, right? (Also: Best dog. Best live gospel choir. Best model in crutches. And best plexiglas pillories.)

Most out of this world:

Rodarte

She always did like Science, but after she won Homecoming Queen, the Rodarte girl was never the same again. Still hot, but like, obsessed with outer space. Thigh-high boots, paneled outerwear- it got a little weird for this teen queen (not to mention, she wore that damn Homecoming dress to tatters).

Most likely to join a convent:

Versus Versace

Just kidding.

NYFW: Rodarte SS15

To the sound of a post-apocalyptic hum we saw teen-Queen sensibilities and a space-age-shipwreck at Rodarte SS15

Out of this world

After a space-age shipwreck, Barbarella washes up on shore to become the local high school’s new prom queen. For that, surely an award for this season’s most insane mood board should go to Kate and Laura Mulleavy. Despite an unlikely combination, somehow it all made sense.

Thigh-high lace-up boots, paneled outerwear, and climbing-inspired belts: the first note was space-age, with fluorescent lights scattered amongst piles of shiny debris, and a disquieting, post-apocalyptic hum for a soundtrack.

The teen-Queen sensibility wasn’t far behind, with shoulder-baring sleeveless dresses in a simple silhouette falling somewhere between the Homecoming Dance and figure-skating finals. Carrie was in there with her tattered-up prom dress, and the striped piping off of Tommy Ross’s Letterman jacket – a tribute to the ill-fated misfits everywhere.

Litte mermaids

Then there was the mermaid part, reflected in scaly, medallion-sized sequins, and tangled fishnet galore, which substituted sometimes for crinoline, and hung scarf-like around the likes of cool girls Jamie Bochert, Sasha Luss, and Irina Kravchenko. There might have been an apocalypse, but the Mulleavys haven’t lost their sea legs.

7 WONDERS: NYFW HIGHLIGHTS

As London Fashion Week looms, we take a look back at the best moments from New York Fashion Week 2014.

1. There’s no girl more talked about in the Wonderland office than Kendall Jenner. So, naturally we were DYING over her catwalk debut at the Marc Jacobs show last night.

2. Rodarte Star Wars Dresses, Yoda on a dress why the hell not?

3. Beckhams selfie at VB, this year David decided to bring all the kids along, we’re still living in hope they’ll adopt us.

4. Work It Missy Elliot Soundtrack at Proenza Schouler, perfect soundtrack perfect show.

5. Lindsay Wixon in bed with Eliza Cummings, two of our biggest girl crushes in the same bed ugh.

6. Marc by Marc Jacobs by Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier, one of our favourite shows of the week.

7. Marc by Marc Jacobs (so good it gets two mentions) printed graphics by Fergus Purcell, designer for Palace skateboards.

Watch Elijah Wood in new Rodarte film This Must Be The Only Fantasy

Rodarte enlists the Hobbit star and Guinevere Van Seenus for their spring/summer 2013 fashion film, This Must Be The Only Fantasy. Plus: unicorns!

Even the best fashion films generally try to serve one purpose: show off clothes (usually in slow motion) and make people want to buy them. Thankfully, Laura and Kate Mulleavy feel differently. Their new 13 minute film, This Must Be The Only Fantasy, is a perfect example of a beautiful fashion film that also works on a narrative level that goes beyond “pretty lady in pretty dress”.

Present day Los Angeles gets a sci-fi Neverending Story makeover as suburban teen Lara (Sidney Williams) discovers a unicorn in her back yard and is then tasked with rescuing Elijah Wood by a fairy (Guinevere Van Seenus). The film marks Rodarte‘s third collaboration with director Todd Cole, and Beach House supplied the score. It’s very odd – imagine if Larry Clark took shrooms and then watched all three Lord of the Rings back to back – but we can’t think of a better homage to Rodarte’s spring/summer 2013 collection, which was loaded with mythology and medieval imagery.
