Taking Flight

The first clue was HBA’s FW16 invitation, featuring an image of a red patent leather suitcase, with an luggage tag reading “Pilgrim Series”; then, set on all the seats at the show, plane tickets for a flight from “NYC to NYFW” with a second reference to pilgrimage. There’d be an airport theme, that much was obvious – but how would it play out?

The first look offered little in terms of explanation – a black leather coat with matching floppy knee-high boots, worn by a redhead with long wavy hair escaping the bottom of a glittering silver headwrap – a beauty look more Studio 54 than stewardess. A few similar looks were followed by the first aesthetic plot twist – a male model with literal “pilgrim” hair, parted down the middle, with tightly wound curls on each side of his head like someone from the Mayflower. After that, all bets were off: more pilgrim hair, then luggage converted into blazers and dresses, disheveled shirts worn as hoods, and pieces like a floor-length fur coat wrapped over and over with bright red shrink wrap. It was a conflation of Mayflower pilgrims with pilgrims in the sense of travellers, with allusions everywhere to haphazardly tossed clothes, and printed luggage tags hanging off collars and boots and dresses.

Running Late

The haphazard feeling was conveyed by the models too, who halfway through the show started frantically crisscrossing in the wrong direction on the runway, like lost passengers scrambling to catch a flight. Pieces ran the gamut from more sport to more luxe, with plenty of HBA staples making the cut: straps, glistening patent leather, and zippers galore, resulting in the aggressive take-no-prisoners vibe at the core of the brand’s DNA.

In Crowd Meets Out Crowd

Befitting the airport theme, the venue this season was bigger than ever, and packed. With a front row including Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington, HBA has gone from humble beginnings to the hottest name around, somehow managing to appeal more and more to the establishment. This doesn’t mean HBA is forgetting their anti-establishment roots. Should anyone doubt where the brand’s loyalties lie – that is, who they exist for in the first place – the audience sparkled with misfits and bedazzled club kids, the underrepresented youth they’ve championed from Day 1, who are the real pilgrims pushing social progress into the future.

We reflect on NYFW with a few yearbook superlatives. First up most likely to become a rockstar…

Most likely to become a rockstar:

Tommy Hilfiger

With Sgt. Pepper-inspired capes, and a Hard Rock-approved Jimi Hendrix soundtrack, this season’s Tommy Hilfiger is what rock legends are made of.  Throw in some studded suede, Woodstock-approved patchwork denim, and real-life rockstar cred in the form of Jagger progeny Georgia May, and you’ve got yourself one backstage pass for the Stairway to Heaven.

Tommy Hilfiger

Cutest couple:

Betsey Johnson

We knew lovable Cody Harris was gay (after all, his nickname was Gay Cody) but Homecoming King Bradley Miller?  We didn’t see that one coming either, but apparently they opened for Betsey Johnson’s ‘Prenup’ show, dressed in black and white, holding a bouquet together.  (Cody wanted the man-sized wedding dress, but Sharon Needles got to wear it.)

Betsey Johnson

Most likely to kill her husband:

Marc Jacobs

She might have been the best at Home Ec, but Marc Jacobs’ girl is destined to go off the deep end.  Circling a windowless Peptol Mismol-colored house – barely distinguishable in a parade of identical black-bobbed housewives – her life after Senior year is Disturbia indeed, complete with drab military uniforms, and a monotonous robot’s voice for company.

Marc Jacobs

Most likely to get arrested:

Jeremy Scott

Turn down for what?  It won’t be first-degree murder a la Marc Jacobs girl, but the parents of Jeremy Scott’s girl are most likely to get a call one night that their baby is in a holding cell.  Drug possession, driving under the influence, or/and refusal to turn down the music, resulting in an altercation with police.  But hey, at least it was a fun night – and I heard Miley Cyrus showed up.

Jeremy Scott 2

Most changed since freshman year:

Hood By Air

New-kid Shayne Oliver might have been slacking off at first, but he definitely had a turnaround, graduating from logo-emblazoned everything (tees, jeans, and apronlike sheaths) to pieces straight from the Rick Owens lineup.  Still plenty of denim, braided leather, and room for improvement, but hey – that’s what uni’s for, right?  (Also: Best dog. Best live gospel choir.  Best model in crutches.  And best plexiglas pillories.)

Hood by Air

Most out of this world:

Rodarte

She always did like Science, but after she won Homecoming Queen, the Rodarte girl was never the same again.  Still hot, but like, obsessed with outer space.  Thigh-high boots, paneled outerwear- it got a little weird for this teen queen (not to mention, she wore that damn Homecoming dress to tatters).

Rodarte

Most likely to join a convent:

Versus Versace

Just kidding.

Roots

Shayne Oliver is growing up – or at least, getting serious about design.  He’s never been a designer’s designer, but then again, Hood By Air has never exactly been about the clothes, relying heavily instead on its cultlike following.  It’s a brand for the people – albeit a certain kind of people – marginalized, either sexually or by race, whom he celebrates through a “ghetto-gothic” aesthetic.

While the aesthetic didn’t change, the execution certainly did, graduating from last year’s logo-emblazoned everything (tees, jeans, and apronlike sheaths) to more sophisticated forms – trench coats, and even suits. There were still the tenets of HBA material world – denim, for example, and braided leather – yet nods to Rick Owens and Ann Demeulemeester raised the bar for HBA, culminating through the use of materials into a high-fashion (or at least higher-fashion) ‘asylum’ feel.

Bell and whistles

It wouldn’t be HBA without a spectacle though.  While last year’s show seemed to necessitate it (no complaints though – who didn’t love those irreverent blonde dream-catcher hair extensions, or the sudden evolution of the show into an extreme voguing extravaganza?), this year could have benefited from a little less.

Perhaps still unsure whether his fashion could stand alone, Oliver seemed keen to rack up the gasp-worthy diversions.  Each minute brought a new, Insta-ready moment.  There was a dog.  A live gospel choir.  Men in makeup.  Skinhead tattoos.  A model in crutches (despite his lack of an actual injury).

Locked up

Then of course, there were the plexiglas pillories, which imprisoned models by the hands and wrists – with no apparent explanation (except perhaps that because HBA boisters a quasi-political agenda, its models should do more than just walk).

Not that the models themselves don’t already subvert traditional fashion-show expectations.  Like John Paul Gaultier, HBA is committed to casting apparent misfits, models of varying shapes, colors, sizes – which this time Oliver featured in gender-crossing makeup.

More surprising than all this, however (let’s face it, we’re going to expect subversion from this brand ever after), is HBA’s unlikely growing fan base, which despite – or because of – the brand’s fanatical downtown status, has grown to include members of established fashion community.  I mean, the front row contained at least four card-carrying American Vogue personalities … and they seemed to be enjoying themselves.  Surely that’s a sign of something.

If you’re inked up ‘thuggin’, that’s what we like: Wonderland talks to Hood By Air’s Shayne Oliver about Paris, New York and fashion therapy…

Hood By Air 1

Shayne Oliver of Hood By Air is in his Chinatown, New York studio blasting the Pet Shop Boys. It’s mid-week late afternoon and the project team, spearheaded by the crisp-collared, padlock-chain-wearing designer, are punching out ideas for the next collection. Nothing of which he cares to specify yet, “We’re just vibing, really,” he drawls in his Brooklyn accent. Oliver was born and raised in New York, “I’m a BK baby,” and the label he formed at 19, (he’s now 26) was recently nominated by the CFDA for Menswear Designer of the Year, a distinction that hasn’t altered his perception of how they get things done, even for the anti-establishment streetwise label. “So, we have an office manager now,” he giggles.

The nod by the LVMH-funded foundation follows the luxury line’s A/W13 show, which featured old-school voguers and hair flippers to hair-raising, chill-inducing effect. “We wanted people to feel something,” Oliver says of the show. “If we can bring that feeling to people: mission accomplished.” Respected critic Maya Singer of Style.com hailed the show as the most exciting thing happening in New York fashion, and Oliver is touted as “reimagining Americana uniforms,” on the label’s profile on Cfda.com. High praise for a self-proclaimed “hood” boy.

“Now we’re part of a culture that once shunned us, or we were shunning,” says Oliver of partnering with the fund, he continues, “but it’s cool because they’re liking us for being us, which is why it’s dope. You never hear shit like, ‘Oh you should do this to be more commercial.’ It’s surprisingly chill.” To describe his aesthetic, Oliver is at a loss for the first time since we began chatting. He ums, and ahs before saying, “I don’t know, that’s why I have a logo. I agree when people say I have a New York aesthetic, but that comes from the mixture of inspirations growing up in New York affords you. It’s not so streamlined, it has a cut and paste aspect to it.” He knows the person he’s designing for, as an extension of himself and what he’s into across music, art, and fashion, he asserts, “What I do know is that I like a strong, powerful individual who is very confident in the way they give off their sexuality. They’re in this place were they’re ok being sexy, but also confident when they’re not being sexy. I like someone who knows how to take control of their hormonal output and the energy they put out.” For Oliver and his team, Hood By Air will always be about shows, not to “show off,” he says, “but to dress up.” For a while the label disbanded, they couldn’t afford to produce the social-commenting pop-pageants they wanted, “We were like, let’s cut it out,” says Oliver. Akeem Smith, who’s responsible for most of the visual imagery behind the label, went deeper into styling, and Oliver toured as a DJ. Like malleable boy bands from the 90s they reformed, after their sole endeavours helped finance the flamboyant runway shows again. “Being able to collaborate and just express certain things that drive me insane in my head [is why I show]. It’s also therapeutic,” says the nimble designer.

The early conception of the label as a passion project during Oliver’s teenage years is now seeing real strength as a business, a feat Oliver takes great pride in. “The label’s grown as opposed to this thing where I’m being thrown into an arena and I’m being blind-sided. I know what I want now in general, and every moment is about figuring out how to get it done. As opposed to me being like, ‘What do I actually want from this thing’? Or not even understanding myself. I started it pretty young, so I kind of grew up with it.” As for other side projects, Oliver is taking an interest in music creative direction. “I want to nurture artists, I think it’s quite old school in a way… Direct their whole album, show them how to wear the clothes. Perhaps it was one element of the music industry that people thought was frivolous, but was actually quite important. Now it all moves so quickly, the artist gets their hits and fades away, and that’s proving to fail,” Oliver reasons. For Oliver it’s about building positive relationships within a hub of well-deep talent, for a consumer experience that is artistic driven, rather than commerce-fuelled.

He’s finding New York a little boring now, too. “New York is in an anti-cultivate cultivation moment,” he says. “People haven’t been able to cultivate their own thing because they’re so busy at work just keeping their job. They’ve been thrown into a work field without having any interest in what they necessarily do. They say, ‘Oh I want to work in fashion,’ but they’re not confident in their ideas because they haven’t been given time to develop them. And they don’t care what’s happening around them, they just want to be involved. Some of the younger girls are lazy, too. You don’t have to save

too much energy to do it, but we should be a little bit more proactive towards our own ideas, and concepts.” Towards the back end of this conversation and in light of the plateauing affection he has for his home city, Oliver flirts with the idea of moving to Paris, “I, could, like, spend two or three months there I guess,” before pausing briefly. “No, actually, I’d get too homesick.”
