7 Wonders gives you the run down of the best winter festivals this season, perfect for skiing all day and partying all night.

Just because summer’s over, doesn’t mean you have to miss out on festival fun. All through winter, there’s a great choice of festivals happening across the UK and Europe, each making the coldest time of year also the coolest. Whether you’re solely in it for snow sports, are looking for some fresh après ski action or just want to party on piste, 7 Wonders is bringing you the best of this year’s winter festivals.

HORIZON FESTIVAL

Taking over Bansko ski resort in Bulgaria for its third year, Horizon festival combines skiing and partying in its own way. There’s 80 DJs and 30 hedonistic parties to choose from, all hosted in a multitude of unique venues, from secret mountain hotels to medieval banquet halls, pools and abandoned factories.

SNOWBOMBING

Head out to Mayrhofen, Austria for a week long whirlwind of world class DJs and bands, alongside some of the best skiing in Europe. By day, hit the piste, enjoy music on mountain-top stages and chill in the spa of the luxury hotel, then by night get ready for some white-hot parties at what some have called ‘the best show on snow’.

IBIZA ROCKS THE SNOW

Can’t wait until summer 2015 to hit Ibiza again? Then Ibiza Rocks the Snow is the winter festival for you. With a line-up including Clean Bandit, DJ EZ and Jackmaster, and club partners like Shorebitch, Seedy Sonics and Apex, you know this is going to be a week to remember.

SNOWBOXX

Taking over a town in the French alps for a week, Snowboxx promises a winter festival experience like no other. A week long snow escape, aside from partying and skiing, Snowboxx offers unique treats like outdoor pools, ice skating and the ‘retro olympics’ – vintage tunes and a piste-side BBQ. The lineup is still to be announced, but promises to be on top form.

THE BRITS

The Brits is great for hardcore ski and snowboarders, with a variety of ski championships going on, as well as an impressive après offering. With DJ Kommissar and Tony B on hand, plus more tbc, the music is as white-hot as the sport.

WINTER SESSIONS

Winter Sessions Weekender Festival, Chamonix, France – March 2012 from Tink Productions on Vimeo.

Set in Chamonix, in the French alps, Winter Sessions promises a two day boutique snow fuelled music festival with parties ‘til dawn, all in one of the most jaw dropping places in the world. The all star line-up of world class DJs and bands has a strong EDM bent, but with something for everyone to keep things interesting.

FREEZE FESTIVAL

While Freeze may be taking a year off for R&D, there’s no way a list of the best winter festivals would be complete without London’s own contribution. Coming back in 2015, Freeze takes over Clapham Common with snowboard championships and a giant main stage, bringing a bit of the alps to South London. In the mean time, check out ski season opening party Almost Ablaze at Bankside Vaults to get your season started with the best DJs with an après vibe.

What’s better than a party? Some might suggest that it’s party on wheels. It’s time to immerse yourself in Veuve Clicquot’s summer experience

Veuve Clicquot

What’s better than a party? Some might suggest that it’s party on wheels. And that’s exactly what luxury champagne brand Veuve Clicqout are delivering this summer, with their inaugural tour of events and festivals around the UK. Their airstream caravan of bubbly indulgence is by far the most retro festival cart we’ve seen. And to make it even more exciting, rapper and producer Tinie Tempah is joining them for the ride.

Vueve Clicquot is the perfect partner to compliment the most exclusive summer time events. From the Goodwood Festival of speed, to Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup at Cowdray Park. With the untimely knock out of the English football team, the champagne company ensures a summer that is still full of exciting sporting and musical events on your doorstep.

Rapper and producer Tempah, along with his label Disturbing London, have hand picked incredible DJ talent to play at several sporting events this summer. Luxury champagne and sporting events, do seem to be ideal teammates. Magnums and bottles of Veuve Clicquot will be served at every location, alongside art, design and a DJ space.

The tour hits the road with Goodwood Festival of speed (28th June), the racing weekend that partners vintage fashion with classic cars.  DJ trio All About She are the playing at the first stop. With their hit ‘Higher’ amongst the dance anthems of last summer, their EP ‘Go Slow’ will undoubtedly create the sounds that go perfectly with champagne. The next stop is the Veuve Clicquot Polo on the Beach event. Golden sand and a golden flute of champagne is sure to be a blissful weekend on 5th and 6th July at Watergate Bay. Tinie Tempah himself joins the tour at one of the most prestigious polo matches and social events of the season: the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup on 20th July at Cowdray Park. “It’s all about enjoying life, and doing it in style,” Tempah says. “Veuve Clicquot is all about spontaneity.”

Indeed, this is reflected in the unpredictable nature of the sporting world. Tempah added that he was excited to collaborate with Veuve Clicquot to support local musical talent throughout the UK. ‘[We’ve] selected some of the top emerging British DJs.”

A weekend of music, arts and culture is expected in the airstream’s final stop off. Veuve Clicquot will make its final pit stop at Festival No. 6, accompanied by Capital Xtra DJ Charlesy, whose hype and performance energy will be the perfect end to the festival season.

Damien Hirst, David Shrigley and Rankin – at a festival? Thanks to the creative genius of two Big Chill producers, the big-name artists will all be present at Nova, a festival with a (very arty) difference.Wonderland gets the low-down from Victoria Burns, its creative director.

How did you come up with the concept for Nova?

It’s a vision that has been developing for a while. Katrina Larkin and I have a friendship and creative understanding that spans 17 years. We’re driven by a passion for presenting different art forms in new, fun and exciting ways and an understanding that people don’t just go to festivals for the music.

We’re taking art out of galleries, theatre out of auditoriums and providing intimate platforms to listen to and partake in art. Having a whole lot of silly fun for its own sake really excites us.

Is it more about engaging the festival goers?

There are plenty of opportunities at Nova for observing some of the finest art practitioners and producers in the country, but just as many for getting involved. Hat making with milliner Katia Wengraf; jewellery making with sculptor Andrew Logan; crazy golf by artist Doug Fishbone, where each hole is designed by a different contemporary artist; naughty burlesque and boylesque workshops… Some you will only find out about when you get to Bignor.

Where did the name Nova come from?
You should have heard some of the others! We were drawn to beautiful images of the Hindu festival of Holi, which lead us to enhanced photos of stars being born – novae – hence Nova, which it also means new in Latin! It all sort of fell into place…

What festivals would you liken Nova to?

We don’t really see ourselves as a music festival, but an arts festival that includes music. Some of our art names are perhaps better know internationally than the music ones… Rankin, Hirst, Shrigley, Chapman. I am not sure any other festival has ventured into the world of crazy golf! If they have, I don’t think the course will have been designed by luminaries of the contemporary art world as ours has.

It seems like Nova is aiming to bring an excitement and accessibility to art – is that right?

The work that is being produced at Nova is as far as we can make it bespoke to the event or failing that, it will be informed by its surroundings. Our aim is for it to be immersive and interactive, we want our guests to experiment and explore- and have unpressurised fun!

The festival is family friendly, so is the Nova crowd a sparse age group?

Our audience can be of any age so long as they share the same spirit of adventure. All you need is an open heart and an open mind.

What are you looking forward to the most about the festival?

Building it! We can’t wait to get stuck in on site. Also a pint in the pub and a bob in the hot tubs, and watching all our guests finding their way around and interacting with what’s on offer. Plus, seeing how guests morph the site and bring it to life.

Nova festival is on from 5 to 8 July in West Sussex. Tickets are still available here.
