ADIDASxABRAMOVIC.WORK.RELATION.1-1

Regarded as “The Godmother of Performance Art,” Marina Abramović has teamed up with sportswear giant, adidas for a collaborative film project as an ode to the 2014 FIFA World Cup™. This year’s competition, celebrated in Brazil, was the inspiration for the short video: a re-staging of the dramatic art doyen’s 1978 production, “Work Relation”. In a three-minute display showcasing the parallels between art and sports performance, the black-and-white film champions the theme of collaboration intrinsic to both disciplines.

Creative director of adidas’ Sport Style Division Dirk Schönberger says: “Marina Abramović is among the most provocative and influential artists of our time. We are honoured to partner with her in the re-enactment of ‘Work Relation’, a piece demonstrating the importance of teamwork and collaboration—not only in sports but in all endeavours.”

The three-sequence performance re-imagined by filmmaker Dustin Lynn, highlights a unique trio of ways human labour can be used to transport stones from one end of a room to another. The three methods use the film’s participants as vehicles for illustrating Abramavić’s different models of cooperation and efficiency.

The artist’s final word? “Working as a team maximises commitment, dedication, and ultimately, performance. Collective energy is a source of great strength.”

Letting their creative licences run loose, Maarten Alexander and Sofie Middernacht have created an exclusive film for Wonderland taking inspiration from Julianne Moore’s character Charley, in A Single Man. Picture this, the doting housewife, she’s melancholic and cynical in equal measures, she’s partial to a drink (or three) and she adores nobody as much as she adores herself. But feeling lonely in her mansion house, she seeks pleasure and thrills. Entertaining herself with a pill or two, she routes through the medicine cupboard testing a string of prescription drugs, wearing her very best clothes to frolic in, just for the occasion…

Depeche Mode’s ‘Strangelove’ soundtracks the third instalment of Dior’s Secret Garden film series, by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin

Marking the third instalment of Dior’s Secret Garden film series, we are transported once again to Château de Versailles in Paris for three more minutes of Dior fabulosity, again directed by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Another signature dreamy escapade, this time we see Daria Strokus switch between nude undergarments and powerful-structured Raf Simons designed Dior wears in one second flat, whilst frolicking down the corridors of Versailles to the soundtrack of Depeche Mode’s ‘Strangelove’. Later exploring the masterfully designed gardens, Strokus is joined by two other models – Kaitlin Aas and Fei Fei Sun, who join her in the vast landscaped gardens. The film leaves us with an all-branded CD floral garland before closing the door on Versailles. We have no doubt we will meet again.

Sister Jane launch their Candy Canyon collection with an immersive fashion film, streaming today, exclusively on Wonderland

To launch their new Candy Canyon collection, Sister Jane have teamed up with Florence + The Machine’s stylist Aldene Johnson, to create a sensory experience through the medium of film. Taking us on a road trip through the United States of America, the video showcases the collection inspired by a desert road trip – think care free festival classics, fringed suede and folk inspired prints. We caught up with Creative Director Aldene Johnson to talk about the campaign video, streaming today exclusively on Wonderland.

What was the inspiration behind creating the Candy Canyon video?

The idea of the campaign is about taking a journey, a road trip from one epic location to the next. We shot it over three days travelling through California, Arizona and Utah, stopping at  a series of amazing locations – Antelope Valley Poppy Field and Lava Field California, Antelope Canyon, Horse Shoe Bend and Route 66 Arizona, Great Salt Lake Desert, and Las Vegas Nevada – along the way.

What about the narrative behind it?

Amanda Charchain who shot both the campaign images and the film was feeling inspired by the historic spiritual cults of L.A.. With the idea of a road trip in mind, we loved the narrative of our girl rejecting those ideals and going out on her own, to find her own version of what the world means.

Is this what were you’re trying to evoke through the video?

Yes. A realisation of some kind. A sense of liberation.

How do the clothes in the collection relate to the video?

I think the video not only relates to this collection but more to the essence of the Sister Jane brand as a whole. Its about having both a positive and adventurous spirit.

Kenzo have collaborated with Los Angeles filmmaker Kahlil Joseph on a short film ‘Dawn In Luxor’

Kenzo has tapped Kahlil Joseph – the director behind Flying Lotus collaboration Until The Quiet Comes – to create a surreal and uplifting short film in line with the No Fish No Nothing theme that anchored their Spring/Summer 2014 ready-to-wear collection.

Kenzo presented us with a fusion of classic tailoring and Los Angeles beachwear on the Spring/Summer catwalks. But a hidden message lay among the embroidered crop tops, split midi skirts and plastic-coated maxi dresses. The now-iconic melted fish prints and slogan sweaters were designed to reflect on overfishing in already-crowded marine territories, with Creative Directors Carol Lim and Humberto Leon wanting to emphasise the need for public intervention and, essentially, draw attention to this increasing conservation problem.

The new Dawn In Luxor film continues the juxtaposition of beauty and flawed reality that the collection began by offering viewers a fragmented view of Los Angeles. Routine imagery such as a woman looking out towards the sea or a man ordering fish in a restaurant (to get the reply “no fish”) are shown alongside naively fantastical sequences of a boy paying homage to a beached dolphin.

The world through Kahlil Joseph’s lens appears beautiful, yet paradoxical. Like Kenzo’s collection, Dawn In Luxor encapsulates California in all its variety; drawing on Lim and Leon’s teenage years, where otherworldly elements combine with an emotional narrative to celebrate the recognition of difference and ability for change.

Phoebe Lettice X Illustrated People

Born from a love of Japanese culture, ’90s nostalgia and androgynous shapes, photographer, stylist and designer Phoebe Lettice, has collaborated with East London clothing brand Illustrated People to create a most covetable collection of womens street wear.

Seeing the entire process through from start to finish, Phoebe not only designed the collection but also styled, photographed and cast the campaign herself. “It has been my life for the last six months,” says Phoebe. “But the core two months leading up to the campaign, I was prepping like mad, calling things in way in advance! I had a huge team working on it, so trying to nail this all in one day with three models and four hair stylists was nuts.”

Launching exclusively on Wonderland today, we see the campaign video that features the twenty-two piece collection in all its pastel-punk, platform-booted, crop top suited glory. Think sporty silhouettes, eyeball motifs, cartoon dinosaurs and models with badass braids and chola curls. We caught up with Phoebe to hear about the collection first hand…

So what was the initial starting point for the collaboration?

It’s a Japanese Kawaii based theme. I’ve always loved Japan and Harajuku girls, especially when Gwen Steffani brought out L.A.M.B. For me, that was amazing so it stuck with me. It’s always been a topic I’ve wanted to pursue, but I had never had the right opportunity or output, so when I had the chance to do this with Illustrated People I already knew what I wanted to do before they offered me a design role.

So has Illustrated People always been a brand close to your heart?

Yeah I would say so, I came across them a while back when I was looking for interesting things to wear and they had some really funny slogan t-shirts. I had borrowed things off them for shoots too so I’ve always had a nice relationship with them and I respect them. They are such a small team. It’s a great place to be.

Screen Shot 2014-05-16 at 12.57.31

What about the collection, what shapes can we expect to see?

Well I went in knowing the theme but I also knew the shape I wanted to create. Basketball style shorts and hip hop style t-shirt’s for girls. It was something that I was looking for all last summer. I managed to find a pair from Londsdale and a pair from Sandro and I wore them all summer with my boyfriend’s t-shirts, but I could never find ones with garish prints or any matching sets. So that was what I wanted to do.

There’s a dress, some mini-skirts and then we have the polo crops. They’re inspired by the opening scene in Bully, the one where she’s wearing this really high cropped polo top and her tits are hanging out underneath. That was exactly what I wanted to do! Obviously you can’t show that in lookbooks, but that was the idea. A shorter style crop with the under-boob. I love that.

Sounds amazing! Lastly, if you could dress someone in this collection, alive or dead, who would it be?

For me it has to be someone badass, in the non cringe-iest way, a really strong girl. I was casting on a budget, it wasn’t like I could pick someone and just fly them over. So I wanted attitude, someone who was hot but looked like they could kick the shit out of you as well. I guess someone like Jordan Dunn, Iggy Azelia, Angel Haze. Just really tough girls. Some of the pieces are so pastel-y and girly, so I like paring them with a strong girl.

The collection will be available to buy from IllustratedPeople.com from 26th May 2014.

Thailand born and bred, jewellery designer O Thongthai makes her fashion week debut with her AW14 collection “original gangster”, a collection inspired by the energy and values of youth and rebellion. Inspired by Thongthai’s memories of her own youth and childhood, the pieces are contemporary but also reference the past, layered with significance. Her grandfather taught her about life and it’s infinite variety and this has become a key theme within this season’s collection. The collection focuses on finding beauty and pleasure amongst deterioration, the derelict and that which is past its prime.

The brand was launched after Thongthai graduated from Central Saint Martin’s and last London Fashion Week saw her debut her collection, a range of rings, cuffs and earrings designed and made in Thailand. Each piece is hand-crafted from wax before being re-cast in brass and plated in Rose Gold, Silver, Gold, Black Ruthenium and Silver925.

Watch the accompanying fashion film ‘Ride or Die’ below!
