Angelina Jolie proves her worth as a political activist at this month’s End Sexual Violence in Conflict summitAngelina Jolie

Self-admittedly an unlikely duo, William Hague and Angelina Jolie took to the stage at the End Sexual Violence in Conflict global summit this June to introduce In the Land of Blood and Honey, Jolie’s directorial debut. Wonderland takes a pew.

The Foreign Secretary and Hollywood superstar united during a four-day summit at ExCel London in aid of creating irreversible momentum against sexual violence in conflict. Angelina Jolie’s gripping and tormented tale of a love story between a Serbian soldier and a Bosnian held captive in the camp he oversees illustrated perfectly the role of sexual violence as power play at war. Written, directed and co-produced by Jolie, an audience left the screening bowled over by her capabilities both behind the camera and as a political activist. As intended, we were left in her own words: “More thoughtful towards and understanding of what’s happening in Bosnia”.

Indeed, this is a lady who gets the job done, bringing a wealth of knowledge and great influence to her role as Special Envoy for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Jolie could be seen gliding with an undeniable grace throughout the exhibition which was part of 175 public events in London, at times accompanied by doting hubby, Brad Pitt. A far cry from your average celebrity public appearance, the summit is the result of two years of hard graft and consequently the largest ever of it’s kind.

Beyoncé, pregnancé? /2013/05/15/beyonce-pregnance/ Wed, 15 May 2013 10:09:01 +0000 http://www.wonderlandmagazine.com/?p=18938 In this week’s Linkbait news round-up, we ask all the important questions. In this week’s Linkbait news round-up, we ask all the important questions.

Beyonce pregnant Blue Ivy

IS SHE? ISN’T SHE? IS SHE? ISN’T SHE?

Is Beyoncé pregnant for the second time? Nobody knows. What we do know: she cancelled a show in Belgium due to “dehydration” and “exhaustion”. Somewhere, Kim Kardashian is very, very worried that she’s going to get upstaged. [USA Today]

M&S autumn/winter womenswear

HIGH STREET COMEBACK OF THE WEEK

M&S reported 3.8% decline in clothes sales this quarter, but at least its womenswear team is trying to stage a bold comeback for autumn/winter. The tactic? Lots of coats. Lisa Armstrong previews the new collection. [The Telegraph]

ANGELINA JOLIE OFFICIALLY BECOMES BETTER THAN YOU

The actress revealed she opted for a double mastectomy to reduce her risk of breast cancer. Brad Pitt called her “absolutely heroic”. Suddenly, all those ‘Brad/Jen/Angie’ tabloid covers seem a little insignificant now, huh? [New York Times]

Steve Jobs

WANT TO BECOME THE STEVE JOBS OF BRITISH FASHION?

The UK government is pumping £100,000 prize money into a fashion and tech start-up competition. Got an idea? The contest closes in June and the prize will be split between four companies with the most innovative ieas. [WSJ]

Nina Ricci and Karl Lagerfeld Kate Middleton design

LET’S FACE IT, SHE’LL PROBABLY JUST WEAR BODEN

Karl Lagerfeld, Nina Ricci and Vera Wang were among the designers tasked with imagining a dress for Kate Middleton, who is definitely pregnancé. We’re a fan of Lagerfeld’s rack-on-show design – don’t think the Queen would be happy, though. [WWD]

Rihanna x River Island

WANT TO DRESS LIKE A NON-PREGNANT CELEB? YOU’RE IN LUCK

If you like tie-dye, crochet and crop tops, you’ll probably love Rihanna’s second collection for River Island. If you don’t, we can’t really help you out there. [Fashionista]

This post is brought to you by the most famous baby bump in the world (sorry, Kate)

In a move that had nothing to do with a £1m deal with Channel 4, Gordon Ramsay went to Brixton Prison to selflessly rehabilitate British convicts through the power of gourmet cuisine. So in honour of last night’s documentary ‘Gordon Behind Bars‘, Wonderland takes a look at the best and worst celeb attempts to play Jesus.

THE BEST:

(1) Angelina Jolie

Ange, we forgive you for stealing Brad. Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, campaigning to ban landmines – was Jen ever this saintly?

(2) Kevin Costner

This Robin Hood threw £13.5 million of his own money at solving the oil spill crisis in Mexico, funding scientists to create filtering machines that could separate the oil from the water.

(3) Oprah

The talkshow queen built the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls outside of Johannesburg, aimed at educating poor South Africans. It even has its own yoga studio. Never let it be said Oprah doesn’t believe in spoiling the kids.

WORST:

(1) Tom Cruise

This Scientologist shows us just how the worshipped worship: by spending huge amounts of money, rubbing it in the public’s face and expecting to be told how great he is for doing it.

(2) Bono

Dear Bono: leave the preaching to the Archbishop of Canterbury. And for god’s sake, next time choose a better opening hymn.

(3) Jamie Oliver

Back in 2010, the cheery celebu-chef was moved to tears over America’s most obese city resisting his onslaught of healthy food. If ‘crying over fat people’ was an Olympic category, Jamie Oliver would win gold, silver and bronze.
