To Paris with love! Rose Gray gives Wonderland a glimpse inside the whimsical fantasy and flirtations of her new Camille Summers Valli-directed video for “I Don’t Speak French”.
Back in January, Rose Gray dropped one of the best debut albums of the year in Louder, Please, a record that solidified her seat on the dance pop table and has created a ripple effect of success for the Londoner. For some ten months, the impact still reverberates.
On 24th October, Gray shared a deluxe edition of the album. Entitled A Little Louder, Please, the record augments its sleek hedonism and vibrant musicianship, enlisting an array of heavy hitters to join in the fun – from JADE to Melanie C, Shygirl to LUXE.
She’s now built out the world of the project, sharing a new visual for LP extra “I Don’t Speak French”. Directed by Camille Summers Valli and starring Emily In Paris heartthrob Lucas Bravo, the video is better experienced than described, bustling with drama, landmarks and sensuality – what more could you ask for?
“I’ve always been in love with Paris,” Rose says. “The fantasy, the flirtation, the late nights. I wrote this song about meeting someone at a hotel bar and not speaking the same language but still saying everything. Sonically, it’s a playful new space for me. I slept on this song for years but with the deluxe I wanted to bring her into the light. It’s always been my friend’s favourite. I love love this song and am so excited it’s coming out with the deluxe eeeek!!”
Camille adds: “When Rose reached out with this track, it came at a time where I wanted to make something fun. I wanted the process to be fun, the concept to be wild, silly, not so serious. ‘I don’t speak French’ felt like the perfect fit for a British cliche of Frenchness in the city of love, manipulating stereotypes to create something playful and witty. Being French myself, I was really able to lean into the mockery of it – and hopefully give the French something to laugh at themselves about.”
