Jordan Mackampa’s latest single, “BLACCJACK THE MAC,” is a sensational preview of what’s to come from his upcoming album, Welcome Home, Kid!, out this Friday. Bringing a fusion of funk and disco influences, he inaugurates a new chapter in his artistry with a track that exudes confidence and charisma — making it the perfect anthem for those moments when you’re feeling your best and setting the tone for the summer ahead of us. The track is a collaboration with the Grammy Award-winning duo, The Orphanage, which adds an extra layer of grandiosity and boldness to its sonic experience.
Throughout the album, Jordan showcases his versatility and authenticity, drawing on influences from R&B, soul, funk, and gospel, inviting listeners on an introspective journey of self-discovery and growth. As he embarks on his UK and Europe headline tour, including a sold-out show at London’s iconic KOKO, Wonderland had the honour of sitting down with the star to discuss his new single, his forthcoming album, and exciting future plans. Hey Jordan! How’s your start to 2024 been?
Busy! #TourdanMackampa prep is well underway and the album’s around the corner so I’m trying my best to stay on top of things.
Going back to the beginning, when did you first start creating music?
Professionally since 2016, but really & truly I was born and raised into it.
How would you describe your sound today?
A fusion baby of Miguel, Jazmine Sullivan, Silk Sonic and Isaiah Rashad.
How are you feeling about the release of “BLACCJACK THE MAC”?
I’m loving the response it’s been getting so far, it was one of my favourites to create — I’ve only just opened the box to what’s possible in terms of this sound specifically.
Talk us through the track! What does it say?
The track essentially says to walk in your purpose, with so much unfuckw*thable confidence that no one can shake you off your path, it just so happens to be a banger too.
How did your time in LA impact your songwriting and the creation of the single?
That stereotype of everything being so chill/ laid back is legit, I was able to take myself less seriously while also creating some of the best music I’ve ever made.
What was the collaboration process like with The Orphanage?
Godlike. What we achieved in a month some people couldn’t do in 9, which is testament to how great they are at their craft & the trust they instilled in me, to meet them where they’ve been so comfortability all this time.
Does it give us a taste of what to expect from the forthcoming album, Welcome Home, Kid!?
Absolutely, I honestly feel like my favourite tracks off the record are the ones which weren’t the singles — for me they fill in the gaps in the storytelling of the album.
Speaking of the album, can you tell us a bit about the themes it explores and what you hope to say with the project?
There are 3 themes explored on this record; Growth, Love, and Acceptance. I’ve been writing some of these songs since 2019, when I was much younger and still finding my feet through life. I’m almost 30 now with a better understanding of myself as an artist, and a human being. Everything you’ll hear on this album is exactly what I meant to say.
Aside from the release, what are you most looking forward to in the year ahead?
Seeing where I’ll be in a year from now and what I’ve learnt in the time that’s passed.
