When it comes to UK rap legacy, few names hold more weight than that of Dizzie Rascal. Since changing the whole scene’s landscape with his classic debut Boy In Da Corner, he’s released an array of projects of differing quality and sound, until now finding himself in his most dance-heavy approach with his eight LP, Don’t Take It Personal.

Rascal’s showmanship is on full show across the album’s 16 tracks, with boisterous bars and clubby production presented throughout much of the body of work. It brings with it a cohesiveness but also arguably feels somewhat derivative by the time tracks like “Switch and Explode” and “Jerk and Jollof” come around. The afrobeat-leaning “Roll Wit Me” and subtler “Tell Me About It” are welcomed inclusions, bringing some sonic diversity to proceedings.

The MC recruits friends old and new for an electric plethora of featured turn, from legends like D Double E and JME to new wave favourites Not3s and Backroad Gee. The latter – as we’ve come to expect from him – brings fantastic energy on both of his appearances, combining well with Dizzie to bring some much needed edge to the track-list.

It doesn’t break any new boundaries, but Don’t Take It Personal is a solid addition to Dizzie’s impressive discography, flaunting his artistic progression.
