Rising indie band Cassia have been cementing their place in the alternative sphere for some years now, dating back to their ’17 hit debut single, “100 Times Over”. Fresh from last year’s impressive sophomore LP, Why You Lacking Energy, and an array of tour dates supporting Bastille, the band now return with a confident cut ushering in their next artistic chapter in the form of “whatstheuse”.

Following “High Tones” from earlier this year, this new cut sees the band at their most potent and provoking. An instrumental backdrop, consisting of a hazy looped piano, sharp percussion and stripped back production, lays a nostalgic foundation for frontman Rob Ellis to sprawl a tale of moving on from the past and the intricacies of life moving forward.

On the new single, Ellis reveals, “This song is about willingly coming to terms with a chapter of life that has come to a natural end then suddenly being thrust straight into a completely new and vulnerable beginning. I think that humans tend to not deal very well with being in this position, so that thought was always in the back of my mind when writing the lyrics for this tune. The song was one of the last songs I wrote on a trip over to Berlin and I didn’t really think that I had enough energy in me to get something written. I was really feeling the pressure and I knew I had to get myself in the zone and make something new. The track was written with a friend of mine who was visiting Berlin and he had this piano loop prepared- we built the track around that loop and it just pieced together seamlessly.”

A subtly powerful offering, the track flaunts the band’s emotional resonance and eclectic musical nature, leaving us intrigued to hear what’s next from the three-piece.
