J. Hoard is a singer songwriter etching his name into the history books. The diverse approach and skill set of the artist has meant that he has achieved success across an array of different genres, making waves ini the jazz, rock, soul and electronic scenes. As a songwriter, the artist has seen fruitful collaborations work Black Coffee on the 2022 Grammy-winning album Subconsciously, and with Chance the Rapper on the Grammy-winning Colouring Book back in 2017.
On top of his work with some of the biggest artists in the world, Hoard is also an established and accomplished solo artist. He has just returned with a vibrant new live offering, entitled “Devil Is a Liar”, a further implementation of his sonic manifesto. Showcasing a unique and versatile vocal prowess, J. builds a soundscape with his voice alone, layering and looping, with sparse percussion driving the instrumental forward. There is a focused ambience to the tone of the song, with the singer’s vocal and songwriting taking centre stage, in what is a stunning and textured composition.
“This loop resulted from the many (virtual) conversations I had with a group of musicians in May 2020. We were asking: when and how do we speak up as artists in an ever-changing, ever-weirding industry? I concluded the devil is a liar. Then, and now, ‘devil’ refers to anything that harms one’s sense of place, sense of belonging and sense of self. The main antidote is to find peace of mind – find one’s centre.”
