NEW NOISE: ALICE D

We sit with the artist to discuss the making of “Passion”, her love of dance and where she’ll be taking her artistry next.

Dipping her toes into the pools of contemporary pop, soul and R&B, Alice D has fashioned herself as somewhat of a shapeshifter — dancing across genres with her sensual vocals, hip-swaying melodies and intoxicating performances. Releasing her new song “Passion”, Alice D continues to combine authentic tunes with danceable beats — creating an effort that is the ultimate sweet spot between blissful escapism and heated ardour.

Dropped beside an enchanting music video, Alice D is seen grooving to her own drum-speckled melody, while the video cuts to a couple dancing together. Speaking of the track and visual, Alice explains, “I’ve loved those sounds for such a long time, and to have the freedom to experiment then finally find a way of incorporating them into my own work has really cemented my sound. I’m so excited to finally release ‘Passion’. I had the idea of creating a video at sunset, with the use of haze and the warm lighting we were able to replicate a hot summer’s evening. Having cutaways of the dancers and close-ups of movement heightened this sense of a passionate love affair. Together with the isolated shots of myself, this exaggerated this sense of longing for that person.”

To celebrate the release, we sat with the artist to discuss the making of “Passion”, the creative process behind its visual and where she’ll be taking her artistry next. To watch the music video and to read the full interview now, scroll below…

Hey Alice, how are you doing?
Hey Wonderland, I’m very well thank you- been working hard this past year on new music!

Let’s start at the very beginning, how did you first get into music?
I grew up surrounded by music, both my parents are performers and some of my earliest memories are of them rehearsing dance routines in our living room or writing songs at our kitchen table. I used to play on the keyboard in our little studio room and wrote my first song with my dad at age 11 – I remember loving the process of putting pen to paper and recording on a mic. From then onwards I was in school musicals, choirs and jazz concerts. The first time I thought I wanted to take music and singing seriously was when I started working with producer/artist Oscar Scheller (Mabel, Big Piig, Ashnikko). We wrote a couple of songs in his bedroom when we were both starting out and in 2018 he produced my debut EP “Narcissus.” I’ve been independently releasing music ever since.

Your music dances across multiple genres, but if you had to describe it with one word, what would it be?
Authentic.

Who would you say inspires you?
My mum, she’s the strongest woman and my biggest support. My rock!

Congratulations on the release of “Passion”! What was your main goal when coining this track?
Thank you so much! “Passion” is the last track on my upcoming EP and was also the last track I wrote. Everything I set out to do with this song I feel like I achieved, I wanted the intro to be long and dramatic to round off the EP and to produce a sensual track with Afro-Latin elements. Adding Bella Band’s flute (I love the flute) was the last thing we did and was the icing on the cake! I’m really happy with the way it all came together.

Who did you first play it to? What was their reaction?
I always send my music after a recording session to my mum, dad and boyfriend — they’re my biggest fans but will also be honest if they think something isn’t quite right. They loved it immediately, thankfully!

And talk us through the creative process behind the music video!
I co-produced the music video with the director, Henry Croston and styled it myself. We had a relatively small team on set but it was such a great vibe. From the start I knew I wanted to shoot the video at sunset and both Henry & Marcus (DOP) were able to replicate it by using warm lighting and haze to create a sense of warmth. I also knew I wanted to have two dancers dancing “Sensual Bachata” a style of dance that originates from Cádiz in Spain. I sourced the dancers from my mum’s friend and choreographer Paul Robert’s who put me in touch with the Performers College and both their students Olivia and Rhys came up with such a brilliant routine. Having cutaways and closeups of their movements heightened this sense of a passionate love affair, while I was solitary longing for that person and passion. The whole video has a dark sensual feel to it which was exactly the intention.

If you weren’t doing music, what would you be doing?
Something in fashion, I love creatively directing my own shoots and videos, organising and styling it all.

And what’s one thing you like to do for fun when you’re not working?
Dance!

Finally, where do you see yourself taking your artistry next?
Experimenting further and discovering more music. I’d love to write an album and start piecing together a proper show with a live band and amazing visuals.
