NEW NOISE: JACKSON MICO MILAS

The artist teases the release of his new album, Blu Terra, with the drop of his brand new single.

Sweet, tender and soulful: that’s what makes the magic of Jackson Mico Milas’ latest single, “Lost In Seasons”. Ethereal yet emotional, vulnerable yet lively, “Lost In Seasons” effortlessly depicts Jackson’s innate ability to tickle our tear ducts while plucking his guitar strings.

So, what makes “Lost In Seasons” so mesmerising? In the spirit of its namesake, the track catapults listeners through a journey of discovery — with a melody that rises and settles in the same manner with which the year’s seasons melt into one another. Hacked from his forthcoming album, Blu Terra, “Lost In Seasons” sets a sizeable precedent that Jackson Mico Milas is ready to get us all in our feels — and we are more than ready.

Ahead of the album drop in November, we sat down with Jackson to discuss everything from his year so far to his most exciting projects to come. To stream “Lost In Seasons” and to read the full interview, head below…

Hey Jackson! How are you doing today?
Wonderful, thank you! It’s a beautiful overcast day in the Great British summer.

And what has this year been like so far? Do you have any highlights?
Yesterday I dropped in to see some friends at Motorbass, which was Philippe Zdars studio. That was pretty incredible to see where all those Phoenix records were made. Seeing people I haven’t seen in a long time is the most meaningful aspect of the year so far. And Dark Mofo festival in Tasmania.

So let’s start at the very beginning. How did you first get into music?
I had a job at a recording studio as an assistant making coffees when I was 18. I started writing very private songs on the guitar then. Some older mentors around me really encouraged me to keep writing and developing those songs, and that became High Highs, my first band. I was relentlessly bashing away on a small guitar from age four. Bless my parents for putting up with that for the first few years.

And how did you discover your sound? Did it come naturally or did you experiment?
Using my voice is something I find pretty confronting and scary, so I guess I walk towards that fear and try to embrace it. Somewhere in there, I assemble simple instrumentation around that.

Do you ever see yourself moving away from acoustic/alt-folk melodies?
I am completely open. Just yesterday in the studio I was thinking about how nice it would be to have a project where I’m free from the responsibility of singing and doing something more beat driven.

Congratulations on the release of “Lost in Seasons”! What was the one thing you wanted to accomplish when writing this particular track?
Thank you! The song came out of thinking about how time has flowed through these last few years with the pandemic. Time became convoluted, and I wanted to reflect that back somehow. In terms of the musical arrangement, I just wanted to make it as direct as possible. At one point it had a full band arrangement, but I ended up stripping it way back. The guitar part feels great to play, it’s got an interesting tuning and I could play it all day!

Who did you first play it to? What was the reception like?
I sent it to one of my best friends Adam who lives in Sweden and he really liked the lyrics in the chorus. That conversation helped me proceed with confidence.

The single is hacked from your debut album, Blu Terra, what was your mindset going into the making of it?
Entirely audio, no software instruments. This turned out to be a really cool restriction for making an album. I love thinking about restrictions at the beginning of a new project.

And how are you feeling now it is finally done?
I would say a mixture of happiness and acute anxiety.

What made you decide that now was the time to unveil your work to the world?
Making it was a gradual process, I was adding to it in between other projects. I am lucky that the stars aligned, and I’ve got a great team around me who are supportive AF.

And where do you see yourself taking your artistry next? What’s in store for you in the near future?
I’ve got some songs I’m really happy with for the next record. I’m doing a TV series for Sky Atlantic. Never stopping basically.
