When it comes to an album introduction, nothing causes quite the impact like a stellar single drop, and HVOB knows this. Introducing the world to the sweet sounds of their album, TOO, they offer electric vibes and uplifting production on their newest release, “Eyes Alive”.

When discussing their latest project as a whole, the duo explained, “TOO is our harshest and softest album to date. In terms of sound, we wanted to explore a space of extremes between departure and retreat, between determination and self-doubt. TOO is dedicated to the state of mind of our search for inner and outer belonging. The album captures a life in the dichotomy of one’s own and the expectations of others, in the feeling of not living up to these expectations, in renewed attempts to free oneself from these expectations.”

Ahead of the release of “Eyes Alive”, the duo got candid with Wonderland about how this album is different from the ones that have come before and their affinity for indie music. Head below to enjoy our interview with HVOB…

Hey guys, how are you? How has this past year been?
COVID was like a full stop. Our last few years were extremely high-paced. On the one hand, incredibly intense, an adventure. But on the other hand, of course, we were permanently over the limit in terms of physical and mental stress. It forced us into a break that we probably wouldn’t have taken otherwise. We learned to take breaks last year.

The pandemic affected everyone! Did it affect your creativity in any way?
We had time to fully concentrate on our music which was a totally new situation, as we were writing music in between concerts. But it didn’t affect the creative process. We just had time.

How did you guys meet, what sparked the interest?
We met at a very young age, and we just clicked musically. Paul and I realised early on that we are like two pieces of a puzzle that belonged together. We complement each other, and each of us can do things well that the other may not be able to.

And you both have different creative inspirations, how did you combine them?
We’ve both always listened to a lot of indie music; we both like bands such as Radiohead or The Notwist. Paul definitely has stronger roots in electronic music, but we have always tried to discover our own sonic worlds.

And now you’re about to share your new album, talk us through your mindset approaching this?
TOO is our harshest and softest album to date. In terms of sound, we wanted to explore a space of extremes between departure and retreat, between determination and self-doubt. TOO is dedicated to the state of mind of our search for inner and outer belonging. The album captures a life in the dichotomy of one’s own and the expectations of others, in the feeling of not living up to these expectations, in renewed attempts to free oneself from these expectations.

You guys have had five studio albums, which one has meant the most to you?
Unfortunately, I can’t answer that, it would be like having to choose a favourite child!

What are you most looking forward to this year, what are you excited for?
We’re just happy to be able to tour again and release our new album. The tour starts in April and we will present our new album on all continents. Like everyone else, we just want a bit of normality again.
