The rumours are true, Lorde’s comeback single “Solar Power” is the song of the summer.
The sun might’ve decided to play coy after this week’s colossal heatwave, but not to worry, our favourite New Zealand musical powerhouse is on a mission to bring it back with her brand new summer anthem, “Solar Power”.
Word spread like wildfire regarding our Lorde and saviour’s return this week, with the resulting memes making us giggle each and every day. Now the single is finally here, and let us tell you, she put her heart, soul and all the good vibes she could muster into this one. The Jack Antonoff-produced masterpiece starts with calm, plucky acoustics that nestle at the feet of the singer’s signature rasp as she takes us on a tour of the island paradise she’s currently residing in – we hope it’s on the green travel list!
As the first taste of her third studio album, the singer took to her famed newsletter to share a long overdue update with her loyal following as to what else is in store for the year ahead. “The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalising the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors,” she shares. “In times of heartache, grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learnt to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through.”
Clad in a sunray yellow two-piece, Lorde sings of chucking her cellular device in the water and distancing herself from the craziness of reality to dwell in the tropical sun with Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo. After finishing up an impromptu dance routine, she launches into a final, dreamy chorus that just consists of the word “Summer”, over and over again. The whole thing looks exactly like The Beach, without all the grizzly deaths and scary power playing at the hands of Tilda Swinton. I mean, her Islandmates are literally carrying her around the gaff on a chair with a dainty parasol, if this isn’t the life, we don’t know what is…
I guess the song of the summer is officially here.
