Bronx-born rapper ImJaeHall is pretty much synonymous with bassy hip-hop at this point, renowned for spitting line after line of poetic bliss – on topics from heartbreaking to healing – like it was second nature to him. Having burst onto the scene with his stirring debut album, Wish We Felt Nothing, back in 2017, Hall has spent the last few years playing the long game, there’s no need rush greatness, after all. His soothing, slow-mo beats do all the talking, and on his latest track “Selfish”, he goes deeper than ever before.

“‘Selfish’ was recorded after a 3-hour phone conversation with a woman I was dating,” Hall explains of the song’s origins. “The word that we constantly used to describe me was “selfish”. Instead of denying the allegation, I started to understand the “why” and agreed…”

“Would you believe me if I told you I don’t wanna be selfish?” Hall asks on the track, addressing everyone and no one at the same time. As a self-acceptance song, Hall penned this hit to force the listener and himself to come to terms with our inner toxicity. We all have that streak in us, it makes us who we are, but to flat out deny it… not on his watch. Over peppy 808’s that rumble and echo, Hall digs deep, baring his soul in the hopes it’ll help just one of us make better decisions, forming a pretty decent tune in the process.
