Since 1962 now, there’s nothing that quite signals the start of summer so abruptly as the unmistakable scent of suncream and digging out your ye olde faithful Havaianas flip flop.

A perennial footwear fave year-in, year-out due to the signature grainy rubber soles and vibrant colours, a lesser-known aspect of the Brazilian label has been their ongoing dedication to the conservation of environmental diversity, led by their long-term partnership with IPÊ (Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas, aka Institute for Ecological Research).

Havaianas’ dreamy IPÊ collection has been giving 7% of net sales to the institute since 2004, funding its work protecting flora and fauna, as well as the research of vulnerable and endangered species, and restoration of landscapes in the Atlantic forest, the Amazon jungle and Pantanal region.

And this year, the label have teamed up with Sao Paulo street artist Arlin Graff for three limited edition IPÊ flip flop designs, donating profits back to the Amazonian rainforest.

Think your summer staples, but emblazoned with images of Brazilian wildlife: animals usually removed from their natural habitats to be sold as pets or for their fur. The soles of each pair will also include the scientific names of the animals, as well as info about their habitat.

To even further highlight the cause, Graff will be taking to Redchurch Street in London’s Shoreditch from 15 – 23 July, spray-painting an entire wall of a building to celebrate his work with Havaianas. For around a decade now, Graff has been making waves with his groundbreaking large scale creations around the world. This summer, the artist crafted a similar mural in Lisbon to raise awareness of the collaboration.
