With a kaleidoscope of prints, Zimmermann returns to New York with a spellbinding collection of colour.

Mirror Mirror

This season’s collection is aptly named “Mirror Mirror”, not only to optimise the small embellished mirrors that caught light on the runway, but also to connect glistening metallic looks that reflected colour and luminosity into this season’s mix. Inspired by the prints and textures of India, the inclusion of small, effective reflecting pieces of glass that decorate long and flowing dresses, blouses and skirts, invite the image of cultural Indian dress and wall tapestries. Zimmermann’s exotic twist this season is topped off with prints reminiscent of flowers and plants of the jungle that weave in and out of the collection, certainly paying homage to a world away from New York City.

Optimum Oz

Despite Creative Director Nicky Zimmermann’s South Asian references, the labels’s Australian roots have not gone unnoticed. Known for its swimwear, this brand is also known for it’s typically Australian use of colour and print, and ultimately this season’s concoction is hypnotic. From warm fuchsia and salmons to pale blues (that despite their cool hues still suggest a tropical lagoon), the Zimmermann answer to Autumn/Winter is a refreshing middle finger to sub-zero temperatures.

Boho Spirit

It’s near impossible to miss the bohemian veins that pump a sense of loose freedom throughout this collection. Bell sleeves, long flowing skirts, tassels, drop hem waists and gaping plunge necks alongside colourful printed patterns all express the nomadic spirit that Zimmermann itself is an example of. On a side note, aline skirts and the pale printed stockings can easily make you reminisce of a different flavour of the sixties, but ultimately it all echoes the same ethos: empowered femininity and a confident, roaming freedom.

Airy and iridescent with codes of elegance and seduction, we take a look at the SS15 Zimmermann reinvented gypsy girl 25_ON_0655

First impressions

Airy and iridescent. Layers of lace and satin.  Seductive.  Elegant.

Then – those shoes.  Lest we get hung up on ‘elegance,’ newcomer Nicky Zimmermann cues us into something more, something cooler, with patent-leather mules – black and bordeaux, emblazoned like the back of a tarot card with a crescent moon emblem.  Then there are those silver hoop earrings, another hint – turns out, Zimmermann’s graceful SS15 girl has a bit of gypsy blood in her.

Black magic woman

The gypsy turns up reinvented in sheer, puffed sleeves, and gathered marbleised skirts, yet photographs do this collection no justice.  These clothes were meant to move.  With the exception of a few (very elegant) bodysuits – all even these had fluttering frills – it would be impossible to find a look that didn’t yield a highly satisfying bounce with every step.

Asymmetrical hemlines and layered froth made for a rippling of confectionary fabrics, and even stiff-looking pleats had the gift of magic.

‘Disheveled Plus’

Consider Banal Plus, W‘s recent interpretation of the sweats-and-sneakers “normcore” trend as the standard W aesthetic, paired with Nike socks and sandals: that is, everything how it should be, with the one with one thing (slightly) off.

Although here was no Banal, there was certainly that ‘one thing off.’  There was the glittering button-down, tucked in with the buttons off-centre; the open, belted trench coat, rakishly spilt over an exposed shoulder; the cinched lace dress, with the fabric bunched up droopily over the waistline – a hint of dishevelment in every look.

It was the effect of a perfect dress, with a fallen spaghetti strap.  It was ‘Disheveled Plus.’
