Portsmouth singer-songwriter Jerry Williams started penning lyrics at the age of 12. “I remember singing a few songs to my mum and her saying, ‘maybe you’re not much of a singer, maybe you should stick to the songwriting’,” Williams quips. “I was like ‘yeah, okay’, but I just kept working on it. I’m glad she was honest, because it just drove me harder.”

Even as pre-teen, she was picking through childhood heroes for inspiration: Roald Dahl and other children’s novelists. Nowadays, her list of influences reads like a Zane Lowe playlist: Coldplay, David Gray and Johnny Cash.

Williams finds writing songs in the bathroom effective (“it’s really weird”) – but staring
deeply into the mirror is what she does best, metaphorically speaking anyway. Using coming- of-age issues as subject matter – “boys, friends and the things they talk about” – Williams’ tracks are an honest insight into the 19 year-old’s mind. Aside from releasing her four-track debut EP “Cold Beer” last month, this summer Williams has been racking up studio time with the likes

of Whinnie Williams and Newton Faulkner. “I couldn’t believe I was sitting round Newton’s table, having a cup of tea with him and his brother. I was just like, ‘oh my god, what’s going on?’”

Last year, a band of almost-brothers (and three nearly-sisters) came together to form fiercely anonymous French fashion brand, Vetements. Group founder Demna Gvasalia and Vetements’ remaining six all had one thing in common before starting the project: they worked, contractually, for someone else. Houses like Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga and Margiela were where the Vetements crowd started out. Initiated as a weekend project to dress the founders’ girlfriends, the brand evolved into a cult buy. Like a true guerrilla collective, their debut collection was stitched together in Gvasalia’s living room, the AW15 show was held in notorious Parisian gay club Le Depot, and the models were Facebook-cast.

“It’s more real, more honest and believable and the people who look at what we are doing know and understand [this]. We would go to weird parties in Paris and take photos of weird girls with bad attitudes, and recruit that way too. Not pretty or girly, but boyish and real. And they became part of our gang. We will continue to do that. What we do is real. They become our friends after the casting. They come hang out and stay in our studio drinking wine and smoking cigarettes.”

Nadia Lee Cohen and Millicent Hailes met at college at the age of 15 and started taking photographs of each other. For Hailes, it was a way to realise the characters in her head and to guise herself as someone different, whilst for Cohen it was a reaction to the mundanity of everyday life. “Nadia Lee and I used to photograph each other in strange outfits, in weird places,” recalls Hailes. “It progressed from there to what it is now. We’re still wearing strange outfits in weird places, just 10 years on.”

These days their strange outfits range from leopard print triangle bikinis twinned with cowboy hats and logo t-shirts worn with soda-can headwear, to American flag print leotards and straight-up, full-frontal nudity. “I remember us having some sort of epiphany, flicking through someone’s holiday photos that looked as though they were downloaded from Photobucket and saying to each other, ‘these are so fucking boring’,” recalls Cohen. “As a response we took photos in any spare time we had; bearing in mind we had no idea what we were doing with a camera. We ended up with some horrendous images that probably rivalled those holiday photos. All that stuff is on a hard drive somewhere that I want buried with me when I die. We’ve got a bit better since then.”

Their work is provocative, energetic and empowering, served with a side of humour, often with a darker undercurrent. Think titillating nudity censored with emojis, fake blood dripping from bare breasts and erotic poses. “Myself and Millicent have always been quite weird in each other’s company, spurring each other on to always take things to a darker place,” says Cohen. “This could be a curse, but I see it as a blessing.” Both artists cite cinema as their main inspiration. “Specific movies that set the tone for the darker stuff I like now – Pink Flamingos, Kids, Gummo, Scorpio Rising, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, there are too many to list,” says Cohen, who’s also drawn to photographers like William Eggleston, Cindy Sherman, Martin Parr and Nan Goldin who “create a strong narrative element from what should be a mundane image”. Meanwhile, Hailes loves the work of Larry Clark, Diane Arbus, and Helmut Newton (“for how he saw women”.)

When it comes to Instagram, both Cohen and Hailes have an account to get entirely lost in. Creating a sense of acid-trip alt-reality with their heightened aesthetic and hyper-sexualised imagery, the image-sharing app has become an extension of their work. “It’s allowed me to use myself as the subject perhaps more regularly than if it didn’t exist,” says Cohen. “A psychic porn star from Vegas summed it up once with, ‘Nadia Lee you’re a very sexual person but it’s all inside your head’. Life is too short to fade away in a drab outfit with an Instagram full of your dog or photographs of what you’ve inhaled that day. I’d much rather make people feel uneasy or offended than make them feel nothing at all or indifferent towards me or my work; at least then they’re feeling something… isn’t that what art is all about?” For Hailes, it helps people understand her work and the thought process behind it. “I feel really strongly that I live my work,” she says. “It’s really important to be the woman that I want to photograph too, so I don’t separate myself from my work that way.”

Of course, female nudity is commonly wrongly associated with the word “objectification”, one of the reasons that Cohen started her series 100 Naked Women. “Post-feminism is associated with women taking control of their own self-image rather than being objectified by men,” says Cohen. “This is something I strive to do with my images of myself as well as my work, often by injecting a touch of irony and humour to promote non-sexual images that carry a narrative.” Adds Hailes: “I’ve found my work on porn sites or porn tumblrs, they’ve been taken out of their original context and placed into another by somebody else. I guess my work and imagery means something different to different people, but I guess that if my images make me, and the women I’m photographing feel empowered and strong, then they’re doing their job. You can’t dictate how images will be received, you just have to shoot with the correct intentions. It’s always better to get a reaction than no reaction at all.”

“My family is seventh-generation from Los Angeles, my great grandfather was actually the first Mayor of Santa Monica. I think I lived in 16 different houses growing up, everywhere from Elvis’s old bachelor pad, to living across the street from the old Tate House on Cielo [where the Charles Manson “family” committed the Tate murders in 1969]. I became really obsessed with it.”

Blogger, model, actress, activist, creative director and some-time DJ. We’ve heard it all before, mainly via LinkedIn. But ahead of slapping an “everything and nothing” label on LA-raised polymath Hailey Gates’ brow, it’s worth taking a closer look at her CV. After graduating from NYU in 2012, the playwright and actress worked full-time as an editor at The Paris Review while writing and co-producing a docudrama about a trip to Mars with artist Tom Sachs called A Space Programme. She used up her summer vacation to film scenes for Jonathan Demme’s August release Ricki and the Flash, and starred alongside various other Hollyweird luminaries in Miu Miu’s much-shared fall campaign. Between filming for TNT’s new show Public Morals, and travelling the world investigating women’s rights for a Vice documentary series, Gates’s wall planner is certifiably full-to-bursting.

Top and earrings, MODEL’S OWN

LA’s Paloma Elsesser has fast-become something of an Instagram icon. Posting regular selfies that show her body in its full voluptuous form, she’s become an unlikely source of inspiration for people dealing with negative body image issues. Amassing 25k followers on the platform, ironically Elsesser has landed stints modeling for Timberland and more.

“I personally don’t harness much resentment for the term [“plus size model” – which inevitably Elsesser has been labelled with]. By modelling standards, we are not the standard. However, its affects are damaging because plus-size models represent a demographic that is much more realistic.” Hopefully, Elsesser’s successes represent an increasingly fresher outlook in the fashion industry.

When I catch up with 19-year-old Anya Taylor-Joy, the trailer for her first feature film, The Witch, is blowing up online. The new England folktale, written and directed by Robert Eggers, was dubbed one of the standout films at this year’s Sundance Festival, where it not only won him the Directing Award in the US Dramatic category, but also saw Taylor-Joy being hailed as a breakout star and one to watch.

Shot over just five weeks, the film follows a devout Christian 17th century family, whose newborn son disappears without a trace, inciting rumours that Taylor-Joy’s character, Thomasin, is practicing witchcraft. While the theme may be one we see lazily churned out Halloween after Halloween, critics across the board are agreeing that this movie is a mustwatch – with Time Out New York calling it “One of the most genuinely unnerving horror films in recent memory.” God knows we’re overdue one.

Taylor-Joy claims never to have even seen a scary movie before The Witch, but as I chat to her about my decreasing faith in Hollywood horror, she’s surprisingly well aware of the formulaic approach to the genre that seems to have been adopted by so many. “Look, I’m very green to the industry, but that’s something that’s always bothered me about movies in general; once there is, as you said, a formula, or something that’s obviously successful, people emulate it again and again. In doing so we’ve forgotten the true faces of fear… and that’s what this film really plays upon; the fact that real fear is something deeply rooted in all of us – that’s why so many people are genuinely unnerved by it.”

The storyline had a true resonance with Taylor-Joy, who was raised Catholic between London and Argentina. She recalls not sleeping a wink the evening before the audition, because she was so gripped with fear after having first read the script.

“It just got to me, man. Whatever my religious beliefs are now, a lot of it really freaked me out because I could one hundred percent understand why incredibly pious people would feel such guilt, shame and isolation in that situation because of how I was brought up. Rob’s just an incredible creator, and the words he’s written are horrible… completely horrible.”

The youngest of six, Taylor-Joy’s taste in films is a quirky mix of 90s kids classics and both Spanish and Argentine cinema. “I grew up watching a lot of Spanish movies… and one of my all-time favourites is an Argentinian romcom called Un Novio Para Mi Mujer… I feel like Argentina feels somehow really far away from the rest of the world, and it results in a really unique sense of humour… you have to watch it. But so far as the films that made me want to act, it was the stuff I watched with my brothers and sisters when they were growing up, like Richie Rich and Free Willy. I was like, I don’t know what that kid is doing but he got to ride a whale, and that’s awesome! How do I do that?”

While her role in The Witch may be a far cry from Jesse’s in Free Willy, Taylor-Joy’s fast proving that she’s capable of mastering pretty much any character thrown at her. She’s just wrapped another lead role in a movie, this time playing an artificial human/robot in a fuck-off budget sci-fi thriller directed by Luke (son of Ridley) Scott. It certainly hasn’t been a bad year.
