Your favourite childhood toy is getting a makeover and she’s never looked better.

4. Barbie x Sadie Williams 2014

Barbie was our only childhood companion. Cindy and Bratz dolls could never quite match up to our best pal and we always loved her, promise, even that time we were curious what she’d look like with a shaved head. She worked it, needless to say. For 2016, the once universal doll is taking on three new styles. In March, Barbie will be available in petite, tall and curvy models setting a body positive example for girls (and boys!) everywhere.

March will see the introduction of – brace yourself – 33 new dolls, 30 new hair colours, 24 hair styles, 22 eye colours, 14 face sculpts, 7 skin tones AND 4 body types. To celebrate the news, we recount some of Barbie’s best collaborations in fashion since her launch in 1959.

Barbie x Stephen Jones

Barbie_SJ_Christmas_Tree

Our best girl got the angel treatment by Stephen Jones for Christmas 2011. The milliner reworked Barbz into a festive wonder for Selfridges in crimson and green and obviously with the most divine headgear. Glitzy miniature trees complete with baubles, twirling body-encasing Santa hats and even a microscopic robin all upped Barbie’s hat game for the 2011 holidays.

Barbie x Nasir Mazhar

Barbie_Nasir_Mazhar

Never one to miss out on trends, Barbie teamed up with London streetwear darling Nasir Mazhar in 2013. Sporting his signature caps and instantly recognisable namesake logo, we could have replicated any of Barbie’s looks from the mini-collection and been the best-dressed at fashion week.

Barbie x Comme Des Garçons

Barbie_CDG

Way back when in 2009 CDG launched their uber-ladylike Ms Roberts (Barbie’s full anme is Barbara Millicent Roberts, in case you didn’t already know). Wearing the brand’s jingle flower print, the doll was super exclusive, as we’d expect, sold only in Comme stores, Dover Street Market and Colette.

Barbie x Moschino

Warning: the jingle to this clip will stick in your head for days. 2015’s Moschino Barbie had every unabashedly bling accessory we’d ever dreamed of owning. “She’s the girl who has it all, nothing can stop her”, we like to think we’d be feeling unstoppable too if we had a custom 8-piece Moschino capsule collection. Also, how adorable is the little guy? Gender roles? What gender roles?

Barbie x Karl Lagerfeld

download

When Karl took on Barbie he basically dressed her up as himself, but we’ll forgive him, he is Karl Lagerfeld after all. All in black and white complete with sunnies and patent handbag, all Karl’s Barbie is missing is a tiny Choupette.

Barbie x Sophia Webster

Sophia-Webster-Barbie-Collection

Barbie and Sophia Webster collaborated last year to mark her new articulated ankles which allowed to wear flats – a good enough reason to celebrate if we ever heard one. Even better was the fact that you could buy your own Sophia Webster shoes in six adult styles and three children’s. Blonde bombshell soul-pop singer Kali Uchis was the face of the IRL collection, an all round dream.

Barbie x BLEACH London

B7

Four years ago Barbie got all technical on us with an innovative makeover system from BLEACH London. Using an inkjet printer and extensions, you could create your own coloured locks for Barbie at home. You could design absolutely anything online then print onto Barbie’s blonde base. We went through quite a few trying to work out what we wanted to do on ourselves…

The LFW madness is over, for now. Here, we chart the best bits from AW15 to see what we’ll be wearing after the summer.

A-8

Whether you’ve hung up this season’s most outrageous outfit or jumped on the next plane to Milan, the dust and glitter leftover from LFW is just beginning to settle. It’s unlikely that you’ll forget the best moments from the AW15 shows but we’ve listed our top seven just to make sure. You can thank us when you’re back from Paris.

Shouty Slogans

Z81A0075

Ashley Williams was serving up truth with her patches. “Improve your image, be seen with me,” words anyone wearing the new collection can say wholeheartedly. Ashish’s “SEX” jumper will certainly sell, proving the saying true and Sophia Webster’s never-fail clutches were adorned with messages of “Touch my Clutch” and our favourite piece from her was the “Sexy Back” backpack. Simple, effective, cute.

Furry Friends

SHRIMPS-3889

Obviously, for AW, fur was everywhere. Our favourites were of the patchwork variety at Ashish or on the hems of latex macs at Sibling (is there some sort of waiting list we need to be on for one of those btw?). The cutest was faux and worn on the Martian models at Shrimps, with their selection of fluff trimmed peep toes, striped coats and petal shaped clutches. Vibrantly coloured, utterly dreamy and probably softer than the real bunnies at Marcus Lupfer.

Street Walkers

A-2

Ashish made it ok for us to wear hooker boots, whether they’re PVC, lace-up, platformed, or all three. Over at Fyodor Golan they came in thigh-high baby pink patent styles, whilst Ed Marler took on a trashy tone too with his laced trousers and his models worked it in the highest energy show of the season with one of the best set designs and soundtracks too.

Boho is Back

Burberry-Womenswear-Autumn_Winter-2015-Collection-Look-1-726x1024

Tassels and fringing galore were on show at Burberry and Temperley. Temperley luxed it up with jewel colours and sequins whereas Burberry stuck to the classic 70s earth tones, suede and florals. Topshop Unique also snuck into retro territory with au naturel hair, high necklines, shearling and the sweetest dandelion prints and embroidery, not to forget Paul Smith’s mustard shearling number, sure to be a favourite when autumn comes rolling in.

Gothic Girls

TU-8

Vivienne Westwood always has something dark or devilish and this season was no exception with Rollacoaster cover girl Daisy Lowe taking to the catwalk in a hip hugging black lace gown, with scary almost industrial neck chains to up the ante. Giles was the real goth girl collection though with pieces straight out of a fairytale. Exaggerated bows, ruffs and dominatrix PVC gave the perfect balance between traditional and contemporary and black slick lips teamed with french plaited hair combined girlishness and witch-chic.

Pretty in Pink

Z81A0278

It’s a tried, old and untrue stereotype that’s blue’s for boys and pink’s for girls but you would have taken it as gospel at LFW. Every shade of blush, petal, peach, magenta and even Pepto Bismol was on show just about everywhere. House of Holland, Ashley Williams, Simone Rocha and Sibling skirted around the saccharine with PVC and latex infused collections whereas Molly Goddard embraced the fluff and frills of the colour with her dreamy fairytale tulle creations.

One of the Boys

Z81A9486-682x1024

No nonsense was had at Margaret Howell, Paul Smith, Belstaff or Joseph. Clean lines, wintry colour palettes and heavy focus on shirts, coats and tailoring at all three brands made a more masculine trio of collections. Loose cuts at Paul Smith will make everything look like you borrowed it from your boyfriend or your brother, in a good way, that is.

Freak Like Me

With an invitation that read: “Freak Like Me”, we were expecting another insight into Webster’s wildly wicked world, and boy did we get one. Stepping foot inside Shaftesbury Avenue’s derelict Welsh Chapel, we were met by a diamond-print clad contortionist, bending her body to the most bizarre of shapes, complete with Sophia Webster heels, of course. Continuing our journey up the barely-standing metal spiral staircase, it was here we found the main event. A live presentation of blunt-bobbed girls wearing futuristic costumes, on a roundabout that signified Piccadilly Circus, Webster accessories on show.

Coca-Cola Candy Kane

Teaming up with Coca Cola this season, Webster presented hi-shine coke-print stilettos, complete with a heel of stacked up hearts. A glitter faced, red and white candy-cane-clad model made them hot property, leaving us to decide wether we should twin them with a Coca Cola print backpack or an “If You Only Drank Cherry Coke” clutch.

Clutch Control

Shoes aside, Webster is renowned for her tongue-in-cheek, covetable clutch bags, and this collection served plenty. Reading “Miss Thang”, “Touch My Clutch”, “Hot Stepper” and “Say My Name”, we can’t wait to get our hands on Webster’s backpack that read: “Sexy Back”.

A trippy Mayan apocalypto girl gang and a bass heavy soundtrack – Sophia’s Jungle is Massive

Jungle is Massive

The invitation gave it away from the start. From the moment we set foot in The Vaults, aka. Sophia Webster’s all immersive Jungle is Massive cave, we knew we were in for a treat. Blacked out with each wall splattered in UV graffiti to a pounding bass-heavy underground jungle compilation mixed by Rinse FM, this was not just any presentation but a hedonistic all-singing, all-raving Sophia Webster signature.

Acid hues and Aztec prints

This season Sophia metamorphosed leopard print, Aztec prints and jungle foliage in electrifying acid hues. From girl-gang warriors clad in knee-padded thigh-high boots, to banana print backpacks, Jungle clutches and weighty embellishments – this was Sophia’s trippy fantasy world and we were part of it.

Sophia’s girl gang

Encaged amongst the eye-popping graffitied walls was Sophia’s girl gang – the stars of the presentation. Bringing to life Webster’s kitsch designs, the dreadlocked babes with Mayan apocalypto movie inspired make up added to the overall trippy underground aesthetic.

Bright matte lips were a noticeable beauty trend on the catwalk for Spring/Summer 13, with lavish and bold colours that had us lusting after a stand out pout. So luckily Revlon’s “cottoned” on, as its latest innovation in colour stay technology brings us the Colorstay Ultimate Suede lipstick, with a semi-matte finish that lasts an indecent number of hours.

The range covers 14 sophisticated shades and the best thing about it is Revlon’s collaboration with award winning footwear designer Sophia Webster, the former design assistant to Nicholas Kirkwood & winner of British Fashion Council’s Newgen sponsorship. Webster’s exclusively designed a pair of statement heels to match each colour of Revlon’s latest lipsticks, which will brighten a very monochromatic summer wardrobe.

Priding her unique designs on “feminine style and strong silhouettes,” she’s had some of fashion’s top names tongues wagging. From Mimi Kiss Me to Liza Get Lippy, Loren Pout and Kiki Kisses, these are just some of the inventive styles that’ll put a spring in your step.
