New Look Men team up with Rollacoaster Magazine to celebrate the formidable BoomBox ten years on.

BoomBox is a name synonymous with the fashion elite. Undeniably one of the most prestigious cult nights of the noughties, the seminal fashion party attracted industry powerhouses, including designers, photographers and creative directors as they took their first steps into the huge and unpredictable world of fashion.

Adored by the likes of Henry Holland, Giles Deacon and Gareth Pugh, the event was curated by Richard Mortimer, editor of the fashion week must-read Rollacoaster Magazine. As part of the AW17 show schedule, New Look Men teamed up with Rollacoaster for a one-off BoomBox event to celebrate the party ten years on – and we were lucky to enough to get hold of the hottest ticket in town.

Held at London’s edgy Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen, which has previously held major musical events for the likes of Grimes, Foals and Florence & The Machine, the party included delightful drinks served up by Jack Daniels and a guest list containing many of the names at the forefront of the British fashion industry, including designers Henry Holland and Bobby Abley and Chief Exec of the British Fashion Council Caroline Rush CBE.

Catering to the eclectic crowd, which also included major names from non-fashion industries such as olympian Tom Daley, Arsenal footballer Hector Bellerin and musician Connor Maynard, the three different rooms that make up Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen ensured that there was something for everyone. The main bar & kitchen areas enabled attendees to relax and sip on Smirnoff and Warsteiner while discussing this season’s hottest shows and must-have pieces. The event space was a little more electrifying. Within the smokey, blue-hued room, party-goers grooved to a plethora of bouncy beats provided by designers and photographers such as Henry Holland, Matthew Stone as well as Bobby Abley and Charles Jeffrey who both presented their AW17 collections at this season’s LFWM – they were to die for FYI.

The lively event and amazing atmosphere highlighted that despite the 10 year absence, BoomBox has maintained its relevancy and would be more than capable of making a full-time comeback. The demand is always incredibly high for fashion events that accommodate every corner of fashion, and New Look Men x Rollacoaster x BoomBox won over the hearts of the fashion gang.

The high-fashion event was made possible with the help of high-street super-power New Look Men, who continue to build on their reputation for ensuring that the British man is styled to perfection. With over 850 stores, including 266 across the world, it’s clear that the New Look brand is ever on the up. With new lines added weekly, much like BoomBox, New Look embrace the ever-changing face of fashion and ensure that each and every fashion-lover is kitted out in the most up-to-date threads.

We’ve heard on the grapevine that the cult fashion party will have an open-to-all event lined up in the not too distant future, and if the New Look Men x Rollacoaster offering was anything to go by, you don’t want to miss it.

Brooklyn Beckham is Rollacoaster’s new cover star. Here, we go behind the scenes with our new favourite Beckham boy.

Shot by James White, 16 year old Brooklyn Beckham is the cover star of the “Infinity and Beyond” issue of Rollacoaster. His second cover after his feature for Man About Town’s Spring Issue last year, the no-so baby Beckham is following in the footsteps of his formidable fashion mum, Victoria Beckham. Here, Greg Barnes takes us behind the scenes on Brooklyn’s Rollacoaster shoot.

The issue also features Gabriel Day-Lewis, Krept and Konan, Andrea Pompilio, Lianne La Havas, Charles Jeffrey, Torin Verdone, Vetements, Sibling and Diplo, making this (in our humble opinion) the biggest and best issue of Rollacoaster to date. The “Infinity and Beyond” issue is on sale now.

For her part in next year’s big screen adaptation Aladdin, party pro Bip Ling teamed up with indie rock maven-turned-director Adam Green. Here, they chat paint, psychosis and pixel palisades

BIP LING 1 Bip wears black neoprene frill top by Simone Rocha from Browns Fashion and black net headpiece by Stephen Jones.

Taken from the Boys&Girls issue of Rollacoaster:

“BIPPING. MOOCHING. BLOGGING.” That’s right, as the Twitter biog of nightlife writer, designer and DJ Bip Ling suggests, she does a lot of, well, stuff. And she can add “thespianism” to her roll call of pursuits, playing Jasmine in a forthcoming adaptation of Aladdin. The film’s director and protagonist is Adam Green – famed for co-fronting New York anti-folk ensemble, The Moldy Peaches.

Kickstarter-funded, with a cast including Natasha Lyonne and Macaulay Culkin, Green’s sophomore film project is highly anticipated. The two met while they “were both DJing in Rome, about four years ago” and now, exclusively for Rollacoaster, they chat through the project.

BIP LING 7

Bip wear black and green fur coat by Roberto Cavalli.

Rollacoaster: When did you approach Bip about the role, Adam?

Bip: I remember when you first texted me – I had an acting class thing on my desk. I wanted to do it, anyway.

Adam: So you were already taking acting classes?

B:  I wasn’t yet, but I was literally about to make a phone call to my acting teacher, who I’ve seen loads of times now. But obviously I was absolutely thrilled. And when Adam asked me, I was like “As if! I’m going to be a Princess”. I was over the moon.

A: What made you want to get into acting?

B: I met an actress, (I can’t remember her name) at an event, and she was telling me that when she acts, it’s like somebody asking her to describe her favourite painting in a different body. I’m quite an emotional person, anyway. I’m quite intense: I can feel my emotions and then I’m just a complete psychopath… but  I can channel it in front of the camera now.

A: What’s your favourite line from the film?

B: When I rejected the Prince, that was so funny. I felt like a bitch. I had to say, “no, I’m about as arrogant as I look”.

A: In that scene, Bip is visited by the Prince of Monaco, who is played by Penn Badgley from Gossip Girl. He comes into the throne room and the Sultan has a reality show. He films it inside of his castle, and she’s scared that her father is using her to increase ratings and so she rejects the Prince in front of the world. So you felt like a bitch, Bip?

B: Yeah, I was just really mean.

A: So that’s what we’ve made her in this movie –  a vicious rejector of men. But then that is the archetype of the Princess in Aladdin in a way, you know? OK so, how was practicing lines? You came in really knowing your lines…

B: Yeah I did actually. I mean, it was all quite daunting – having like a whole script and having so many different sections or whatever. But I just read it and read it and read it and then I asked loads of people for advice. I actually asked Jude Law for some tips, and he said, “remember your lines for a good actor, ask the director loads of questions and just know the story back to front and inside out”. I’d ask Selina Giles – who is my acting teacher – so many questions. She was telling me to record the other person in the scene – let’s say Aladdin [played by Adam] – on my iPhone and listen to it on my headphones when I’m on the train and stuff.

Describe your working relationship…

B: I don’t know what it is about Adam, but he’s just a genius. Your script is simple and so funny and then your music [Green also scored the film] and the costumes – it all comes together so well.

A: What did you think about the costumes?

B: I think it’s the coolest thing that’s ever happened – you are literally going to become a fashion legend.

A: It only occurred to me today, when we were in the cave, that we are making a fantasy adventure movie.

B: Yeah, exactly. I can’t wait to get back onto the set now. Aren’t you meant to be chasing all the girls around? And I’m meant to be the girl that you can’t get!

A: Despite the fact that because the whole world’s made out of cardboard in the film, people are never going to believe that we made it in the corner of a little room.

B: Yeah, for sure. It’s mind-blowing how many things are made out of cardboard in it. I can’t quite believe it to be honest.

A: We even had papier-mâché car keys made for one of the trucks.

B: Yeah exactly, and Champagne. What else do you have? Oh yeah, there’s a cigarette – that was pretty sick.

A: It might be fun to take all the props and make a different movie, too.

B: Yeah, I want to make a movie. You’ve inspired me so much; inspired me to paint and make music and now make movies.

A: Maybe we can make an off-shoot thing, somehing like the Adventures of the Princess and Aladdin, or the Adventures of Princess Barbara.

B: I was actually thinking of making a movie called The Princess’ Day Off.

A: The Princess’ Day Off – I felt that way about the movie. How do you feel the film reflects the current state of fashion?

B: I think fashion’s going all “bell-bottoms” – so it reflects it, yeah.

A: We started painting on Bip’s pants when she got here. We painted some pockets on Bip’s butt, within an hour of her New York arrival. I painted on Bip’s shoes, because I wanted them to be baby blue and you can’t find that colour in regular clothes. Also, if someone spills, like, tomato sauce on the clothes, I’ll just paint it over it.

B: The set is incredible – it’s like Adam’s mind. How many sets have you made for the film?

A: Like 40, or something.

B: That is absolutely… they are the most amazing sets I’ve ever seen.

A: I wanted the sets to look pixelated, so I used these four-by-four pieces of cardboard that you could arrange like tiles on a wall. It looks a bit like a mosaic to start with  – then they get filed together, so we have this 20ft-long catalogue of all the scenes. It’s like a card library when you have all the different rooms lined up.

B: Yeah it’s sick… I’m writing my Princess song at the moment – actually, I think I’ve finally finished it.

A: What’s it like?

B: It’s like, “I’m in my coconut bra, yah?”… I’m calling it “Notorious B.I.P”.

Former Rollacoaster cover girl and model turned designer Suki Waterhouse, has teamed up with Superga for AW14

ROLLA-COVER-SUKI-e1392396088716

Former Rollacoaster Issue 11 cover girl, model and actress Suki Waterhouse has made her first foray into the design world with her AW14 Superga collaborative collection. Set to continue as Superga’s brand ambassador for AW14, following in the footsteps of Alexa Chung and Rita Ora, Suki’s sixties driven sophomore campaign was shot in London and features the three exclusive flatform styles designed by Suki herself.

Renowned for her effervescent personality, her inspiring femininity and her infectious playfulness – Suki’s first collection for the brand brings precisely these qualities to life. Think sugary pastel blue and pink shades, contrasted with bolder red and navy options, heart imprinted soles and Superga’s signature plimsoll-meets-platform heel.

“I am very excited about the launch of my new collection with Superga UK. I really enjoyed creating for the brand and adding a piece of myself into the designs. I hope that everyone loves them as much as I enjoyed making them,” says Suki of the collaboration.

We take a closer look at the killer campaign:

Abbey Clancy is riding high as fashion’s reality TV crossover star, but what’s it like being a footballer’s wife who baulks at the “WAG” tag?

ABBEY JPG

Taken from the September Issue of Rollacoaster Magazine, on sale now:

“Don’t write that I was in my pyjamas looking minging,” laughs the perfectly formed Liverpudlian blonde in front of me. “Say I was looking really glam!” There’s no way in a million years that Abbey Clancy could ever look “minging”, even if she tried. We’ve seen her battle her way to first place on Strictly Come Dancing (“I was a maniac”), witnessed blood, sweat and tears on Hell’s Kitchen (“Oh god, I forgot about that”) and her pre-fame days on Britain’s Next Top Model before she was catapulted into the spotlight – and never once has she looked anything less than ideal. Even now, stood barefaced in her lounge clothes while cooking a stew, she looks quite the domesticated goddess in her Primrose Hill apartment. “As you can see [Hell’s Kitchen] taught me a few skills,” she laughs.

That’s the first thing I learn about Clancy – family means everything. She lives with her daughter Sophia, husband Peter Crouch and brother Sean, also a footballer, who’s just texted her a photo of a vintage brown fur coat she might like. Having just returned from Disneyland Paris (“It was great, but the queues were just insane and everyone is so rude there!”), the second thing I note about Clancy is how much she values manners. “The woman I idolise the most is my mum,” she says. “I think she’s a strong woman who raised four kids to be good-mannered, hard working, kind and happy. I just think she’s amazing.”

Family aside, her fashion idol is Brigitte Bardot. “I think she’s just insane. A sex Goddess, I love her.” For Clancy, it seems sex is always on the brain; whether it’s reflecting on her Rollacoaster shoot (“There was me and a young, half naked 19 year old boy. I was blushing like a child or a pervert, very unprofessional, but I was just so nervous and red.”) or her relationship with LOVE publisher and super-stylist Katie Grand (“I always end up naked with Katie!”).

It’s Grand who Clancy credits for helping her find her fashion feet. “She’s done so much for me that I could never pay her back for, she’s a gorgeous person who’s helped me so much,” she enthuses. “The first time I met her was when she asked me to do a shoot for LOVE. I turned up and she had a list of people there who were in the public eye, but not really seen in that fashion-y way. We just hit it off.” “Abbey is infectious – the epitome of a ‘bubbly blonde’,” says Grand. “She’s smart, hilarious, fun, has legs forever and one of the most rocking bodies I’ve ever seen. She loves clothes and has a perfect fugure for them (and bikinis). She really is a great girl, I love her.”

Abbey Clancy Wonderland

Abbey wears black cotton bra by La Perla and pearl drop earrings by Chanel Fine Jewellery.

Clancy’s first flirtation with fame came when she started a girl band called Genie Queen as a teen. “I loved singing when I was younger,” she recalls. “But it’s not something that I talk about. It’s highly embarrassing!” After a quick Google search, I can see why Clancy is keen to lock her inner pop star in the past, citing Britain’s Next Top Model as her big break. “Eight weeks away from home was quite scary and all the girls were fighting like cats and dogs,” she recalls. “I didn’t like all the bitchiness. I put a stone on in the house too, because I just couldn’t stop eating. They used to just feed us boxes of M&S flapjacks and I’d just eat them all day. I do love the show though.

Upon leaving the show, Clancy’s career snowballed, kicking of with her first “WAG” outing to Portugal with the England football team. “All my clothes were in my bag and they were all crappy and dirty from the [BNTP] house. The next thing I knew I was sitting in my crappy high street dress having dinner with Victoria Beckham who was done up to death!” But in truth, Clancy’s not interested in being a WAG. “I don’t really take offence to it, but it amuses me what people think is the reality. It’s not really real life – what you see in the magazines. They’re all normal girls going out with footballers.” No, she has bigger fish to fry: recently locking herself away for days on end, she designed a range of dresses for Liverpudlian retailer Matalan. “I work hard and I love to work, but I try and pick jobs on whether or not they will be fun,” she says, matter-of-factly.

When it came to deciding whether to appear on Strictly Come Dancing, she admits she needed persuading. “They had asked me to do it for a few years, and I had never been interested in doing it,” Clancy explains. “I thought there was nothing worse than going on TV and humiliating yourself, doing something you can’t do! But after having the baby, I needed some ‘me’ time and something exciting to do. And there I was, six months later, winning it.” She makes it sound so simple, but if one thing is for sure, Clancy doesn’t do things by halves. “I became so obsessed with it and so caught up in the Strictly bubble, that all my friends thought I was a complete psycho. One [friend] bought me a Strictly swear box, because it’s all I could talk and think about. I think everyone should take up dancing. You have a new lease of life and just feel great.”

If dancing is one of Clancy’s musts, we’re hoping for a revolutionary recommendation when it comes to maintaining a perfectly proportioned figure. As expected, we’re out of luck. “I went to the gym today for the first time since May and it nearly killed me! I’m just non-stop. I’m always running around, but I eat like a horse. I think everyone in my family is tall and thin. My baby weighs about ten stone, and I’m always lifting her! That’s a workout on its own,” she LOLs.

One of Clancy’s most iconic fashion moments was walking for Giles Deacon’s AW11 show. Naturally she looked impeccable – and, ugh, was pregnant at the time, too. “I had boobs like Pamela Anderson!” she hollers. “It was so fun. I love doing the high-end stuff… Not a lot of people see me in that way, but Katie has put me in Russian Vogue and on various front covers. I enjoy it, because I can dress up and be someone else. Someone a bit sexier and a bit harder.” Isn’t she sexy enough already? No, she’s aiming higher. “I want to shoot for Versace – their campaigns are so glamorous and sexy.” Oh, and then there’s “Victoria’s Secret… That’s the only real goal I’ve ever had.
