Richard Nicoll Spring/Summer 2014 Backstage

Last season was all about “post-punk no-wave rebellion” and Richard Nicoll’s SS14 collection felt like a natural progression from his autumnal urban offering. Teddy boys were tailored to the hilt and kitted out in butter-soft leather and mesh, and python print jacquard gave the collection an androgynous but luxurious sporty edge.

Our favourite look was Nicoll’s signature jumpsuit, which was toughened up with a leather waistcoat and quiffed hair so slick it hurt, but we were also fans of the varying shades of blue that were seen on jumpers, trousers, caps and jackets. The short trend was present again, too, and Nicoll’s own favourite pieces from the collection, the Linder Sterling collage prints, were printed on sweaters.

When you caught a glimpse of Nicoll at the close of the collection, it was once again obvious that Nicoll’s personal style is very much the sum of his designer parts. Clad in a blue jumper, loose trousers and trainers he looked the epitome of the subdued but sexy Richard Nicoll man. And there was fashion meta-ness (leather + prints = Givenchy, right?), too, which we love. You’ll wear this one.

Find out how Richard Nicoll beat final-show-of-the-day exhaustion with his autumn/winter collection.

Richard Nicoll AW13

Having one of the last slots of the day over London Fashion Week is never easy; inevitably you’ll be faced with showing to exhausted editors whose entire day has been running fashionably late due to one show pushing back another. The crowd had come from far and wide across London to glimpse Richard Nicoll’s latest offering, and after somewhat of a fashion scrum to the door, only the select few of the mass were allowed in.

Nicoll wasn’t the first designer this season to carry on where they left with their men’s collection by embracing masculine features (albeit adding a twist of femmed-up glamour). Cropped tailored trousers fell above patent pointed heels and hung loosely from below slender hips with a crisp shirt in dark hues and crisp white tucked in; outerwear overshadowed the body in ridged structures; knitwear was relaxed yet still insouciantly smart.

Amidst the grey tones, bursts of vibrant orange embossed snakeskin brightened the grey surroundings of the Tate Modern, before succumbing to a more neutral palette of elegant eveningwear, which unfolded glistening satin with finely embroidered detail and sheer accents. Running onto the catwalk for a celebratory lap, Nicoll managed to lift the mood of a room full of run to the ground editors on a Sunday night – certainly not an easy feat for even the most accomplished of designers and a concrete cause for celebration.

Some designers struggle to keep their voice in the transition between womenswear to menswear (and vice versa). Richard Nicoll, thankfully, is not one of those designers. The precision and firm grasp of technique that he brings to womenswear was fully applied to his AW13 menswear show to effortlessly slick effect.

The show notes  promised a “post-punk no-wave rebellion” with “a mix of industrial, classical essentials inspired by Brutalist architecture”. In translation, that meant tone-on-tone wool suiting, neutral blues and industrial greys, super-soft knits and abstract splatter prints – you could imagine all of it flying off the shelves. There were subtle nods to streetwear: fishermen beanies sat high on models’ heads, while discreet skater chains adorned trouser pockets. Never overlaboured and never extravagant: Nicoll down to a tee.

While trends resurface once over every few seasons: “the new minimalism”, “fifties revival” and so on and so forth, SS12 introduced a glimmer of something unseen – under the sea creatures on the catwalk. Designers dipped their toes in iridescent, futuristic fabrics, taking this season’s pretty pastels in a more esoteric direction; encapsulated in today’s shoot. Seahorses, shells, and starfish popped up everywhere in a muted palette of white, pale lavender, mint green and an array of underwater blues injected with glistening silvers.

Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel lead the pack transforming the Grand Palais into a surreal sea world: waffle-textured organza tanks and tops layered to resemble jellyfish, turquoise fish fins on tunic dresses, and mother-of-pearl accessories completing the looks.

Elsewhere at Versace, Donatella summoned deep-sea sirens in lithe mermaid dresses – from mini to figure-hugging full lengths. Signature-Gianni studs were scattered to look like sea urchin shells, but the trend came alive when photo-transfers of pastel seasides combined with the house baroque. Of course, being the print capital, London decidedly stole the show with engineered water-waves appearing on Peter Pilotto’s sculpturist silhouettes and J.W. Anderson’s aquatic paisleys.

While the overriding femininity of the trend isn’t for everyone, there’s always Haider Ackermann’s seaside nomads – veiled in cobalt blue sheer tops, persian green tapered trousers and slip on flats. Or Alberta Ferretti’s slim-cut slip dresses that fall loosely on the body, in thin, shiny fabrics and spaghetti straps for a louche nineties feel (complete with dripping wet locks).

Whimsical yet sharp, airy yet structured, the trend’s whispers of couture-detailing escape an antique feel, with innovative fabrics that push technology to fashion’s forefront. Less sports couture – this is every day opulence.
