The Spice Girls formed back in 1994. Scary, right? Eighteen years, 74 million album sales and four solo careers later, they reunited yesterday for the Olympics Closing Ceremony. Part business plan and part musical endeavour, girl groups have been spicing up our lives (sorry) since the 50s. Wonderland thought we’d pay our respects to some of the greats.

(1) The Supremes

The Motown super-group that made Diana Ross a star were the first all-black, all-female act to flaunt their femininity through high fashion, wigs and dance routines, changing how the world perceived African-American women. Kudos, ladies, kudos.

(2) Destiny’s Child

This list just wouldn’t be complete without the R&B trio that introduced the world to Beyoncé. Although some of their style choices fall into the questionable side of the noughties, these girls earned their power. Can you handle it?

(3) TLC

TLC won success for their sleek hip hop and R&B, their fame peaking in the golden age of the wind machine. Fun fact: the name TLC is derived from the girls’ nicknames – T-Boz, Left Eye and Chilli.

(4) The Spice Girls

The Spice Girls are officially the most successful girl group of all time. Scary, Baby, Sporty, Posh and Ginger shot to superstardom in the mid-90s, and the world never looked back. You know all the words – don’t deny it. Even Boris was dancing.

(5) Bananarama

In all their camp 80s glory, Bananarama have enjoyed more chart entries than any other girl group in the world. One member, Siobhan Fahey, went on to form Shakespears Sister. Here’s the most accurate representation of life behind bars since The Jailhouse Rock.

(6) Sugababes

The Sugababes’ line-up has been revolving like a carousel since their formation in 1998, but every incarnation has brought us big hits and big glamour. Their original trio recently reunited under the name Mutya Keisha Siobhan. Let the battle commence.

(7) Girls’ Generation

Reigning as K-Pop’s most successful exports, these girls never step an inch out of place, and the West is having no trouble embracing their high-budget videos and glossy, cutesy approach to pop. All tongues in cheeks for this.

OK, we admit it: we’re Olympics-obsessed. We’ve never checked BBC Sport so much in our life. Luckily Fred Butler‘s feeding our fashion-sport crossover needs at the adidas Olympics lounge – the accessories designer has been customising Olympian trainers (complete with contribution from dreamboat gymnast Louis Smith).

How did you get involved with this project?

I was recommended by someone I knew through work. I was glad to be chosen – the freedom to create is ideal for me. I’ve designed a memento for Stella to have, a keep-sake of the Olympic experience. Something she can have in her house as an ornament. It’s a 3D patch work necklace, made from cut up scraps of the kit designed to interlock with the chosen sprinter shoe – as a wedge or a platform, which she can wear.

Can you describe the customisation ideas you’ve got in store for the trainers?

As an accessories designer my approach is making pieces that will sit with the shoe as an additional item to decorate, rather than playing with the design of the shoe itself. I look to make something that will complement the shoe, and be detachable as something in its own right.

Do you remember your first pair of trainers?

Oh wow – they were grey hi-tops? I can’t remember – I’m really pleased with my new Adidas trainers though!

If you could be good at any Olympic sport, what would it be and why?

I think the ribbon looks fun. I think that’s just bizarre! I wasn’t good at Gymnastics while I was at school so I would like to know how to do it properly. It’s one that really fascinates me that it’s a sport because it’s a bit like dance – I like dancing.

If you could make your dream pair of shoes – no budget limits whatsoever – what would they look like?

Wow! Well, it would be a big rainbow on a cloud, like a massive platform, and with lights in it. I’m jealous that kids get to have those shoes with lights in and adults can’t have them!

If you designed the Olympic uniforms for Team GB, what would they look like? (Go crazy.)

When I do (giggle) I’d like to see a hoody in there because hoodies are really comfortable in addition to just the tracksuit jackets, and some really slouchy baggy trousers that are comfortable – make it a bit more urban.

How would you describe your style?

It’s colourful and fun. My style is about celebrating every day and making the day more interesting by having a good time in what I am wearing.

Can you give us a sneak preview description of your SS13 presentation for London Fashion Week?

There is a big musical element and that’s all I’m going to give away right now!

Every day of London 2012, live at the adidas Olympic Lounge, two artists from a carefully hand-picked shortlist will customise the Performance footwear of select Olympic athletes, inspired by the day’s winning ‘all in’ moment.

We’ve put aside our British cynicism and gotten into the Olympics spirit. Sue us – guess we got sucked into that whole “whole world coming together as one to celebrate human achievement” thing. To commemorate tonight’s Opening Ceremony, we count down the best moments of past ceremonies. Now all we have to do is pray for sunshine.

(1) Athens, 2004: Bjork sings Oceania

It’s not every Olympics country that manages to convince Bjork to write and perform a song for them – while wearing a 9,000 square feet dress.

(2) Beijing, 2008: Drumming song

You can criticise China for a lot of things, but putting on a bad show isn’t exactly one of them.

(3) Los Angeles, 1984: Rocket man flies in

Opening ceremonies used to be a rather sedate affair – until LA stepped in and flew a man into the stadium on a jetpack. Welcome to Hollywood.

(4) Barcelona, 1992: Antonio Rebollo shoots and scores

Just another garden-variety Olympic torch lighting? Not when you’ve got a Paralympian archer shooting the torch over the heads of hundreds of spectators and straight into the cauldron.

(5) Atlanta, 1996: Mohammed Ali lights the torch

Mohammed Ali was suffering from Parkinson’s and his hands were shaking, but that didn’t stop him from triumphantly lighting the flame right before Martin Luthor King’s ‘I Have A Dream’ speech played.

(6) Turin, 2006: Pavarotti sings for Italy

Not every country can lay claim to a 20-stone opera superstar bursting into song at the exact moment the Olympic cauldron bursts into flame. Katherine Jenkins doesn’t count.

(7) Sydney, 2000: Aboriginal beginnings

Probably the most celebrated of opening ceremonies, Sydney showed you didn’t have to use fancy pyrotechnics (although there are plenty of those too) to create something moving, evocative and entirely beautiful.
