Christopher Shannon Spring/Summer 2014 Hair

The prize for best hair at London Collections? Definitely Christopher Shannon: all the models looked like they’d be dipped headfirst into a giant pot of glitter. Were we the only ones who thought it’d make for a great look for a festival? You could be three days into Bestival’s muddiest year and still look like queen of the rave mermaids.

“The whole look is reminiscent of Christopher and his youth in Liverpool,” Creative Director of Fudge John Vial, told us. “When he was a kid with no money he wanted a groovy look to go disco-dancing so he used glitter – which is cheap – to create it. There’s a saying, ‘poverty fuels creativity’, and that was definitely the case here. Like with the punk movement, they had no money, so when they wore bin bags it wasn’t because they wanted to it wasn’t because they couldn’t afford patent leather. So Christopher said, ‘How can I jazz it up?’ The answer was glitter!

1. The first step is to brush the hair forward and sweep to the side. Prep the hair by painting Fudge Hair Varnish Shine Wax on with a tint brush and layering it up to create a sticky base. The problem with glitter is that it goes everywhere and doesn’t stay on so this step is really important for making sure that it stays in place.

2. Scatter different coloured glitter onto the hair. Make-up glitter is best to use although you can also use arts and craft glitter if you have nothing else. You can use as much or as little glitter as you like – you can even use these steps to create panels of glitter or even a dip-dye effect on longer styles. Finish it off with our Glitter Blast Spray.

3. Seal the glitter using a strong hair spray (we used Fudge Membrane Spray) and let it set. The beauty with this look is that it is so easy – it was great for a runway show where you need to be quick and efficient but it can also be used to create a bold look in a hurry. After all no one wants to spend hours getting ready – well, apart from in Liverpool, of course!”

One of YSL’s head make-up artists tells you how to achieve that Cara Delevingne Baby Doll look.

Fuck me eyes and sex kitten lips — dance-all-night babe Cara Delevingne certainly nails it as the face for YSL’s Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Baby Doll campaign. Inspired to flirt the night away with glam pouts and devilish ideas, we were delighted when our peeps at YSL gave us the exclusive how-to of the look, created by head YSL make-up artist of Northern Europe, Fred Letailleur.

1. Begin by applying Eyeliner Baby Doll Noir along top lashes – always direct your application towards the centre of the iris, rather than the outside of the eye. Avoid creating a line in one movement, instead, two separate strokes — first from the inner corner, then from the outer corner.

2. Create a modern structured flick by positioning the Baby Doll brush handle against the side of the nose to the corner of the eye. For added drama, extend the line further towards the hairline.

3. Apply Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Baby Doll to top and bottom lashes. To thicken, apply mascara to the top of your lashes from above before applying underneath. For an ‘eyes-wide-open look’ brush lashes upwards and outwards.

4. To complete the look, add a touch of colour to bare lips with a Rouge Pur Couture Vernis a Lèvres in Rose Baby Doll and coat nails with hot, high shine fuschia, La Laque Couture in Rose Baby Doll.

YSL’s Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Baby Doll is available for £24.50 at www.yslbeauty.co.uk

Lifting the lid on how the professionals get the look in our beauty editorials. First up: this bird-of-paradise beauty, perfect for spring/summer.

Chanel SS13 Beauty

“This shoot was all about colour, colour, colour!” make-up artist Lucy Bridge told us. “Bold and bright coloured mascaras and molten metallic shadows are the perfect combination to anyones makeup case – and the super colourful eye and lashes teamed with a bleached brow is perfect for SS13.”

1. The first step for this dramatic eye is the base the eye with Chanel SS13 Exclusive Creation Stylo Eyeshadow in Blue Bay all over the eye lid. Using an eye shadow blending brush blend into the eye crease. Then using Exclusive Creation Stylo Eyeshadow in Pink Lagoon press into the crease and up to the brow bone. Apply a few layers until the colour is really built up and strong. Bring Pink Lagoon under the lower lash line and blend out into the middle.

2. Next using the Exclusive Creation Stylo Eyeshadow in Jade Shore press into the inner corners of the eye using a small smudge brush and blend downwards and underneath the lower lash line. Again layer up to make the colour really prominent.

3. For a total colour clash add 3 coats of Inimitable Waterproof Mascara in Blue Note to top and bottom lashes.

4. Using your finger press Levres Scintillantes in Zephyr to the lips. Blot with a tissue for a muted look.

5. Les Beiges Powder was used on the skin for a natural and matte coverage.

Pat McGrath tells you how to achieve that Byzantine icon look.

The make-up at Dolce & Gabbana‘s autumn/winter 2013 show was one of our highlights of the season: a glamorous, aristo-couture look inspired by Byzantine chapels? Sign us up – we’ve never wanted to look more like a Christian relic in our lives.

So the good people at Dolce and Gabbana have made us very happy by sending over this make-up tutorial with industry legend Pat McGrath. She takes us through the look on Elite model Kate King, who opened the show in Milan – plus, it includes a rather handy tip on which lipsticks she combined to get that burgundy-meets-cherry shade on the runway. Perfect for that post-Rapture glow, right?

Head here for the full list of products that Pat McGrath uses.
