The gothic look stormed the AW12 catwalks this season, and the likes of Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron have been seen vamping it up on the red carpet this month. Goth is back and since today happens to be World Goth Day, Wonderland celebrates the top five hot film goths…

Winona Ryder

Ryder is your go-to goth girl. Beetlejuice was her first significant movie role and she definitely hits the gothic spot. She also played the deranged outsider, Veronica Sawyer in 90s cult hit Heathers.

Rooney Mara

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo signalled Hollywood’s rekindled love affair with the goth look back in 2011. Mara did it justice, having her ears and nipple pierced especially for the role. Mara’s also famed for her uncensored mouth and edgy dress sense.

Rose McGowan

An American TV show about the most powerful witches in the history of witchcraft is bound to have some hot goths in it. In Charmed, Rose McGowan plays the hottest of them all. Great body, black hair, insanely pale skin and a relationship with Marilyn Manson under her belt. She couldn’t be more gothic if she tried.

Fairuza Balk

Teen horror classic The Craft, is a hot goth frenzy. The most twisted of them, Nancy, is played by Fairuza Balk. With black lips and a studded choker necklace, she does the look well. Even her name is scarily gothic, the literal translation being “precious one”.

Kristen Stewart

Finally, a more recent take on the gothic look would be K-Stew’s vamped, lacey Marchesa number last week at the Snow White and the Hunstman premiere. Her stripping scene in Welcome to the Rileys is exceptionally goth hot, too…

The new Trailer Trash Tracys video for “Los Angered” – which premiered earlier this week -is a colour-drenched eye feast. It was directed by up-and-coming set designer Penny Mills, whose quirky set designs are getting attention in the fashion and music worlds. Wonderland quizzed Mills on her inspirations and aspirations galore.

Tell us a bit about the inspiration behind the Trailer Trash Tracys’ “Los Angered” promo.

I really love chemistry, and particularly how you can make very exciting things happen with very few simple house hold items. Milo and I had been watching these 80s kids’ science programs on YouTube and when the opportunity to pitch for the Trailer Trash Tracys video arose, I decided that, if filmed and used in the right way, it could really capture the ethereal nature of the song. We also looked at a lot of early and brightly-coloured music videos that had used green screen.

What was it like working with the band?

The band were great! It was great to work with people who were more interested in creating something visually interesting to look at than just a typical moody performance-based video.

The use of bright colours is a recurring theme in your work – why is this?

I am obsessed with colour. Perhaps it’s because I grew up in Mauritius, where I was exposed to a huge mix of ethnicities and brightly-coloured cultures and environments. But who knows?

Tell us about how you got involved with set design…

I did a degree in costume design, but found the discipline very restricting. Once I finished the degree, I started to assist a set designer called Gary Card. I really enjoyed that every job was different, and had its own set of challenges that meant that I was, and am constantly, discovering new materials and ways of working. Gary was really great and put me in touch with a lot of other people, and things just took off from there.

Your designs are always fun and playful – what are your influences and who inspires you?

I am particularly taken by the very tangible, and sadly maligned, special effects [in films] pre-dating CGI. I am hugely inspired by old horror and monster films, and will often reference films such as the Wizard of Gore or the Monster With a Thousand Eyes in my work. I would say that John Carpenter and David Cronenburg are two of my favourite directors. Films like The Thing and eXistenZ are what get me really excited about set design.

So, what’s next for Penny Mills?

I would like to continue making music videos and develop my skills as a set designer. I am currently writing a plot for a science fiction animation that I hope to make in the near future!

Britain’s Got Talent Vs America’s Got Talent /2012/05/15/britains-got-talent-vs-americas-got-talent/ Tue, 15 May 2012 15:05:41 +0000 http://www.wonderlandmagazine.com/?p=7909 America’s Got Talent have just revealed that controversial radio personality Howard Stern has been enlisted as newbie judge. America’s Got Talent have just revealed that controversial radio personality Howard Stern has been enlisted as newbie judge. True to form, he has already managed to offend one male stripper, telling him he has “a small package and man boobs”. From the weird, wonderful, brilliant and outright tragic, both America’s Got Talent and Britain’s Got Talent showcase the country’s best and worst “talents” (out of thousands of applicants, apparently the best Britain has to offer in 2012 is Pudsey the Dancing Dog – scoff). There’s no denying both shows offer us entertainment in abundance, with the likes of Susan Boyle and genuine talent such as Landau Eugene Murphy, winner of last years AGT. But it also brings the freaks, and the sometimes verging on unwell, into the public domain. Wonderland charts the best and worst auditions from either atrocity exhibitions.

The Best:

Probably one the best and funniest auditions in Britain’s Got Talent history. Boyle’s aspirations of becoming as famous as Elaine Page and cringe-worthy hip thrusting made her endearing from the get go. Boyle’s 2009 audition of Les Miserables’ “I Dream a Dream”, became an instant internet sensation – its view rate currently stands at a gobsmacking 92,222,375.

America’s younger, cuter Susan Boyle would have to be Jackie Evancho. The ten year old amazed the judges with her powerful operatic voice in 2010. Now somewhat of an opera sensation in America, she has released two albums and appeared in High School Musical (duh).

When car washer Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. auditioned on AGT he had a big dream, quite big teeth, and a very big voice. His rendition of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” won over the judges and lamped him the 2011 winner’s prize.

Worst:

Talent shows have that funny effect of making people think they have what it takes to sing, dance, and generally parade themselves in front of a nation’s people. Unfortunately, more often than not their audition doesn’t have the desired effect. Take a look at Eugene, the librarian who fancies himself as “…the white night on the stalion of poetry”.

Probably one of the most pointless auditions on America’s Got Talent was last year’s Mr Splash. His act was essentially belly flopping into a paddling pool. He could have died, but still, why? As one YouTube comment puts it: “this is not talent…this is stupid as fuck”. We couldn’t agree more, sir.

Candy and Cat make up Double Take, two angry timbrel players (not tambourines) who auditioned on Britian’s show in 2010. For those who don’t know what a timbrel is, it’s basically a large tambourine with tinsel hanging from it. Not only do the duo play a rather pointless instrument, they aren’t particularly good at it either. It all makes for rather sad viewing…

A song which rhymes “tennis racquet” with “Gucci glasses” can’t be taken seriously, surely? This is Serena Williams’ attempt to rebrand herself from Wimbledon champion to buzz new MC. She references the game throughout the leaked verse, including; “…on the court I serve em’ up, no subpoena,” and assures us she can “cook up the track like a frozen pizza.” Wonderland thought it fitting to have a look at some other celebrity rap missteps…

1. Joaquin Phoenix

Phoenix’s mokumentary film I’m Still Here documents his apparent career change from actor to rapper. Despite help from Diddy, this was the result…

2. Louis Theroux

Bless him…

3. Kobe Bryant ft. Tyra Banks

Who knew Kobe had a rap career? It lasted one song…

4. Chet Haze (aka Tom Hank’s son)

Chet rips off Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” in an ode to his university days.

5. Tila Tequila

Not quite sure what her profession is, but it surely can’t be rapper…
