C’mon, we all know about Bromance, we won’t insult by going through the ins and outs of Brodinski’s influential and achingly-cool label, just know that the second compilation tape is here. Homieland Vol. 2 sees all the boys back together again. Treat yourself to a mammoth 24 tracks from the likes of Brodinski himself, Sam Tiba, Myd and Panteros666. Major Lazer founder, Switch, makes an appearance alongside actor Omar Doom who releases his production work under Straight Razor plus skater-cum-producer Tommy Kruise. We’re not even halfway through the list.

We’ll let you discover the magic yourself and join the coolest gang of tastemakers there is going with Guillaume Berg’s minimix. While you listen, get the lowdown from all the homies we could find.

DISTAL

We’re all about the Bromance but which track other than your own do you wish you’d written on Homieland Vol.2?

Maelstrom – “Arteries”. Just so raw and simple. You know this would work so well on the dance floor.

Tell us about your contribution.

I wanted to write an uncomplicated DJ tool that had some ballroom affinity to it. This kind of music is fun to make to me. Just playing with a clean loop idea and how you can interchange different patterns for different results, and not worry about trying to create a song with structure. I think that’s everyone’s favourite part about writing computerized music, and I feel that’s what makes music like Hip Hop and Rap so fun to produce as well.

What have you been up to other than your work for the compilation?

I’ve been working hard on a release schedule for my music this year. Releasing on multiple labels with multiple EP’s and an album. I’ve got 2 albums done actually. One of the albums will be more of what I posted about in the last question and the other has an experimental approach and is a bit more robust in design and should include a 3D VR music video with it as well. The video is done with pre-production I’m just scouring for investors to make it a reality.

As far as my label Anarchostar is concerned, we’re pressing the next release with DJ Vague aka Helix right now. If you didn’t know, my label Anarchostar is centred around a dystopian science fiction story that I’ve written. Each release will get its own story to play into the larger overall story of the Anarchostar. I won’t reveal too much right now as the web comic is coming to completion and you should be able to read it in a few weeks. We’ve produced an animated music video for that one that will be dropping realistically in April when the release comes out. I really try to put as much as I can into each release to make sure it’s as close to perfect as I can make it. I really love that side of my career. It’s fun to take a different role.

Other than all that I’m reading comics, going to the cinema, writing jokes, playing with my cats, hiking with the wife and smoking weed in my new home of Seattle.

WITH YOU

We’re all about the Bromance but which track other than your own do you wish you’d written on Homieland Vol.2?

“Blood Mind” by Sister City.

Tell us about your contribution, why should your track be our favorite?

Our track should be your favourite track because it’s the best song ever made with human body parts.

What have you been up to other than your work for the compilation?

We’ve been working on our next releases, which will be a record with Idris Elba, a mixtape this spring as well as remixes for Jeremih, DJ Mustard and Dua Lipa.

Feral

We’re all about the Bromance but which track other than your own do you wish you’d written on Homieland Vol.2?

“Blood Mind” from Sister City is so brutal, I love it. It starts off pretty unassuming, but has this way of creeping up on you. It’s so perfectly set up that by the time that first kick drum comes in, it hits you like a baseball bat. It would be a perfect match for your Raya account.

Tell us about your contribution, why should your track be our favourite?

My track is called “WASP”. For me the most interesting part of making music is in adding details. “WASP” is funny because the theme is really only one chord, but it has a hundred tiny details moving and shifting around you that give it life. On the surface I think it gives this impression of just being a banger, but there are so many little twists and turns in there I think once you look under the hood, those details make it more fun to listen to.

What have you been up to other than your work for the compilation?

“WASP” is a part of a longer EP I’ve just finished putting together, which will hopefully be out pretty soon. Apart from that, I’m working on being better about saying goodbye before I leave a party.

GENER8ION

We’re all about the Bromance but which track other than your own do you wish you’d written on Homieland Vol.2?

Brodinski & Shy Glizzy – “Woah”. It’s going to be a hit.

Tell us about your contribution.

It’s pretty hard to define, crossing over different genres. It’s not really club music. Maybe “stadium music for a sunset at the beach”, which sounds a bit contradictory. But you’ll understand when you hear it.

What have you been up to other than your work for the compilation?

I’m working on the visual magazine of GENER8ION, called Unite Or Perish and featuring the work of people linked to the project. And a new EP on Bromance!

THE BLAZE

We’re all about the Bromance but which track other than your own do you wish you’d written on Homieland Vol.2

“Woah”, Brodinski & Shy Glizzy, “Voxes Roll”, Canblaster.

Tell us about your contribution, why should your track be our favorite?

We composed “Virile” as a song you could sing the chorus along with you friends. We conceived that song for that moment when you’re at a party and you let everything go, the moment when you share your intimacy with the others. According to us, references are pointless, we won’t give any. We could just do some name-dropping but it’s up to you to decide if it’s relevant or not.

What have you been up to other than your work for the compilation?

In 2015, we laid the foundations for the Blaze, and in 2016, it finally comes to life. Usually, blazes spread quickly, don’t they? I guess you’ll hear about us pretty soon, things we’d rather talk about when they’ll be out. Advertising is not our thing. For the time being, we’ll just say that we’ll back very soon.

Homieland Vol. 2 is out now.

RB CWS Astrid + Brodinski (sq)-9574

As one of London’s most exciting and innovative menswear talents, it’s no surprise that the Danish-born designer Astrid Andersen would be discriminating when it comes to picking beats. She couldn’t have chosen much better than Brodinski – the French DJ and producer who, with his label Bromance, is one of the most respected talents in the business – who worked with Andersen to produce a killer playlist for the show.

The collaboration, born out of the Red Bull Catwalk Studios Project, has resulted in something that’s a little bit Trap and a little bit dark-Techno, with a lot of raucous, lively beats – a great match for the queen of vibrant, urban-fashion. Featuring SoundCloud heroes like Tommy Kruise, underground hip-hop from the likes of Bricc Baby and plenty of original cuts from Bromance’s upcoming release Homieland Vol. 2, it’s definitely one to stick on to take you into the Saturday evening. We sat down with Andersen and Brodinski to find out a little bit more about the collection and how this collaboration came about.

Astrid Andersen

What has been soundtracking your time in the studio this season?

We listened a lot to The Velvet Rope by Janet Jackson, to me it’s one of the greatest records of all time! And I won’t lie for those late nights we have been listening to Justin Bieber, there’s no getting around it!

What were your main inspirations for AW16?

This season there just weren’t that many clear references or themes. It just clothes that I felt like making. I love to work in fabrics that are unusual for my aesthetic and try and make them look like they belong here, so this season I worked with a very traditional UK tweed mill and wanted to really work in an iconic fabric but make it ours and not ladylike.

Who is the ultimate pin-up guy for AW16?

Obama.

What’s your favourite piece from the collection?

The tweed tracksuit and bomber gets me exited!

What about Brodinski made you want to collaborate?

Everything! When the red bull catwalk studio approached me re my catwalk music this season I knew I wanted to work with him. He is so talented, I was so honoured when he took the time to work on this mix with me! As an artist he is very confident in creating a new sound and as a person, when he walks into a room you instantly know he is the boss, and he smiles a lot and is genially one of the nicest people I have met – it’s such an attractive combination, he becomes inspirational on all levels!

How did you start to plan your mix for Astrid?

Astrid gave me a bit of direction, influences and mood to bring together the right music around the new collection. Then I improvised!

After the show… where else is the ideal place for us to play the mix?

You could run to it, cook to it, get stoned to it (shh…hah) but I think if you listen to it in the car (while driving please) you gonna hear the real thing.

How closely did you and Astrid work together?

We had a chance to meet in London and work together on it, so I’m happy as soon as she is!!
I’m just here to take care of the music.

Are we going to see you in any of Astrid’s AW16 pieces?

Probably! I already love her work, cannot wait to see what’s coming too!

We stream ‘In My Veins’ off the self-styled first lady of bromance’s first EP.

Louisahhh!!!

Louisahhh!!! – go-to vocalist for Brodinski and Bromance Records crew member – has jumped on many an excellent track (her truly great appearance on Danny Daze’s ‘Your Everything‘, for one) but she’s come into her own right as a DJ and musician. No surprise, judging from this track off her debut EP, Transcend.

Mind describing what ‘In My Veins’ is about?

‘In My Veins’ is about connection, both to another human, and to the darkness – the night in oneself. The prefix ‘Trans’- means across or beyond, so to kind of dissolve boundaries and saturate into that moment, into each other. I also just learned that in astronomy ‘trans’ means that a given object is ‘farther from the sun’. I feel that the track is pretty far from the sun.

So how would you want listeners to react to the song?

I want listeners to dance! To really let the music move them, to stir some wildness rise up in them. Ideally at the crest of the night, when an intimacy has developed between the crowd and the DJ, this is when I would want it played. It is also really good to walk around alone in a city at night, feeling invincible and full of life.

Give us the lowdown: who is Louisahhh!!! and what is she all about

I grew up in New York City, always played music, had a wild youth resulting in being shipped to Los Angeles in 2006, where I have lived until recently, chasing the muse with a fervor. What else? My favorite food is sweet potato. I have a horse, his name (Jesse) is tattooed in my lower lip. This whole life is an attempted expression of gratitude, I am really thrilled to be alive.

What do you love most about electronic music?

Tough one! Electronic music has lifted me from the darkest times. I have been both formed and healed on the dance floor, undoubtedly. There is something alchemical and indescribable about music from computers transforming the human heart – it is my greatest hope to do that for another person as it has been done to and for me.

You’ve released records with Throne of Blood, Nurvous etc… Who’s your dream person to work with, alive or dead?

Beethoven. There is a certain untamable ferocity to his music that speaks to me – he is responsible for the divide between the classical and romantic, which is a place I strive to be.

Could you ever see yourself going disco, ala Daft Punk and Pharrell?

I certainly have elements of disco in my musical heritage – I have always loved Chic and Larry Levan and the joyful, sexy, slickness of it. I wouldn’t rule it out, but it’s not where I’m at right now.

There’s been a big resurgence of dance music lately, especially in the mainstream charts – what do you think is behind that?

I don’t know… Especially in America, we are in a weird cultural moment, an adolescence almost, where something that was always a subculture is getting its head above water on a much broader level for the first time, and it is still a subaqueous creature in a lot of ways, so it’s a little retarded in the bright light of the mainstream.

Pop music is referencing, descending into or taking notes from dance music, from David Guetta to Duke Dumont to Skrillex to Baauer. DJs have become rockstars, people want a show. It will be interesting to see how this chapter unfolds, given the gnat-like attention span of the “post-MTV generation”, or whatever we are now. As far as I am concerned, dance music is eternal; its place in the mainstream may or may not last – this happened before, it was called ‘electronica’. Regardless of what unfolds, we do what we do, and hopefully there will be a crossroads of creative integrity and commercial success. It’s the most one can hope for, right?
