Your favourite childhood toy is getting a makeover and she’s never looked better.

4. Barbie x Sadie Williams 2014

Barbie was our only childhood companion. Cindy and Bratz dolls could never quite match up to our best pal and we always loved her, promise, even that time we were curious what she’d look like with a shaved head. She worked it, needless to say. For 2016, the once universal doll is taking on three new styles. In March, Barbie will be available in petite, tall and curvy models setting a body positive example for girls (and boys!) everywhere.

March will see the introduction of – brace yourself – 33 new dolls, 30 new hair colours, 24 hair styles, 22 eye colours, 14 face sculpts, 7 skin tones AND 4 body types. To celebrate the news, we recount some of Barbie’s best collaborations in fashion since her launch in 1959.

Barbie x Stephen Jones

Barbie_SJ_Christmas_Tree

Our best girl got the angel treatment by Stephen Jones for Christmas 2011. The milliner reworked Barbz into a festive wonder for Selfridges in crimson and green and obviously with the most divine headgear. Glitzy miniature trees complete with baubles, twirling body-encasing Santa hats and even a microscopic robin all upped Barbie’s hat game for the 2011 holidays.

Barbie x Nasir Mazhar

Barbie_Nasir_Mazhar

Never one to miss out on trends, Barbie teamed up with London streetwear darling Nasir Mazhar in 2013. Sporting his signature caps and instantly recognisable namesake logo, we could have replicated any of Barbie’s looks from the mini-collection and been the best-dressed at fashion week.

Barbie x Comme Des Garçons

Barbie_CDG

Way back when in 2009 CDG launched their uber-ladylike Ms Roberts (Barbie’s full anme is Barbara Millicent Roberts, in case you didn’t already know). Wearing the brand’s jingle flower print, the doll was super exclusive, as we’d expect, sold only in Comme stores, Dover Street Market and Colette.

Barbie x Moschino

Warning: the jingle to this clip will stick in your head for days. 2015’s Moschino Barbie had every unabashedly bling accessory we’d ever dreamed of owning. “She’s the girl who has it all, nothing can stop her”, we like to think we’d be feeling unstoppable too if we had a custom 8-piece Moschino capsule collection. Also, how adorable is the little guy? Gender roles? What gender roles?

Barbie x Karl Lagerfeld

download

When Karl took on Barbie he basically dressed her up as himself, but we’ll forgive him, he is Karl Lagerfeld after all. All in black and white complete with sunnies and patent handbag, all Karl’s Barbie is missing is a tiny Choupette.

Barbie x Sophia Webster

Sophia-Webster-Barbie-Collection

Barbie and Sophia Webster collaborated last year to mark her new articulated ankles which allowed to wear flats – a good enough reason to celebrate if we ever heard one. Even better was the fact that you could buy your own Sophia Webster shoes in six adult styles and three children’s. Blonde bombshell soul-pop singer Kali Uchis was the face of the IRL collection, an all round dream.

Barbie x BLEACH London

B7

Four years ago Barbie got all technical on us with an innovative makeover system from BLEACH London. Using an inkjet printer and extensions, you could create your own coloured locks for Barbie at home. You could design absolutely anything online then print onto Barbie’s blonde base. We went through quite a few trying to work out what we wanted to do on ourselves…

Lo’s latest collection is inspired by fairytales, romance and all things dreamy.

SS16-RyanLo-0046-DS

Custom Collabs

Lo’s inspiration for his silhouettes has derived from well known fairytales and characters which is immediately visible – styles were loose and often off the shoulder, completed with cape-inspired jackets and hooded intarsia knits. The fairytale pieces were finished off with Thongthai jewellery and Sophia Webster shoes, made exclusively for Lo.

Sweetheart Fairytale

Looks were adorned with frills, bows and fabric roses. The printed fabrics were decorated with repeats of hearts or romantic cottages inspired by the classic tale of Hansel & Gretel. The soft fabrics came in a feminine palette of pinks, white and ‘valentine’ red and were layered with more autumnal hues of plum, yellow and forest green.

Sugar and spice

Lo’s clothes might not always be the most wearable but that’s part of the fun. Dressing up as a princess everyday, go on then. Our favourite item to become a totally unnecessary but essential part of our wardrobe? A white floral embellished bonnet-meets-cape, it goes with everything.

Money Fashion makes the world go round

Little did you know that the fashion industry contributed £26billion directly to the UK economy (GDP) in 2014, and this was up from £21billion in 2009.

Fashion is now at our fingertips every second of the day, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week thanks to the World Wide Web. Our spending online reached £10.7 billion in the UK in 2014, and those clever economists have predicted that this will nearly double by 2019 to reach £19billion a year.

Not only that, tastes are expensive , with luxury goods making up 2.2% of the UK’s GDP. £32.2billion contributed in sales from the British luxury goods industry in 2013, and this is set to go up to £51.1billion by 2019).

The hype of LFW leads people to put in £100 million worth of orders in on that one week each season.

We’re all about giving

There are 797,000 jobs supported by the UK fashion industry and 158,000 employees predicted to be hired by the luxury goods industry by 2019.

It’s an obsession

Every year £160million is spent on media coverage of London Fashion each season!

32,000 hours of London Fashion Week content is watched in the UK, and 28,000 hours of London Fashion Week content is watched in the US.

In the past two years there has been a 400% rise in consumers watching ‘fashion week’ content on YouTube (2012-2014)

During LFW SS15 196 countries watched the LFW live streams.

On Twitter, 94% of users aware of LFW and 74% have an interest in LFW

The #LFW tag was used on 121,000 images during London Fashion Week Autumn/Winter in February 2015.

The fun facts of fashion week

There were 15,000 Official LFW tote bags designed by Gareth Pugh in collaboration with Sunglass Hut this season.

An estimated 15,000 bottles of Evian Water are to be drunk at LFW SS16

…and 30,000 Lavazza espressos served with 200kg of Lavazza coffee beans used.

There are more than 3,000 Sunglass Hut stores in 45 countries globally celebrating London Fashion Week this year.

There will be 4 Sunglasses Hut ‘Punk it Up’ branded Official LFW buses to transport press, buyers and photographers between shows and presentations.

There will be a pop up ‘screening area’ in London’s Oxford Street Topshop dedicated to the live stream of Topshop Unique’s SS16 show

There will be 78 designers showing on schedule this season: 52 catwalk shows and 26 presentations.

Global brands include: Anya Hindmarch, Burberry Prorsum, Hunter Original, Paul Smith, Pringle of Scotland, Topshop Unique and Vivienne Westwood Red Label, Christopher Kane, David Koma, Emilia Wickstead, Jonathan Saunders, JW Anderson, Mary Katrantzou, Peter Pilotto, Simone Rocha, Sophia Webster and Thomas Tait.

Designers Ashish, Erdem, Gareth Pugh, Nicholas Kirkwood and Roksanda are celebrating their LFW 10th Anniversary!

Barbie

We’re kinda jel that the little girls and boys of 2015 get to dress their Barbies in flats. Our dolls only got to wear skyscraper heels with their freshly-cropped-with-the-kitchen-scissors hair, even if they weren’t feeling glam. Barbie is getting new articulated ankle feature, which sounds suitably revolutionary for one of the most iconic toys ever (sorry, Cindy). For this turning point in Barbie’s history, Sophia Webster has been selected to collaborate on a footwear capsule collection.

For children and big kids, the collection has six adult styles with two trainers, one flat sandals and three pairs of heels, including Sophia Webster’s signature Chiara sandal and three kids versions. The collection comes to Selfridges 27th August with a video following by Sharna Osborne starring our fave blonde, Kali Uchis as our very own real life Barbie.

“Loving the punk mohawk and fluffiness at Sibling! The show was a riot of colour and textures with latex alongside knitwear, and fluffy clouds of feathers embodying their woman. She was the kind of woman who’s backstage at all the best gigs, hanging out with the band.”

IMG_0306

“The finale at the David Koma show. I loved the ruffle sleeves and the colour palette of nudes, black, orange and blue. Some sparkly showstoppers closed the show with incredible beadwork.”

IMG_0317

“The Fashion Week brain-fade has arrived and the craziness starts to kick in at the Palmer//Harding presentation, just sitting in a corn field … standard!”

IMG_0321

“An impromptu fashion lunch with my partner-in-crime Mama Le Bon at Roka, just enough time for some sake in between the Topshop an Mary Katrantzou’s Shows.”

IMG_0311

“The Sophia Webster presentation is always amazingly styled and staged, and this season was no exception. Her fantastic bags and shoes were perfectly shown in the midst of a robotic, candy, dreamworld at the Welsh Chapel on Shaftesbury Avenue.”

IMG_0313

“One of the most interesting catwalks that I saw all of fashion week, pink foam pyramids formed the models’ Red Carpet. Luckily their flat-form Mary Jane’s were were on very capable feet, which were paired with midi fishtail skirts and some masterful, printed, colour blocking.”

IMG_0326

“Just two Models1 girls and DJ Duo called LeBonTong, doing our weird thing at the agency, which happens to be very conveniently situated for between show outfit changes.”

IMG_0316

“Becky Tong and I’s DJ agent Justin Girdler trying his hand at doing some show booking… multitalented.”

IMG_0309

“These little fluffy monsters at the Markus Lupfer presentation really REALLY wanted to come home with me. They told me so, sadly my smuggling skills weren’t up to much.”

IMG_0315

“Great sunglasses at the Markus Lupfer presentation, a 70s influence has been big in general this season.”

Coach

“I feel like this cute little fashion monster by the end of fashion week. This was one of the pieces at the Coach Future Contemporaries party at the Sackler Gallery.”

photo

“Giles was one of my other favourite shows of the week. Long billowing dresses drenched in dark fantasy were embroidered with colourful mushrooms, whilst ruffled chokers and cuffs, and patent leather bodices added to the gothic drama. The show was brilliantly cast with big names, and each model bringing some of her own personality to bring the show alive. It became more than just a fashion show, this was a fantastical story being told on a catwalk entrancing and entertaining everyone watching.”

IMG_0323

“Tell It To My Face!!! I think the lovely model and I agreed with this entirely. You go Sophia Webster, tell the world!”
