Your favourite childhood toy is getting a makeover and she’s never looked better.

4. Barbie x Sadie Williams 2014

Barbie was our only childhood companion. Cindy and Bratz dolls could never quite match up to our best pal and we always loved her, promise, even that time we were curious what she’d look like with a shaved head. She worked it, needless to say. For 2016, the once universal doll is taking on three new styles. In March, Barbie will be available in petite, tall and curvy models setting a body positive example for girls (and boys!) everywhere.

March will see the introduction of – brace yourself – 33 new dolls, 30 new hair colours, 24 hair styles, 22 eye colours, 14 face sculpts, 7 skin tones AND 4 body types. To celebrate the news, we recount some of Barbie’s best collaborations in fashion since her launch in 1959.

Barbie x Stephen Jones

Barbie_SJ_Christmas_Tree

Our best girl got the angel treatment by Stephen Jones for Christmas 2011. The milliner reworked Barbz into a festive wonder for Selfridges in crimson and green and obviously with the most divine headgear. Glitzy miniature trees complete with baubles, twirling body-encasing Santa hats and even a microscopic robin all upped Barbie’s hat game for the 2011 holidays.

Barbie x Nasir Mazhar

Barbie_Nasir_Mazhar

Never one to miss out on trends, Barbie teamed up with London streetwear darling Nasir Mazhar in 2013. Sporting his signature caps and instantly recognisable namesake logo, we could have replicated any of Barbie’s looks from the mini-collection and been the best-dressed at fashion week.

Barbie x Comme Des Garçons

Barbie_CDG

Way back when in 2009 CDG launched their uber-ladylike Ms Roberts (Barbie’s full anme is Barbara Millicent Roberts, in case you didn’t already know). Wearing the brand’s jingle flower print, the doll was super exclusive, as we’d expect, sold only in Comme stores, Dover Street Market and Colette.

Barbie x Moschino

Warning: the jingle to this clip will stick in your head for days. 2015’s Moschino Barbie had every unabashedly bling accessory we’d ever dreamed of owning. “She’s the girl who has it all, nothing can stop her”, we like to think we’d be feeling unstoppable too if we had a custom 8-piece Moschino capsule collection. Also, how adorable is the little guy? Gender roles? What gender roles?

Barbie x Karl Lagerfeld

download

When Karl took on Barbie he basically dressed her up as himself, but we’ll forgive him, he is Karl Lagerfeld after all. All in black and white complete with sunnies and patent handbag, all Karl’s Barbie is missing is a tiny Choupette.

Barbie x Sophia Webster

Sophia-Webster-Barbie-Collection

Barbie and Sophia Webster collaborated last year to mark her new articulated ankles which allowed to wear flats – a good enough reason to celebrate if we ever heard one. Even better was the fact that you could buy your own Sophia Webster shoes in six adult styles and three children’s. Blonde bombshell soul-pop singer Kali Uchis was the face of the IRL collection, an all round dream.

Barbie x BLEACH London

B7

Four years ago Barbie got all technical on us with an innovative makeover system from BLEACH London. Using an inkjet printer and extensions, you could create your own coloured locks for Barbie at home. You could design absolutely anything online then print onto Barbie’s blonde base. We went through quite a few trying to work out what we wanted to do on ourselves…

With 2015 being nothing but a distant memory, we look ahead to the new year and shine a spotlight on 10 musicians who are set to make 2016 very special.

Kali Uchis

In 2015 Columbian born singer-songwriter Kali Uchis made waves across the internet when she released the critically acclaimed Por Vida EP and dropped the undeniably great track “Ridin’ Round”. 2016 is going to be even bigger with Uchis set to release her debut album. If her previous work is anything to go by, it’ll be major.

Gallant

Gallant is an incredibly rare talent, possessing one of the finest voices in R&B and the ability to craft unforgettable lyrics. It’s also hard to pinpoint Gallant’s references; he constructs a musical world that is entirely his own, a dreamlike and hazy soundscape. Gallant has received plaudits from all corners of the industry and his track “Weight In Gold” was the first “world exclusive” on Apple’s Beats 1. Expect huge things in 2016.

Sofi de la Torre

Spanish singer-songwriter Sofi de la Torre is not just responsible for one of 2015’s finest EPs but is also spearheading a movement that she’s dubbed “#PopDoneRight”. Sofi de la Torre started out producing alt-folk records but made the switch to pop in 2014 with the release of “Vermillion” and she hasn’t looked back. Her 2015 EP Mess contains lush pop bangers that are artfully produced and perfectly performed. She makes it all seem effortless.

NAO

Hackney based singer-songwriter NAO fuses disparate genres to create a sound that is totally her own. NOA’s talents have attracted the attention of a number of musical’s most notable names and featured on Disclosure’s sophomore album Caracal.

Kloe

Glasgow-based singer Kloe cites Stevie Nicks, Alanis Morissette and Taylor Swift as influences and makes brilliant alt-pop. Aged just 19, Kloe already has a sting of electro-pop gems under her belt and is set to become your new favourite popstar in 2016.

Dua Lipa

Singer-songwriter Dua Lipa is an utterly captivating performer with a hypnotic voice. Debut tracks “New Love” and “Be The One” were amongst the year’s finest and Lipa rightfully earned a place on the list for BBC’s Sound of 2016. We’re beyond excited to hear what she has planned next.

Tiggs Da Author

Tanzania-born, London-based performer Tiggs Da Author is set to have a breakout year. Tiggs Da Author blends old school jazz and soul but is no throwback artist. His sound is not only immensely fun but fresh. The Bobby Bland-sampling “Georgia” was one of the stand out tracks of 2015 and the perfect introduction to a unique voice.

Anne-Marie

Anne-Marie has paid her dues. Having spent the last two years on the road with Rudimental, Anne-Marie is ready to become a pop force in her own right. Anne-Marie’ place on this list was assured with the release of her track “Boy” which was pop perfection. Ann-Marie is currently in the studio working on her debut album.

Fletcher

Fletcher has laid the groundwork for what will be an incredible 2016. Her anthemic track “War Paint” became the #1 most shared Spotify track on social media and to date has been streamed over 10 million times. What’s more impressive is that Fletcher has found the time to become the next pop superstar while being a fulltime NYU student.

Mabel

Mabel, the child of the legendary Neneh Cherry and producer Cameron McVey, is extraordinarily talent. Her songwriting is more mature than her 19 years would suggest and her tough look belies music that is tender, beautiful and earnest.

Pop’s edgiest new princess gives us a rundown of her ultimate 10 tracks that never really got the credit they rightly deserved.

We’ve been a massive fan of Jayelldee ever since we were introduced to the Welsh native via previous bangers such as ‘You Got It Comin‘ and ‘Forever‘, which much to our disappointment seemed to have vanished from the internet all together!

Fast forward a couple of years, and after a brief hiatus, a couple of notable collaborations (Wiley’s ‘Lickin’ Down The Spot and Sub Focus’s ‘Out Of Reach‘), Jayelldee AKA Jenna Dickens, returns in force with one of the most impressive crossover hits, this side of the Summer.

New cut ‘Kill Ur Cool’ is an insight into what is expected from the forthcoming EP, which has been produced by Nick Hodgson, who most recently has worked his magic on tracks with The Vaccines. Comparisons to Charli XCX, vintage La Roux and Chvrches are lazy – Jayelldee is fresh, distinctive and consistently cool and we can’t wait to see what the year ahead holds for one of the UK’s most promising popstars. We got Jayelldee to choose 10 tracks that she feels should have been even bigger hits.

Little Simz – Dead Body

“She is one of my favourite new artists. I love her honesty and the passion in her lyrics”.

Years & Years – Desire

“I am such a big fan of Years & Years. What a tune! I don’t think it gets enough props cos of the obvious hit ‘King’.

Kali Uchis – Loner

“This girl is sooooo sick!! I love the sincerity in her songs”.

Angel Haze – Werkin Girls

“This is another favourite artist of mine. Her songs are so genuine and fearlessly honest, I rate a lot of her tracks but this was the one of the first that I hear from her”.

Yelle – A Cause Des Garcons

“This is such a tune! I just can’t sit still when this comes on”.

M.I.A – Bucky Done Gun

“I’ve been a massive fan of hers from the very start. ‘Pull Up The People’ is another one of my all-time favourites. Her lyrics used to amaze me when I was younger”.

Stromae – Papaoutai

“I love Stromae so much. I love how he manages to make really catchy pop songs while still keeping really beautiful and meaningful lyrics”.

Dizzee Rascal – Stand Up Tall

This was a track that we would all play as a kid. I would listen to his songs everyday, followed by Elvis and The Sex Pistols. I love his energy and the raw truth in his lyrics I could really relate to coming from a council estate back home with nothing to do but trouble myself”

MGMT – Kids

“TUNE. Enough said really. Should have been a bigger hit”.

Dragonette – I Get Around

“I still can’t understand why this isn’t a classic pop hit. How is this track still as awesome today as it was when it was first released!”

Kill Ur Cool‘ is out now – check it our here:

Barbie

We’re kinda jel that the little girls and boys of 2015 get to dress their Barbies in flats. Our dolls only got to wear skyscraper heels with their freshly-cropped-with-the-kitchen-scissors hair, even if they weren’t feeling glam. Barbie is getting new articulated ankle feature, which sounds suitably revolutionary for one of the most iconic toys ever (sorry, Cindy). For this turning point in Barbie’s history, Sophia Webster has been selected to collaborate on a footwear capsule collection.

For children and big kids, the collection has six adult styles with two trainers, one flat sandals and three pairs of heels, including Sophia Webster’s signature Chiara sandal and three kids versions. The collection comes to Selfridges 27th August with a video following by Sharna Osborne starring our fave blonde, Kali Uchis as our very own real life Barbie.
