Join the G-Star Raw denim gang for AW15. How do you wear yours?

Shot by Ellen von Unwerth, G-Star Raw’s latest campaign features the coolest gang we want to join. Marching along clad in denim, the campaign shows G-Star Raw’s wide selection, asking how do you wear yours? Wide, loose, low, baggy, tight, they’ve got a cut for everyone.

Top of our wishlist is the brand favourite, the G-Star Elwood jean, the first style constructed using the 3D Denim method that’s been rising in popularity since its release in 1996.

Snapping the freshest of emerging faces, Camilla Christensen, Eden Bristowe, Liam Gardner, Sang Woo Kim, Karmay Ngai, Michael Sharp, and Zanna van Vorstenbosch all star in von Unwerth’s campaign.

From leather motorcycle riding-gear origins, to cultural frontrunners and label we are all obsessing about – Chrome Hearts has come a long way since show start in 1988. Mastering handmade jewellery, a clothing line, eyewear, leather goods and handcrafted furniture, defining the brainchild of Richard and Laurie Lynn Stark is no easy feat.

Having opened their first free standing store in New York City in ’96, it only took three years before stores in Tokyo and L.A. followed and since then they have garnered quite the cult following. With a string of collaborations under their belt (including a crystal collection with Baccarat, a partnership with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation and design ventures with Comme des Garçons, Rick Owens and Gareth Pugh), their most recent accolade comes in the shape of their concept store in Miami’s vibrant Design District. And what better time to launch this space than during Art Basel?

Creativity runs through the building, with Miami’s second Fahey/Klein Gallery space located upstairs currently showcasing 20th century works by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Herb Ritts, Horst P. Horst, Ellen von Unwerth and Patrick Demarchelier, to name a few. Take a look at the photos, but trust us – a visit is essential.

From Kaiser Karl to Super Schiffer and Heidi Klum, we chart seven of the most influential figures in German fashion following their World Cup win

After a month of evenings in front of the TV, the German team won their fourth World Cup on Sunday evening hailing them the first European team to win the World Cup in South America. So whilst we’ll miss watching baby faced Manuel Neuer and impeccably Aryan-eyed Andre Schurrle, today we’ve cast our eyes on Germany for a different reason – fashion. Here we take a look at some of Germany’s most influential fashion figures from Karl Lagerfeld to Heidi Klum.

TONI GARRN

Since being scouted at Germany’s 2006 Fifa World Cup, Hamburg born Victoria’s Secret model Toni Garrn hasn’t looked back. After signing with Calvin Klein at fifteen alongside best friend Karlie Kloss, her career has gone from strength to strength, becoming an official Angel for Victoria’s secret in 2012. She also happens to be Leonardo DiCaprio’s girlfriend. Some girls have all the glück!

ELLEN VON UNWERTH

Hailing from Frankfurt Ellen von Unwerth got her first taste of fashion as a model, before moving behind the camera lens. Her first high profile works were the infamous Guess campaigns of the ‘90s, which stared fellow German Claudia Schiffer amongst others. She still remains at the pinnacle of pushing the boundaries of female sexuality through her strong and glamorous imagery.

JIL SANDER

Despite the fact that the eponymous founder is no longer with her namesake label, Jil Sander remains a stalwart at fashion week. Founded in the late ‘60s in Hamburg, Jil suffered a shaky start, but her minimalist designs in modern tailoring saw the label flourish in the ‘80s and ‘90s, leading to her coronation as the Queen of Less. Awarded the Verdienstorden der Bundesrepublik Deutschland for her fashion achievements, the notoriously private Fräulein last left the company in October 2013, and is no doubt spending her time listening to her favourite German composer Bach.

CLAUDIA SCHIFFER

Spotted at a local discothèque in Düsseldorf at the age of seventeen, Claudia Schiffer’s Bridgette Bardot beauty soon catapulted her to supermodel status cementing her as one of the original ‘90s supers. Globally recognised through her campaigns with Guess, she soon became the face of Chanel. Now married to English film director Matthew Vaughn, she is raising her three children in the English countryside, a world away from her early aspirations of becoming a lawyer.

MARLENE DIETRICH

Born in Schoneberg in 1901, Marlene Dietrich is now deemed part of the German capital Berlin. Becoming an iconic actress in Hollywood in the 1940s, having received American citizenship in 1939, despite her distance from her German roots, and the tension that endured between her and her home country after her move to the US, the mix of androgyny in her style, which was quite unheard of at the time, and her air of glamorous mystery which she evoked are thought to be a result of her strict Bavarian childhood.

HEIDI KLUM

Hailing from a small town just outside Cologne, Heidi Klum won a modelling contract before she had even left school, and before long her face and body became synonymous with the annual Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue and Victoria’s Secret runway show. Having made the successful transition into television presenting and producing, including receiving an Emmy nomination in 2008 for her work on ‘project Runway’, she was given American citizenship the same year, although she holds it dually and proudly with her German passport.

KARL LAGERFELD

The ultimate Kaiser of fashion is Hamburg born Karl Lagerfeld. There isn’t enough time in the day to reel off his achievements or his influence, but his contribution to fashion is like no other. Beginning his career at Balmain in the 1950’s; and now heading up Chanel, Fendi and his namesake label, his instantly recognisable image and artistic talent is constantly pushing the preconceived ideals of fashion. From sending leggings and flat sandals down the couture runway, to having a pregnant pride close the most recent Chanel show, this German gentleman is definitely doing his homeland proud.

Ellen Von Unwerth’s newest work, “Do Not Disturb”, is a salacious behind-the-scenes story collage via Motel Americana. We spoke to the feted photographer about her typically reference friendly collection – which showcases at London’s Michael Hoppen gallery from Friday.

Describe “Do Not Disturb” for us.

I am always fascinated by the life that is going on behind closed doors in hotels. People are so close together, but still in totally different worlds. Especially in America, where characters are more extreme and eccentric.

Where was it shot? How do you usually go about unearthing such amazing locations?

It was shot in the Madonna Inn; a Honey moon motel close to Santa Barbara. Every room has a different theme and the decoration is extremely over the top. I always
look for places that have character – which is unfortunately more and more hard to find. Everything seems to become beige and grey.

How did you go about sourcing the clothes? Research for it must have been intensive…

I came across lots of interesting people during my stay in LA: actors, models, burlesque dancers, friends. They were very inspiring and it was easy to pin a character on them, to play a role in my “Do Not Disturb” story.

The set pieces are extremely filmic. Which directors or movies inspired the series?

I wanted to give it a bit of a David Lynch feeling: strange characters, glamourous but weird.

What project/s are you currently working on?

I am working on so many projects, there are so many things I want to do. For the moment I have a book coming out in the fall with Taschen and I am preparing to direct a movie in the near future.

Do Not Disurb: June 21 – August 31, 2012 at Michael Hoppen Gallery in London
