Ned Franc and Jon Moody’s joint musical project is as vibrant and enthralling as ever before on their dazzling third full-length opus, Chewing The Fat. The duo fill an otherworldly sonic space, one of unassuming hedonism and colourful affection, and this new album pushes their musical disposition deeper into their own unique landscape. LCD Soundsystem – “Losing My Edge”
Understated, honest, raw and cynical. Hearing this tune live was the beginning of writing Chewing the Fat for us in many ways.
Jockstrap – “Concrete Over Water”
A breathtaking and daring piece of music that takes you on a real journey. A stunning production that we found very inspiring when writing tracks like “Light You Bring” and “Square Pegs in Round Holes”.
Fcukers – “Bon Bon”
Exciting new discovery last year. A fresh yet familiar sound with tonnes of attitude and taste. Yes please thank you very much.
Talking Heads – “Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)”
Love the scratchy guitars and big bold bass pops against the smooth long vocal lines. I get the impression James Murphy from LCD may have been a Talking Heads fan?!
Yannis & The Yaw, Tony Allen, Yannis – “Under The Strikes”
A gift from BBC Radio 6 one morning in the car on the way into the studio. Killer riff, undeniable groove courtesy of the late Tony Allen, and a great vocal idea and delivery on top of it all. Jobs a good’n.
Junior Kimbrough – “Feels So Good #2”
I was late to the great Junior Kimbrough but once I found his music I’ve been hooked ever since. The groove here is undeniable, it just makes you want to get up and get your knees going.
Geordie Greep – “Holy Holy”
I was a big Black Midi fan so when I heard Geordie Greep was stepping out on his own I was excited to see what would come. His debut solo album The New Sound is amazing. Eclectic, daring and both musically and lyrically very inspiring. This tune for me is the standout and the video to accompany it equally amazing.
Thool – “Honesty”
One of my brothers is one half of this amazing duo. One of the best live shows if you’re lucky enough to catch one of their rare performances. Also check out banger “Tepeu” if you get a chance!
James Brown – “Kansas City”
James Brown is one of Franc Moody’s biggest influences. I could literally pick any one of his tunes but this version of Kansas City swings like nowt else so makes my list. We have a rule that we have to write one shuffle per album in a bid to get something approaching like the example here. Naturally we fall short…
Los Hijos del sol – “Cariñito”
A Cumbia classic, I love the amount of percussion present here to create this amazing hypnotic groove. Not to mention the wonderful melodic guitar playing. Very inspiring.
