And now for the interview…

What do you do to wind down when you are not acting?
I am a huge advocate for adding to our overall mental wealth, so I make time to partake in the things that bring me great pleasure such as socialising with close friends, cooking (and eating), spending time outside, reading, physical training/yoga…the list goes on.

How did you first gain an interest in acting and the arts?
It runs in my family, so I felt an immediate affinity with it from as young as I can remember. To quote Shakespeare “I see the world feelingly” and so I think acting was an extension of that, as it gave me an opportunity to explore my interest in humans and their emotions.

What drives your passion to perform?
I am an empath, so the ability to portray characters in a story that others may be able to relate to, or be able to escape into, gives me a great sense of purpose. Whether the character is fictitious or is based on a living or was living person, any representation created by an artist stems from human existence in the real world. I think the opportunity to touch another individuals pain, without permanently claiming it as one’s own is very powerful for both artist and observer. We are all multitudes, and I think acting provides a great opportunity to lean into each and every facet of our personalities, we literally get to step into another person’s shoes.

Who do you consider to be your idols?
Anyone who fully embodies what they do whilst maintaining their own sense of authenticity outside of their work.

You first appear in British TV shows like Doc Martin and Endeavour. How did those experiences shape your career and approach?
Every day, every character, every job provides lessons, some of which may not even be clear to us at the time. I thrive most when I am learning. So I question everything, without attaching to an immediate answer, and that has shaped the way I approach my work and my life too. As Rainer Maria Rilke wisely said “Be patient toward all that is unresolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves… live the question now perhaps you will gradually without noticing it live along some distant day into the answer”

You’re now doing huge things, outside of just the UK too. How did you manage to get these opportunities?
Honestly I feel so incredibly humbled by all of the opportunities that have presented themselves and come my way. I put huge trust in the universe to place me where I am supposed to be, and to never attach to destinations but rather focus on enjoying the journey to wherever I am supposed to end up. I have wonderful teams on both sides of the Atlantic, so I wouldn’t be achieving any of it without them.

What would your advice be to any budding actor who is looking to break into the wider industry?
Again, it’s a bit of a cliché, but trust the process, and if you have the drive and ambition to grow and learn, perseverance is key to success. Observe and embrace every aspect of life so that it may continue to feed your compulsion to tell stories and portray others. It is said that, “In school we get the lesson, and take the test, in life we get the test, and then learn the lesson”. As tempting as it may be to take shortcuts, so much is to be gained from exploration. There is no finish line, you are in full progress, just keep going; and always remember, there is and only ever will be one you. No one else can offer all that you encompass.

Talk us through your role in the upcoming blockbuster Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves?
I will have to leave the film to do the talking on that one I’m afraid.

What is it about the role in Shadow And Bone that you love?
Genya has been a gift to play. Although ultimately a victim, she does not let it define her. She is an ambassador for owning the space she exists in, which I think is so important in this world, regardless of our history or upbringing. It is vital to lead with your name tag, not with a shame tag. Like us all, she is on a journey, and although she may find herself and her loyalties in conflict under the hands of those more powerful than her, I think Genya demonstrates that she can ultimately stay true to herself not despite, but in spite of her struggles. Pain isn’t a choice, but suffering can be.

How has it been to be a regular in a huge Netflix production?
It has been an exciting journey which naturally has challenged me, and provided me with opportunities to continue to expand my personal growth. It is such a privilege to be able to be part of a hugely gifted ensemble, on both sides of the camera and production, on such a globally accessible stage where we have the ability to reach so many people who are able to relate to the stories or to suspend themselves in a world outside of their own reality.

You’ve appeared in a few fantasy-leaning productions now, what is it about the genre that entices you?
Fantasy is both timeless and limitless, redolent of our imagination. I love how these fantastical worlds encapsulate the magic of human creativity – we do not have to be dictated or restricted by who we are, what we do, or how old we are, which in itself is a beautifully timeless and limitless facet of human existence. I love the potential juxtaposition of the intimacy and emotionality of the characters, against the epic backdrop of the fantastical landscapes of the world they inhabit. Shooting fantasy also forces one to have to really suspend one’s own disbelief during the process of filming, in order for the audience to be able to ultimately suspend theirs.

What else is to come from you?
I’ll let the universe decide that.

What are your dreams and ambitions?
To continue to experience life in all its glorious unpredictability without attaching to outcome, and whilst remaining true to myself.
