From Marilyn Monroe to Marlon Brando, the National Portrait Gallery stages its first major exhibition dedicated to Cecil Beaton’s era-defining fashion photography.
A singular force in 20th-century image-making, Cecil Beaton’s legacy is impossible to overstate. This autumn, the National Portrait Gallery celebrates his trailblazing contribution to fashion photography with an expansive exhibition that traces how “the king of Vogue” turned the happening form into high art, one decadent portrait at a time thanks to his unique aesthetic blend of Edwardian stage glamour and the elegance of a new age, tinged with an English sensibility.
Featuring over 250 original works from the self-taught photographer, from sketches and letters to rarely-seen photographs and costumes, the exhibition has been curated by photographic historian and Vogue Contributing Editor Robin Muir. “Cecil Beaton needs little introduction as a photographer, fashion illustrator, triple Oscar-winning costume designer, social caricaturist, elegant writer of essays and occasionally waspish diaries, stylist, decorator, dandy and party goer,” she notes. “Beaton’s impact spans the worlds of fashion, photography and design. Unquestionably one of the leading visionary forces of the British twentieth century, he also made a lasting contribution to the artistic lives of New York, Paris and Hollywood.”
Highlights include portraits of Salvador Dalí, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Margaret, and Queen Elizabeth II, subjects rendered through Beaton’s idiosyncratic, imaginative lens.
The retrospective spans Beaton’s early experiments with his first camera, his Vogue masterpieces, the Parisian jazz-age scene, distinguished royal portraits, wartime service, culminating in the high fashion opulence of the 1950s, and his remarkable sets and costumes for My Fair Lady. A portal into the fantasy and elegance of a star-lit world, Cecil Beaton’s Fashionable World is both a tribute to his vision and a reminder of how he forever changed the way we see style.
