Marking a signature sound synonymous with whimsical sonic stories, Mei playfully blends endearing lyricism with charming melodies. Her latest release, “Tho I’m a Tortoise,” follows the enchanting “Side Quest Song” and showcases Mei’s intrinsic ability to craft fairytale-inspired tracks. This song offers a unique twist on the classic tale of The Tortoise and The Hare.
Discussing the inspiration behind the track, Madilyn shares, “I wrote ‘Tho I’m a Tortoise’ to reassure myself that it’s okay to move at different paces and not excel at everything. It’s even okay to be bad at things as long as you enjoy them.” Reflecting on her own experiences, Mei explains, “Growing up, I loved music, art, and literature, but I was almost always the worst in my class at math, science, and sports. I also had a speech impediment, which made me feel embarrassed and incapable. Ironically, I now relate more to the hare, feeling unable to slow down, succeeding in my passions but burning out in the process, and feeling unsatisfied with my progress.”
The animated music video perfectly complements Mei’s style, enhancing the storybook ambiance and bringing the track’s characters and themes to life visually. Sharing a personal message with her listeners, Madilyn says, “I hope I wrote something that reminds everyone that whether you feel behind, ahead, or right where you’re supposed to be, it’s okay. Everyone is different, everyone’s background and journey are different, and life isn’t a race. Even though people will make you feel like it is, it really isn’t.”
