JAXYN LETHE – “I AM I DON’T KNOW”

Equipped with lush soundscapes and vulnerable lyricism, the rising talent unveils enigmatic new 5-track EP, “I am I don’t know”.

Baltimore’s own singer-producer, Jaxyn Lethe, is poised to conquer 2024 with her latest project “I am I don’t know,” a vibrant indie-electronic EP that’s sure to get you moving.

Completely self-written, produced, mixed, and mastered, Jaxyn showcases her diverse talents in this collection of tracks, which exude a DIY “bedroom-pop” vibe while expertly exploring various electronic styles. From the nostalgic indie-sleaze vibes of “So Much Fun” to the hypnotic blend of breathy vocals and pulsating percussion in “Techno Beats,” and the stripped-down allure of the title track “I am I don’t know,” Jaxyn proves herself to be a dynamic force in the electronic music scene. With this release, Jaxyn not only establishes herself as a force to be reckoned with in the electronic/pop/dance genre but also leaves listeners eagerly anticipating what she will bring to the table next.

Explaining the process of pulling together the song and EP, alongside the meaning behind the enigmatic title, Jaxyn explains “The EP is a collection of the best electronic songs I’ve written in the past four years. Some of the songs are older, I wrote ‘White Noise’ and ‘R2N’ (Road to Nowhere) when I was 16. ‘Techno Beats’ I wrote last year, and ‘So Much Fun’ and ‘I am I don’t know’ I wrote in the last 6-7 months. I had a collection of electronic music that I’d made but no glue holding it together in a cohesive project. That was until I wrote ‘I am I don’t know’. When I wrote that song, I knew that I wanted it to be the title of the EP, and then the programming started making more sense.

I wrote ‘I am I don’t know’ on a vacation to Croatia with my family while I was falling asleep. Lots of creatives will understand the moment where a good idea is zapped into your brain at an inconvenient hour, and you just have to make it immediately so you don’t forget what the idea was. I rushed out of bed at 2am with my laptop and key-typed the midi melody and drum beat of the song, while having the phrase “I am I don’t know” running in the back of my mind. I thought it perfectly captured how it felt to be in a relationship where someone doesn’t value you as much as you do them, but also how I had internalized the devaluing so I couldn’t be myself anymore. I imagine the title to mean both “I am ‘I don’t know'”, like someone doesn’t know what you mean to them, but also “I am I don’t know” when you don’t know who you are to yourself.”
