LARA SOMOGYI – “RUNNING UP THAT HILL”

The Los Angeles-based harpist and contemporary classical performer-composer unveils hypnotising visuals for her Kate Bush cover.

Renowned for her mastery of electronic sounds and love for pedal effects, Lara has skillfully crafted a distinctive sonic identity for the harp. The year 2023 marked a pinnacle for this multifaceted artist as she unveiled her enchanting debut album, “!,” followed by the captivating expansion, appropriately named “! (Expanded).” Building on the tremendous success of her ethereal rendition of Kate Bush’s timeless hit, “Running Up That Hill,” Lara now treats us to visually stunning, minimalist accompaniments for the track.

Set entirely within an intimate, secluded room, the video immerses viewers in Lara’s world, where she gracefully sits beside her signature harp. By isolating the viewer with Lara and the harp, the message is clear: the track and visuals radiate the allure of the harp and Lara’s undeniable talent. The camera gracefully pans across the space, capturing the mesmerizing spectacle of Lara’s hands gracefully dancing across the harp’s strings. This visual journey not only fosters a profound connection with the music but also underscores the blossoming rhythm of “Running Up That Hill.”

Speaking on her admiration for the track and creative process to impart her own sound on the piece, Lara says “Elated to share my version of Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill. I’ve been a big admirer of her music for quite some time and creating a version of this song on harp was such a joy. I worked a lot with the melody, deconstructed and reimagined fragments within it using extended harp techniques to form flourishing arpeggios, harmonics, and rhythmic elements using different sections of the strings. I wanted to weave layers of these elements of the harp, glitch fx, and reverb to paint a sound that juxtaposed the beauty and message of the original, and honor that with the harp.”
