VIDEO PREMIERE: CHINA BOWLS — “FIRST LIGHT”

We are thrilled to premiere the rising artist’s new music video, a clever and artistic representation of the song’s profound subject matter, using a dress as a physical manifestation.

Recently announced as a recipient of this year’s PRS “Women Make Music” fund, the emerging singer-songwriter China Bowls has been having an exciting year. Blending neo soul, blues, jazz, and hip hop, she brings her mesmerising stories to life through enchanting vocals, clever lyrics, and infectious melodies.

Released earlier this year, her debut EP “First Light” has been captivating listeners across the UK and beyond. Now, its title track has a new music video. The song, which was first released in January, explores the idea of rose-coloured glasses and romanticising the past in a manner that causes harm to oneself. The video, directed by Misha Vertkin — a longtime collaborator and friend of China’s — centres around a dress that serves as a physical representation of this idea. Starting off small, the dress grows and grows until it is utterly overwhelming, trapping China inside of its magnitude. Designed and created by China herself, it shows the artist’s multi-disciplinary approach, as she merges music with fashion for an all-encompassing creative vision.

Speaking about the dress, China says: “I used over 160 metres of fabric and made it over many months. Ironically, I hadn’t anticipated it taking over my life (and my room) so much! It became the visual language of the EP with layers of the dress featuring in the artwork for different singles — becoming representative of different states of mind.”

We are so excited to premiere with you China Bowls’ new video for “First Light”.
