Born in Peckham, South-East London, Damson Idris skyrocketed to fame with his starring role in John Singleton’s crime drama Snowfall. As the show comes to an end, he enters into a new stage of his career — involving Formula 1. With an upcoming role alongside Brad Pitt in Apple Original Films’ Formula 1 film, Idris joined Heineken at the 2023 Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix last month. Directed by Joseph Kosinski and featuring seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton, the film follows Brad Pitt’s character as he comes out of retirement to compete against a young driver, played by Damson.

We speak with Damson Idris about his involvement with Heineken, his love of F1, and the experience of moving from a beloved TV series to a highly anticipated film…

How did you first get involved with Heineken for F1?
I have always loved Heineken since my soccer university days. When I found out they were heavily involved in F1 and that I’d be attending the Miami race, it was a no-brainer to collaborate with them.

What was the experience like?
The day was full of excitement. We got to hang out with the Red Bull crew and meet the team. I had my nephew with me also who has never experienced F1, so Heineken really showed us how to do a race weekend the right way.

Personally, have you always been an F1 fan or when did you start to get into the sport?
I first got into F1 in Budapest in 2019. I watched Lewis Hamilton win. Ever since then I’ve been hooked on the sport and amazed at how the game has changed from the past to now.

What drew you to the character in the forthcoming F1 film?
I play a F1 driver in my next movie. My love for F1 was a huge reason for wanting to be a part of the film and of course the opportunity to work with the many amazing players involved.

You spent the past six years on a beloved TV series. How does working on a film differ?
Working in TV was an amazing experience. We got to collaborate with different creatives every episode and develop a cult following that supported us for six seasons. Equally I have always wanted to work on the big screen. A movie of this magnitude is going to connect with people across the globe. That’s the reason I wanted to be an actor.

Is there anything else you’re looking forward to in the near future?
Hopefully more amazing moments with Heineken, Formula 1 and of course, the great Wonderland Magazine.
