Founded by the Canadian duo of vocalist/guitarist Stefanie Blondal-Johnson and drummer Jodi Dunlop in Winnipeg, Manitoba, indie band Mise En Scene combines nostalgia-infused rock with dream pop. Incredibly in-sync with one another, exemplifying each other’s strengths and individuality in a beautiful medley, it is abundantly clear that Stef and Jodi are best friends. Through captivating lyrics and soundscapes, they explore pain, joy, and all the emotions between.
Their upcoming EP, Reality Bites, will showcase the band’s wide breadth of musical influences and styles. Capturing a variety of emotions, each track touches on a different lesson learned, coming together to form a cohesive yet expansive project.
Following the title track, “Burn Out” is the second single off of the upcoming EP. The track is an explosive, enthralling, and moody display of awakening within a toxic relationship. Grounded by a strong beat, Stef’s vocals will take you on a ride, and you won’t want to get off. With all-encompassing and relatable lyrics — and a light-hearted, groovy music video — the track feels both personal and universal. Discussing the song, Mise En Scene explains, “‘Burn Out’ is about finding yourself in a garbage relationship. You can’t believe you are living as your lowest self with a person who drags you down.”
While its subject matter might mention someone dragging them down, the song itself will get you on your feet. Turn the volume up and let it entrance you.
