Courtney Govan is yet another impressive pop star looking to make her way towards stardom. Govan’s vocal ability is striking and textured, whilst her songwriting is thoughtful and reflective, amalgamating into a commercially viable and authentic sound. After making waves back in 2020 with Feelings, her debut EP drop, the queer pop star fully announced herself to the wider industry with her intoxicating hit single “out of the blue” last year. 2022 was a burgeoning year for the singer-songwriter, with several other successful singles.

She has now returned for her first single of the year, “at least”, the kaleidoscopic ballad that twists and turns itself into a stunning climax. Govan illustrates the brevity of her vocal talent with one of her strongest performances to date, whilst lyrically it is a tale of heartbreak, written about the unexpected loss of her closet friend, who broke off their eight year relationship with no warning via text. Despite the negative themes, the song feels hopeful, and tinged by nostalgia rather than pessimism and longing.

Powerful and uncompromising, Govan looks set to rise up the busy food chain of US pop.
