After garnering millions of listens on her highly-praised debut EP “Before” which came out over the summer, néomí’s new single ‘Red Balloon’ is a stunning comeback for the Suriname-Dutch singer-songwriter. And, that’s not all — she’s also unveiling a beautiful new video to accompany it; a compilation of stunning videography through which the artist, Neomi Speelman, who is captured holding a red balloon, traverses industrial infrastructure and green spaces illuminated by divine natural lighting.

Whilst “Red Balloon” is laced with the artist’s classic touch of warm and heartfelt textures, it’s simultaneously nuanced with darker undertones; this is what really sets the track apart from her latest EP. Lasting the duration of the song, néomí embarks on an explorative journey whereby she reflects on time, speed, and human connection through deep emotive poeticism. Not to mention, it yields a chorus motif that’s impossible to forget.

Shot against Berlin’s industrial backdrop, néomí shares that the video was actually meant to be filmed in Paris. But after being invited to perform on stage with HEAVN in Wolfsburg at the last minute, she had to switch gears. All was not lost — as she and her team of videographers (and best friends), Stijn Mulder and Annarose Clayton, decided to head to Berlin. “Stijn knew the city quite well and it had that industrial vibe we were looking for,” shares Speelman. The video was: “created with love, and a broken heart, but one day we’ll stay up I’m sure.”

Despite being too young, néomí got into a music school in Amsterdam where she nurtured her raw talent and potential. Over the four years to follow, she honed her song writing and sound; influenced by the likes of Bon Iver, Bob Dylan and Ben Howard. “Their lyrics are outstanding and insanely beautiful. I don’t think they make songs, but they make art, poems”, says Speelman about her trio of inspirations.

There’s plenty more to come from néomí as, since signing with [PIAS], she’s pre-recorded dozens of songs that will soon be uncaged. Not to mention, come January, she’ll be performing at Eurosonic Noordeslag Festival, Netherlands, in January 2023. Watch this space.
