Upon listening to Jenny Kern’s new EP, “Your Hear Knows”, you would be forgiven for assuming that she’d always devoted her time exclusively to crafting elegant dream pop and indie. However, the Candian artist, now residing in Brooklyn, actually began her career in the TV industry, and what’s more, behind the camera rather than in front. Gaining foundational experience at NBC as a pager, Kern later worked for lauded filmmakers Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig, and latterly as a producer in the film and TV industry. However, in 2018 she decided to pivot, or perhaps more accurately, simply turn to what she knows best, becoming a full-time musician. The latest spoils of her endeavours are the deftly told, diaristic five tracks of new EP “Your Heart Knows”.

Finding defiance in candour, Kern touches on everything from anxiety, depression, ageing, relationships, and gratitude on the project. “I think most people assume that my music skews toward lyrical sadness but I always try to inject a hopeful undercurrent to it,” she explains. “I want people to feel like there’s hope and just because something feels heavy doesn’t mean it’s going to be that way forever.” The soundscapes she deploys offer luminosity amid bleaker topics, like on the confessional “I Should Lose You”, a groove-driven, mellifluous banger, that sees comparisons to the likes of The 1975 feel natural. However, it feels like only a matter of time until artists the world over are citing Kern as their own musical inspirations.
