“He’s perfect, they’re perfect. They’d be perfect together. Born to be forever…” Jon M. Chu, director of the upcoming Wicked movie announced on Twitter. High praise warranted of course, for Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey who’s just been cast in the adaption of the legendary musical, and his castmates, illustrious leads Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.
The trio will helm the big-screen adaptation of Winnie Holzman’s Wizard of Oz spin-off which has been a mainstay on Broadway and London’s West End for upwards of 15 years. The plot explores the untold story of the witches from The Wizard of Oz, Galinda and Elphaba, played by Grande and Erivo, respectively, with Grande’s Glinda, the well-liked, aspirational witch and Erivo’s Elphaba, the monovalent young witch, who will grow up to be the notorious Wicked Witch of the West. Bailey joins as Fiyero, the centre of a love triangle between the two witches, who doesn’t live life particularly earnestly and tries to encourage others to do the same.
We’ve still got a slight wait until this trio of dreams hit screens together, however, the good news is we are in for a double hit, with the story set to unravel over two parts. The first is due to drop in Christmas 2024 and the second, a year later, leaving us more than enough time to learn those numbers off by heart so we can sing along annoyingly in the cinema.
