If you ever feel compelled to ride the sonic waves of a euphoric high, you needn’t travel further than the thirteen-track album dropped by the New York-via-Savannah trio Triathalon, titled Spin. A mesmerising album that captures all the mind-floating effects of lo-fi beats while keeping pulses rising with its ground-shaking production, Spin puts the trio’s perfected rhythm, artful flows and flawless instrumentals to work as it slowly carries you away from reality and into their carefully crafted soundscape.

Featuring previously released singles “Running”, “Dreams”, “Floating In Love” and “Time”, Spin also introduces new flavours in the form of a love ballad in “Dumb”, chilling monologues in “Good Morning” and paradoxical stylings in “Die”. A true reflection of the trio’s stratospheric growth, the album is the result of years of worth – both on sound and the self – and only marks the beginning of Triathalon’s reign over the realms of psychedelia.

To celebrate the release, we sat with the band to discuss the making of Spin, what their process looks like and what is next for them. To stream the album and for the full interview, head below now…

Hi guys, how are you all? Where are we speaking to you from right now?
Yoooo! We are good, hanging in there. We’re currently in Phoenix, AZ chilling at the venue about to eat for the first time today.

How did you all meet? Was it music that brought you together?
Chad and I (Adam) met back in high school on the swim team. But once we both found out we made music, we started hanging out and made a band. Later we ended up going to college together where we met Hunter at one of our first shows ever and have all been together ever since.

You are all based in New York! What inspires you about the city?
Probably the things that make it hard to live there. Like travelling, being around so many people and doing daily tasks that feel like they take forever. NY is beautiful and full of life but I’ve noticed things start coming to us when things get tough.

Congratulations on Spin! The album was recorded live, which is very unique. How does that change the listening experience for your fans?
Thank you! That’s a good question. Hopefully, it gives the listener the feeling that you’re in the same room with the album.

The album is a tale of personal growth. How do you think you as individuals, as well as you as a band, have grown since the “Sleep Cycle” EP (2020)?
I think all of us have become a lot more comfortable with the direction of our sound and the way we work together. Letting things develop naturally while also allowing everyone to add their own personal touch.

How did lockdown and the time for self-reflection it gave us inspire the album? Do you each have a favourite track from the album?
I think lockdown was an important time for us to really let the album marinate and give us more perspective what direction we wanted it to take. We had the album basically done before lockdown happened, but it wasn’t after the pandemic that we started to rearrange and add/take away songs. Hunter’s favourite track is Floating in Love, Chad’s favourite track is Relax and my favourite (Adam) track is “Spin”.

How would you describe the sound of this album and how does it compare to your previous work?
Running through a transparent tunnel underwater on acid. It’s deff a good combination of all our past records where we really dive into different eras of our discography while still trying to make it feel new.

The album was written and produced by all of you, how did you deal with differing opinions throughout that process?
A lot of patience.

How did the collaborations with Gabe Wax and Zeroh come about?
I (Adam) met Gabe a couple years back and we really hit it off. During the pandemic he reached out about helping us with the album so when it was finally at a good place we hit him up. We were introduced to Zeroh by Lex Records and are really happy we got to work with him.

What’s next for Triathalon? What can fans expect from your upcoming live shows?
Next is working on the new album! And fans can expect mosh pits, American idol singing challenges and doughnuts at these live shows.
